Chapter I

Introduction

This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem,

theoretical framework, conceptual framework, significance of the study, and the

definition of terms.

Background of the Study

Observing the student misbehavior, we noticed that some of them are having

worst behaviors especially the grade 10 students. Their behavior affects the

personality and other people’s perception. This research was conducted in order to

perfectly open the minds of the readers about the very common issues in school

which is the teacher’s perception on the students’ misbehavior and its effect on

the academic performance of the grade 10 students of Marasbaras National High

School.

Many misbehavior issues are being adopted by the students such as using cell

phones during class discussions, tardiness, leaving early, leaving class frequently,

shyness non participation, sleeping, arguing with other students, disrespectful to

teachers, using profanity, more importantly excessive absences. Having this

research can teach us how to minimize the reports about the students’ misbehavior

issue. A hundred of problems out there, but these researchers wanted to conduct

this type of study because in this generation many misbehavior issues are being

scattered in many schools more frequently here on Marasbaras National High

School.
Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to lessen the rates of the student’s misbehavior, to

enable them to realize that our behavior matters to our way of success. This study

will answer the following questions:

1.) What are the effects of student’s misbehavior on the academic performance of

the students?

2.) What are the common misbehavior students do?

3.) How can we lessen the student’s misbehaviors?

Significance of the study:

This study will have advantages and will benefits the following:

To the Students. This study will help improve their positive behavior in life.

It is important to the students because it will reflect their personality as a person

that doing it as a their everyday living, it will bring that kind of misbehavior until

they get old. And help them recognize and fix any harm caused by their mistakes.

To the Teachers. This study will help the teachers to students in improving their

skills as a well-educated person on handling the student’s misbehavior in

school.

It’s also important for the teachers to show their belief that students can and will
learn to choose positive behaviors and their response to their mistakes will help

them do so.

To the Parents. This study will provide them information to guide their children

to do their best to finish their studies in order to have a greater opportunity of

finding a good job with good personality in the future.

To the Future Researchers. This research will give the future researchers ideas

and information, hence will provide the guide and reference about students

misbehavior that affects the academic performance of the grade 10 students.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of our study is for finding the effects of misbehaviors of the

Grade 10 Students to the academic performance of the students.

This study is delimited to the Grade 10 Students in Marasbaras National

High School. The main purpose of our research is to point out the effects of

misbehaviors of the Grade 10 Students in terms of their accomplishment on their

school works. This also focuses on misbehaviors of the Grade 10 Students and it’s

relation to the academic performance of the selected students.

The study will be conducted inside the MNHS Marasbaras, Tacloban City,

Leyte. We will only get 12 respondents who are MNHS teachers in Grade 10.

This study will be done in January-February, 2020.

Theoretical Framework:

When you hear the name Spencer Kagan, you probably think instantly

about cooperative learning and some of the famous Kagan Structures: Think-Pair-

Share, Pairs Compare, Rally Robin, Numbered Heads Together, etc. These

structures are the results of years of research conducted by Dr. Kagan, observing

and manipulating the “interaction patterns” of children in different situations.

In fact, Kagan has been studying cooperation since 1967 and claims that-

to a great extent- human behavior is influenced directly by situation. Therefore,

teachers have the power to manipulate classroom “situations” in order to prevent

misbehavior. Kagan’s cooperative learning structures work to control the way

students interact with others. Kagan claims that the4 way a traditional classroom

is structured pits students against each other: specifically, when one student

answers a question incorrectly, other students are secretly happy because that

means they have a chance for recognition. Kagan’s cooperative structures engage

students, foster positive interdependence in the classroom and help prevent

descriptive behavior.

Spencer Kagan categorized misbehavior into 4 sections the ABCD of

disruptive behavior. Which is the Aggression, Breaking rules, Confrontation and

Disengagement.

To deal with disruptive behavior, Kagan co-authored a management

strategy called Win-Win Discipline with Patricia Kyle and Sally Scott. The

theoretical concept behind Win-Win Discipline is that student misbehavior is the

result of their unmet needs. Win-Win Discipline is specifically designed to help

meet student’s needs or help them deal unmet needs-thereby decreasing student

misbehavior-so that we all “win” the overarching goals of Win-Win Discipline for

students to develop “long life responsible behavior”. In order to do this (and in

order for discipline to be most effective), teachers and students most work

collaboratively to establish what is and is not acceptable behavior in the

classroom and continue working together to achieve it.

Conceptual Framework:

Performance

Rare Lack of self-

opportunities confidence

This diagram shows the effects of students’ misbehavior in the life of a

student not only at the present time but also in the future. It shows that students’

misbehavior definitely affect the academic performance of a student. And also it

shows that, low academic performance can affect the student’s confidence and

opportunities in the near future.
