INTRODUCTION

SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT MILMA DAIRY PLANT, PATHANAMTHITTA

1. INTRODUCTION

Internship is the systematic study and careful application of knowledge about how people
as individuals and as groups act within organizations. An organizational study encompasses the
study of organizations from multiple viewpoints, methods, and levels of analysis. For that my
internship has been carried out in MILMA PATHANAMTHITTA DAIRY.

Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF) popularly called MILMA was
established in April 1980 with its head office at Thiruvananthapuram for the successful
implementation of the Operation Flood. KCMMF is the top management controlling all the milk
dairies namely TRCMPU (Thiruvananthapuram Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union),
ERCMPU (Ernakulam Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union) and MRCMPU (Malabar
Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union). The mission of Milma is ‘Farmer’s Prosperity
through consumer satisfaction’. The objective of Milma is to build up a viable dairy industry in
the State and to provide constant market and stable price to the dairy farmers for their produce.

The company was established on 22nd April 2010. Earlier there was a Milma diary plant in
Kumbazha in Pathanamthitta, which had been started in 2001, but by 2010 it was shifted to
Thatta in Pathanamthitta and started its operations. The new milma diary has a processing
capacity of 60,000 liters per day.

1.1OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The internship provides an excellent opportunity for experiencing and understanding an

organization in its full range. It enables the student to find out the correlation between the theory
and the real business situation.

∑ To study the organizational structure of MILMA Dairy.

∑ To get fairly acquainted with professional work culture.
∑ To understand the industrial practice.
∑ To find out various managerial process handled by MILMA.

8
MOUNT ZION INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT MILMA DAIRY PLANT, PATHANAMTHITTA

∑ To study the various function of each department.

∑ To identify the strength and weakness of the workers an organization.
∑ To study how the theoretical knowledge is made use in real situation.

1.2 INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

Milk is an unavoidable element in the life of Kerala’s. In older days, Kerala was far ahead
in production of milk. But due to several reasons production of milk declined. Milk is an ancient
as mankind itself, as it is the substances created to feed the mammalian infant. All species, all
mammals, from man to whales, produce milk for this purpose. Many centuries ago perhaps as early
as 6000-8000 BC, ancient man learned to domesticate species of animals for the provision of milk
to be consumed by them. These included cows, buffaloes, sheet, goats and camels, all of which
are still used in vary parts of the world of the production of milk for milk for human consumption.
A dairy is a facility for the extraction and processing of milk-mostly from goats, camel or
cows, but also from buffalo, sheep, hoarse or camels for human consumption. Typically it is a farm
(dairy farm) or section of a farm that is concerned with the production of milk, butter and cheese.
Terminology differs slightly between countries. In particular, in US a dairy can also be a facility
that processes, distributes and sell dairy products, or a room, building or establishment where milk
is kept and butter or cheese is made.
In New Zealand a dairy means a corner convenience store, and diary factory is the term for
elsewhere called a dairy.
As an attributive, the word dairy refers to milk based products, derivative and process and
animals and workers involved in their production. For example dairy cattle, dairy goat. A dairy
farm produces milk and dairy factory process in to a variety of dairy products. These
establishments continued the dairy industry, a component of the flood industry.

World cow's milk production in 2021 stood at 620 million tonnes, with the top ten
producing countries accounting for 56.6% of production. The USA is the largest cow's milk
producer in the world accounting for 14.6% of world production, producing nearly 91 million
tonnes in 2021, an increase of 2.1% when compared to 2020.

9
MOUNT ZION INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT MILMA DAIRY PLANT, PATHANAMTHITTA

India is the second largest cow's milk producer, accounting for 8.7% of world production
and producing 54 million tonnes in 2021. The UK is the 10th largest producer in the world
producing nearly 14 million tonnes in 2021 and accounting for 2.2% of world cow's milk
production.

1.2.1 DAIRY INDUSTRY IN INDIA

∑ Beginning in organized milk handling was made India with the establishment of Military
Dairy Farm.
∑ Handling of mike Co-operative Milk Unions establishments all over the country on a small
scale in the early stages.
∑ Long distance refrigerated Co-operative milk Unions established in the country as like a
small scale in the early stages.
∑ Pasteurized and battling of milk on large scale organized distribution was started at Aarey
(1958), Calcutta (1959), Delhi (1959), Worli (1961), Madras (1963)etc.
∑ Establishments of milk plants under the five year plants for dairy development in India.
The main aim was to produce more, better and cheaper milk.

