Chapter 12: Chemical Coordination in Plants

1.(a) Match the terms with the correct examples.

Term Example
roots growing downwards with
positive phototropism
gravity

shoots growing upwards

negative geotropism
against gravity

positive geotropism roots growing away from light

negative phototropism shoots growing towards light

(b) The diagram shows a growing shoot.

(i) Label the direction of the light.

(ii) Label the area where the cells will be elongating.

2. A student carried out an investigation into the effect of light on the direction of growth of wheat
seedlings. Thirty seedlings were grown on damp cotton wool.

Ten seedlings were left to grow normally (group A)

Ten seedlings had the tips removed (group B)

Ten seedlings had foil caps placed over the tips (group C)

The mean lengths of each of the groups of 10 seedlings were calculated.

A lamp was placed to one side of the seedlings and used to illuminate them for 24 hours.

The direction of growth of the seedlings was recorded and the mean lengths of each group
calculated again.

The results are shown in the table.

Seedling Mean height at Mean height after Change in mean Percentage Number growing
group start / mm 24 hours / mm height / mm change in towards light
height / %
A 12.2 12.8 8
B 10.3 10.9 1
C 11.8 13.2 2

(a)(i) Calculate the change in mean height for each group of seedlings and write your answer in the
table.

(ii) Calculate the percentage change in mean height using the formula. Write your answers in the
table.

change∈mean height
perentage change= × 100

3. The effect of different concentrations of auxin on the angle of growth of a wheat seedling was
investigated.

Petroleum jelly containing auxin was placed on the side of the shoot with a matchstick. The seedling
was placed in the dark for 24 hours and the angle that the shoot bent was then measured. This was
repeated with increasing concentrations of auxin.

A graph of the results is shown below.

(a)(i) Describe the effect of increasing auxin concentration on the angle of growth of the coleoptile.
