The key takeaways are that distance refers to the total path travelled, while displacement refers to the net or shortest distance between the initial and final positions of an object. Displacement is a vector quantity that has both magnitude and direction, while distance is a scalar quantity that only has magnitude.

Distance refers to the total path travelled, while displacement refers to the net or shortest distance between the initial and final positions of an object. Displacement takes into account direction, while distance does not. Displacement is a vector quantity, while distance is a scalar quantity.

From a sketch map, you can calculate the distance by adding up the lengths of all the paths travelled. The displacement is calculated by taking the difference between the initial and final positions, taking into account the direction.

Good Morning, Class! Good morning Maam!

Attendance Check Present Maam!

Can you recall our lesson yesterday? It is about Motion Ma’am.

What is motion? Motion is defined as the continuous
change in position.
An object is said to be moving if its
position changes with time with
respect to an arbitrary reference
ELICIT point.

Can you cite examples of moving

objects or objects in motion? 1. A girl riding a bike
2. A boy swimming at the
beach.
3. A racing car.
How can you prove the object is 4. A running Cheetah
moving?
When it changes position with
respect to the reference point.
Teacher’s Response Student’s Response

Distance, displacement, speed,

ENGAGE velocity and acceleration are all
related to motion.

Now, you already know that the

change in position or location over a
period of time is called motion.

1. How can we tell that an 1. Distance and displacement,

object has changed its speed, velocity and
position? acceleration describe
motion.
2. How can we describe the
change in position?

Look at this picture and try to

areas (Math)

Distance

Displacement

Distance = 4m + 3m = 7m
Displacement = 5m

Base on the illustration:

1. What is distance? 1. Distance is the total path
travelled from point A to B
to C.
2. What is displacement? 2. Displacement is the
distance travelled from
point A to C only.

EXPLORE Teacher’s Response Student’s Response

Individual Activity: Explain distance

and displacement through a sketch
map

Objective: Explain the distance and

displacement through a sketch map.
Materials: Construction paper,
marker and ruler
Instruction:
1. Get a construction paper and
fold it into four equal parts.
2. Using a marker put a mark at
the center of your
construction paper.
3. Indicate the direction
Up : NORTH
Down: SOUTH
Right: EAST
Left: WEST

4. Using your ruler draw a line

measuring 13cm, North and
label it as point A, and then
another line 8cm, EAST label
it as point B and then
connect another 5cm going
SOUTH label it point C and
lastly draw a broken line
from point C to point A.
Note: make sure the arrow
head is pointing on the right
direction.

Sample:

NORTH

8cmB
WEST A EAST
13cm C 5cm

SOUTH
Answer these questions base on
your sketch map: 1. Distance =
1. What is the total distance 13cm+8cm+5cm=21cm
from point A to C?
2. What the displacement? Do
not forget to write the
direction of your answer.
Example: 15cm West, 20cm,
North, etc. 2. Displacement=16cm
Support your answer. S(South)
Since North and South
directions are two opposite
directions 5cm, East is
subtracted from the total
distance covered, therefore:
3. How would you explain the
Difference between distance Displacement= 13cm-
from displacement? 5cm+8cm=16cm Southeast

Or

Displacement=13cm+8cm-
5cm=16cmSouth

3. Distance is the length of the

entire path that an object
travelled while displacement
is the shortest distance
between the object’s initial
and final position.

What is the difference
between the two?
