Introduction

Welcome to the Social Hacker's Computer

Literacy Course
In this document you will find a guide to getting a person with little or no computing
knowledge surrounding common tasks that a person will often face.

This is an applied computer literacy course meaning that it favors student interaction over
lectures, activities over articles and a collaboration first learning approach.

In the past, one the biggest issue that we have found with Computer Literacy courses is that
the students do not understand the real world application of the skills that they are learning
and so do not understand the reason why they are learning the material that they are.

In this curriculum we will cover the following topics:

Computer words and terminology

Interacting with a computer
Double clicking
Moving windows around
Using hotkeys
Copy, paste, cut etc
Using the internet
Using email
Searching effectively
Basic computer management
Creating files
Moving files
Deleting files

In terms of software skills this curriculum will be arranging in such a way that students will be
tasked with completing a certain activity and then will be taught the tools they need to
complete that task.

An example of the tasks that students will be given are:

Arrange an event
Using Word, Google Calendar and Email
Make a guide to your city
Using Excel and Google Maps

2
Introduction

This course will be written using Google Docs in mind but any office software solution can be
used.

Computer Word Dictionary

Throughout this guide we want to have the students build up a dictionary of words that they
can refer to at a later date. We will highlight words that should be added to a students
dictionary by setting them as bold and italic like this. It is important that you remind the
students to add the words to their dictionaries.

Course Goals
By the end of this course, our students should be more confident in using a computer and
posses the knowledge to continue learning on their own.

The most lesson that we want to instill on our students is that using a computer is not scary
and to experiment with a computer, to be inquisitive and to leverage technology to help them
in their lives.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Computers

Lesson 1
Lesson Outline
In this lesson we cover the following areas:

Computer terminology

This includes the different parts of a computer, language around interacting with a
computer and information on screen.
Getting on to the internet

Using a browser, searching on Youtube and logging in to email

Email

Sending and recieving emails

Basic Keyboard Commands

Copy, cut and paste

Introductions
Introduce yourself to the class and have them introduce themselves. Ask them to outline
how much experience they have with computers which will help you to work out the speed
that you will be able to teach at.

Computer Terminology Dictionary

At the start of the lesson you should give the students pens and paper each to write down
the computer terminology that they learn throughout this lesson. You should encourage them
to write down new words as they learn them in this format

Keyboard
Mouse
Power Button

Ctrl Button
Shift Button

Alt Button
Space Bar

Turning on the Computer

Have each student turn on the computer and log in to windows.

When each student has reached the Desktop you should talk though the basic parts of the
screen such as the Task Bar, Start Button and desktop Shortcuts. When the students
have become accustomed to moving the mouse around the scree you should have them

5
Lesson 1 - Introduction to Computers

open a web browser (Google Chrome) and click in the URL bar to type in the URL
'www.youtube.com'.

Once each student has made it to Youtube, ask them to search for a video that they would
like to share with the class. We always like it when students share something about
themselves in the videos that they choose.

Depending on the skill level of the students you may have to explain how to scroll on the
screen and how to click or double click.

It will be important to show them how to navigate using the Back Button so that they can
choose a video they like.

Give the students some time to experience navigating around a website and finding a video
that they like. When they have all found a video that they like you should move on to the
next step.

Using Email
Next, you should minimize the Youtube screen taking time to explain the difference between
minimize and close. They should understand that minimizing a windows means you can go
back to it later.

If the user has email, they should log in to it. If they do not have a email address having
them set one up is a good step to take.

When they have all logged in to their email accounts, they should make a new email. In this
email they should copy and paste the URL of the video that they code in to the email. When
they have done this they should hit send.

Watch Youtube Videos

One by one, show short clips of This is an ice breaker activity and a nice way to have the
students more properly introduce themselves.

Conclusion
To complete the lesson you should cover all of the new words that the students have
learnt during the lesson.
You should make sure that each students remembers their email password for the next

will use on Sheets:

Cell: A single data element

Column: A vertical set of cells.

Row: A horizontal set of cells.

Range: A selection of cells of rows, columns, or both.

Function : A operation used to calculate cell, row, column, or range values, manipulate
data, and more.

Formula: The combination of functions.