AT PRESENT

Dairy industry is crucial importance to India. The country is the world largest milk
producers, according to more than 13% of worlds total milk production. Dairy products are cheaper
and nutritious food to millions of people in India and only accepted source of animal protein for
large vegetarian segment of Indian population, particularly among the landless, women and men.
Dairies reconsidered as one of the activity alleviated the poverty and the unemployment especially
in rural areas. In the rain fed and drought prawn regions. In India 3/4th of the population lives in
rural areas and 38% they are poor. According to the National Survey of 1993-94, livestock sector
produces regular employment to about 9.8 million person in principle status and 8.6 million in
subsidiary status, which constitute about 5% of total work force. The progress in this sector results
in a more balanced development of the rural economy.

1.2.2 OPERATION FLOOD

Operation flood has helped in dairy farmers, direct their own development, placing control
of the resource they create in their own hands. A ‘National Milk Grid’, links milk producers
throughout in India with consumers over 700 towns and cities., reducing seasonal and regional
price variations ensuring that the product get a major share of the price consumer pay Operation
flood’s objectives includes:

∑ Increase milk production

∑ Augment rural income
∑ Fair price for consumers

1.2.3 DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION

The huge volume of milk produced in India population itself, in a 50-50 division between
urban and non-urban areas. Increasingly, important consumers of the dairy industry are fast-food
and non-food industry using dairy ingredients in a wide range of products.

In spite of having larger milk production, India is very minor player in world market. India
was primarily a dependent country till early seventies. Most of the demand supply gaps of liquid
milk requirements for urban consumers were met by important anhydrous milk fat/butter and dry
milk powders. Operation flood programmed, the scenery demonically changed and the commercial
important of dairy products came to a half except occasional imports of very small quantities. In
1990s, India started exploring surplus dairy commodities such as SMP, WMP, butter and ghee.
The agriculture and processed food product export Development Authority (APEDA) regulated
the export and import of dairy products till early 1990s. However, in the new EXIM policy
announced in April 2000, the union Government has allotted free import and export of most dairy
products. The major destination of Indian Dairy products are Bangladesh(24.5%), UAE(16.1%).
in terms of products , SMP is the most important product accounting for about 63% of total export
volume, followed by ghee and butter(11.7%) and WMP. Export figures clearly demonstrate that
the INDIAN dairy is still in infancy. There for export demand for these products will increase and
hence, there is great potential for export.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT MILMA DAIRY PLANT, PATHANAMTHITTA

5.1 CONCLUSION

The organisational study at milma was done with an objective to understanding how an
organization functions, what are its major departments and functioning of these departments. The
study at milma provided the opportunity to learn the organizational goals and objectives, various
departments that conducted critical functions and the inter-relation between them.

Milma, “The goodness Kerala wakes up to” has good image in the minds of people.
Milma is the first and inimitable organization which created a revolution in procurement,
processing, marketing and distribution of pure milk in the state.MILMA Pathanamthitta dairy
started its operation from 2001. It makes a major role in channeling milk from rural areas to urban
areas to maximize the return to produce and to provide quality milk and milk products to its
customers.

The motto of Milma, “Your health is our concern”, has become synonymous for assured
quality. Milma has now become house name in Kerala. But now Milma faces stiff competition
from various organizations. If Milma can take step to maintain quality of products, then they can
help up their monopoly in the market. The company has proved to be a leading brand in the market
in every aspect. The only area where the company is to be improved its promotional activities. It
will be helpful in the future project, the study helpful a lot to gap between theory and practice.

5.2 RECOMMENDATION
∑ The company should give more emphasis on advertisement and try to market the product
in the state as well.
∑ Implimenting more training programmes can increase the performance of the employees.
∑ Proper feedback system need to be employed.
∑ The management must discuss the problem with representatives of workers.
∑ The management should recognize the employees according to their performance.
Financial and non-financial award should be given achievement of their work.
∑ There should be no differentiation shown for the work schedulable among the permanent
and temporary workers.
