What in the world is the

Industrial Design degree

course in NUS?

2022.1 Edition
Most people are never taught how
to innovate and create solutions
centred around human beings –
despite how every discipline
exists to serve people.

Industrial Design – sometimes a puzzling name

– has been that very discipline that teaches
you exactly how to invent the next best idea
for humanity.

It is a highly-specialised course that brings

the most creative aspects of technology,

non-conformist engineering, artistry, and
business entrepreneurship together.

It aligns these with a deep understanding of

how human beings perceive, adopt, and use
innovative solutions - and how the tangible
and immaterial resources of this world can be
put together to make these solutions happen.

Its purpose is to create new products,

services, spaces, apps, user experiences, and
businesses that people love.
Individuals that do well in this highly-
challenging course are multi-curious, dabble
in both the arts and tech, and have a penchant
for questioning the status quo. They are
people who dream of breaking new ground and
starting up. They are artists, scientists,
makers, communicators, entrepreneurs,
inventors, researchers, technologists, and
engineers all mixed within one person. Such a
person is fascinated with human behaviour and
guided by doing the maximum good for humanity
using the least amount of resources.

you a unique kind of designer
In the 21st century, a lot of non-creative
work will be displaced by automation and
artificial intelligence. Every profession
needs to evolve to lead these machines and not
compete against them.

Industrial Designers will be prized for their

ability to think outside the box and their
unique, trans-disciplinary ability to bridge
and lead innovation between different fields;
These are the skills and areas particularly
difficult for machines to replicate.

As DID graduates, you will stand out to the
best employers who build innovative teams.

“NUS DID graduates are insanely talented and capable

designers, creatives and communicators. I can't think of any
design team at DBS without these young design thinkers.”

Naveen Sethia

Senior Vice President User Experience & Design, DBS Bank

"We've hired multiple NUS DID graduates at Agency SG; the

level of design intuition, thoughtfulness, candour and
rigour the course embodies into its students is unmatched.
Their exposure to Design Research, Industrial Design,
Interaction Design, Communications and many other multi-
disciplinary subjects is what makes them invaluable hires.
The faculty themselves make me want to go back to University
and study again!"

Alistair Norris

Interaction Design Lead of AGENCY SG

"The thing that strikes me most of our hires from NUS DID is
that they seem to have inherited a culture that is willing
to dive deep into a project both academically as well as
practically, so as to ensure design propositions are not
only practical but also understanding of the envelop it
should be pushing."

Yong Jie Yu

Co-Founder of STUCK Design