Spreadsheet: The document you're editing

Enter and Edit your data

Ask students to do the following tasks:

1. Change the name of your SpreadSheet.

2. Ask them to go to this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Depp

33
Lesson 7 - Using Google Sheets

Then select the whole table and copy it (ctrl + c) and past it on the Sheet, the result will be
this:

There are several ways to organize this "dataset", one of them would be for example,
inserting a chart. For this select the whole table and then go to "insert" and then to chart. A
big white block will appear. As a result you will get something like this:

With the chart editor you can customize your chart, with colors, chart Style, add legends,
Series, Vertical Axis, Gridlines and may more.

34
Lesson 7 - Using Google Sheets

Homework
Ask students to import an Image, a link and a comment. For the previous lessons, the
students already know how to share documents, so ask them to do the same exercise.

Add built-in formulas

There are many ways for which google sheets can help you with, more specially with a big
number of statistical and data manipulation tasks. You'll find 5 main formulas on the figure
below:

Here there's a description of this formulas:

SUM: adds up a range cells

AVERAGE: finds the average of a range of cells

COUNT: counts the values in a range of cells

MAX: finds the highest value in a range of cells

MIN: finds the lowest value in a range of cells
Basic Arithmetic: You can also perform functions like addition, subtraction, and
multiplication directly in a cell without calling a formula

Make an exercise with the students, write a table with random numbers or use a the
dataset you like on internet and perform examples using these formulas.

Share your file

You can always work simultaneously with with your students in order for them to have a
reference of what you've done today.

In this lesson the aim is to understand what is the IP protocol and basic internet topologies.
We will cover the following areas:

What do you need to have internet connection?

What is the IP protocol

What is the utility of your IP address

How to determine the IP address from your computer.

What do you need for an Internet connection ?

Ask students to set groups of Three and to label the number 1, 2, 3 for each person. One will
be the computer, the second will be the moden, the third will be the ISP (the network
provider) and the teacher will be the Internet:

Explain that students 1 will be the user, which could be a teacher, a student, anyone
basically.

Lesson 10 - IP protocol

Explain that Students 2 will be the modem, which is a device which converts the
information coming from the provider and transform it to the right signal toward the final
users (Students 1) through coaxial cable, Optical Fiber, STP cable. Also the modem is
in charge of distributing the information according to the data's traffic.
Explain that Students 3 are the ISP, the internet provider which is a enterprise who
interconnects the internet with many modems and provides services to more systems,
including houses, offices and more.
Finally the teacher will be the Internet itself, which contains all information and data. In
this analogy only you'll have a library at your disposal, anyone else but you can take
books from it. So the Student 1 will make a request for a specific topic (Mathematics,
science, politics), he will write it on a paper and pass it to Student 2, who will give it to
Student 3 and Only student 3 will give the request to you. You look for the book and
send it back in the inverse order.

All of this process happens very fast and the transference happens with analogical and
digital signal, since the exchanged data isn't physical the information is spreads at speeds
close to the speed of light (300,000 km/s).

What is the IP address?

Explain IP meaning:

Each computer or device has a unique IP address, which is an identifier used in internet to
label each computer (Cellphone, laptop, tablet etc). Check out more information about it and
explain it in basic terms.

Lesson 10 - IP protocol

Basic topology:

Ip Addresses are used to label websites, so the servers and users can be recognized
over the internet. Explain the image above to the students. Use analogies and examples
to make clear the idea of how IP address works.

What is the IP address from my device?

Teach them several ways to access to the IP address:

1. Write IP over the google search engine.

1. Use a public web page specialized for it:

2. https://www.iplocation.net

3. https://www.whatismyip.com

4. https://bearsmyip.com

3. cmd of windows

5. Type on the search bar of you computer "Command prompt", a black window will
appear as shown below:

6. Make sure everyone has done it, afterwards write "ipconfig" and explain where they can
find the IP address. further information shown on this window will be explained on future
courses.

Lesson 10 - IP protocol

What is a URL
URL: Uniform Resource Locator. This is basically an address with an specific structure that
internet uses to identify websites.

URLs address to web pages, this places are created with specific programming languages
which the student will have the opportunity to see on a different course. Explain briefly what
the next three programming languages do:
