Guidelines to write a well structured Literature response.

Write your response using the same tense that is used in the question.

1. Relevance:  Stay focused and true to the question. Keep linking your response to the question.
You must link your point, evidence, explanation to the question.

2. Follow the format. Structure whichever question you are doing according to the format -> 8
paragraphs.
Para 1 -  leading statement and Thesis statement. (AO1)
Paras 2, 3, 4 should have your 4 to 5 solid points with analysis and evidence. (AO2 and AO3)
Para 7 - writer's craft - (AO4)
Para 8 - conclusion - (AO5)

*AO: Assessment Objectives as provided by English Lit Cambridge Syllabus 2010.

3. Write in clear and legible handwriting.

4. Use formal expressions with clarity. Make simple but meaningful/impactful sentences. Avoid
convoluted or unnecessarily long and complex sentences. Punctuation is essential as it can change
the meaning. Make sure your apostrophes and plurals are not mixed up.

5. Keep the facts from the texts right. Do not mix them up or make up facts. Know your text!

6. Provide evidence (direct quotes/references/examples for poetry and examples and references for
prose).

7. DO NOT NARRATE. DO NOT REPEAT OR SUMMARISE/PARAPHRASE. You must ONLY

analyse!!

8. Elaborate your points. Don't forget to answer the following questions in whichever question you
choose to do:
HOW? - what devices, methods, techniques, tools are employed/utilised/used to...
WHAT? ...explore the text/characters/themes etc, to...
WHY? ...find its purpose,  effects, reasons etc, basically dont forget a focused analysis.
All three are connected. Every question has these 3 questions in it.

9. Choose your points smartly. Don't mention weak points first.

10. You must MANAGE TIME in a way that you get the time to REVIEW.
