Q1. For each scatter plot, describe the form, direction and strength of the association between the
variables.
The berry market is expanding. The consumption of strawberries will increase by about 2% over
the next five years. Growth of at least 7% per year is expected for blueberries, raspberries and
blackberries. The consumption of blueberries in particular will increase a lot, partly because of
the healthy image consumers have of them, which, according to Rabobank, implies many
opportunities for entrepreneurs in the berry chain. Increasingly, berries are being cultivated in
hothouses to meet the growing demands.
Experiments were run in a hothouse to determine the effect of temperature on berry production.
Sections of the hothouse were kept at different temperatures and the mass of berries produced
was then measured (the yield). The gathered data is shown in the scatter plot, along with the line
of best fit.
1
a. Use the line of best fit to estimate the yield of plants kept at 19oC.
The yield of plants kept at 19OC would be around 9.5kg
b. At what temperature would you expect a yield of 16 kg?
The temperature I would expect a yield of 16kg to be is 29oC
c. Extrapolate to determine the approximate temperature at which the bushes would
produce no berries.
The bushes will produce no berries at 6oC
Comment on how might the lowest data point affect your answer.
d. Justify if it would be sensible to extrapolate to determinate the yield for a temperature of
50oC.
Q3. The data below gives the petrol consumption figures of cars, with the same size engine,
when driven at different speeds.
2
b. Estimate the petrol consumption of a car travelling at 45 m.p.h.
35 m.p.g when car travelling at 45 m.p.h
c. Estimate the speed of a car whose petrol consumption is 27 m.p.g.
63 m.p.h
Q4. You have been working on a science project for 8 months. Each month, you measured the
length of a baby alligator.
a. Use technology to represent the above data on a scatter diagram with month on the x-
axis and length on the y-axis.

a. Research on the internet and collect data about the average AQI and population density of
six cities in India with population density ranging from low to medium to high.
b. Draw a scatter plot to compare the AQI and the population density of these cities ranging
in size.
c. Was this result what you would have predicted? Describe the correlation in terms of
form, direction and strength.
d. Tokyo, Japan, has an average AQI of 3µg/m³. What population density would you expect
Tokyo to have? Research the actual population density of Tokyo. Is your prediction close
to this? Discuss why there is a discrepancy.
