INTRODUCTION:
A canopy is an overhead roof or else a structure over which a fabric or metal
covering is attached, able to provide shade or shelter from weather conditions such as
sun, hail, snow and rain. Architectural canopies include projections giving protection
from the weather, or merely decoration.
EVOLUTION:
In classical architecture, canopy was a projecting hood or cover that was
suspended over an altar, statue or niche, and was commonly found in churches
throughout the middle Ages. During Renaissance, Canopy evolved to become a
baldachin, a fixed structure supported on pillars that was common in baroque
architecture. Today, canopies may be independent of other structures, or may projects
out from a structure such as a building, typically providing shelter at an entrance. It
may be supported by the building it is attached to, and / or ground mountings cables,
stanchions or upright support posts.
ADVANTAGES OF CANOPY:
• Helps to create a boundary and provides perfect area for activities allowing for
fun.
• Easy access to the outside can encourage outdoor play and exercise.
• Provide much needed shade for people on sunnier days, to enjoy outside.
• Gives more usable space which is cost-effective, an extension to building.
• Provides excellent shelter from the rain, outside even during rainy break times.
• Canopies can reduce the use of air conditioning, helping to save energy and
reduce your carbon footprint, which in turn will create a more comfortable
environment.
• Make an excellent waiting area for parents, giving them somewhere dry to wait in
bad weather.
• Provide a covered walkway between and become an attractive feature of a
playground or park.

TYPES OF CANOPY:
From shade canopies to garden canopies, portable garages, and carports,
there are different types and sizes of canopies available to choose from, depending
on what you need. Each type of canopy can be used for myriad purposes and serves
to offer shelter and security for both people and important equipment that need
protection from the harsh sun rays.

LIMITATIONS OF CANOPIES
•STYLE - While some canopies offer a stylish elegance, most are simple frames with
light coverings.

•WEATHER-RESISTANCE - Most canopies are not sturdy enough to withstand


strong weather conditions, so you'll need to take them down or stabilize them before a
big storm.

SHADE CANOPY:
• Shade canopies provide the ultimate protection against the scorching UV rays,
wind, rain and create a tranquil shaded area in any outdoor setting.
• Shade canopies are highly functional, convenient, and accessible

dinner party.
• They have an elegant design with screened sides to keep away the pestilence of

CARPORT:
• Protecting your vehicles from the sunlight and adverse weather conditions,
installing a a carport canopy is a worthwhile choice.

CANOPY TENTS:

TERMINOLOGY SIMILAR TO CANOPY AND ITS
DIFFERENCE:
GAZEBO:- The main difference between
gazebos and canopies is how the
latter are meant to be temporary outdoor
structures that are supposed to be simple
to set up and convenient whenever there's
a need, whereas gazebos are permanent
backyard furnishings.

MARQUEES:- A Marquee is “a large tent set up for an outdoor party, reception, or


exhibition” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. A pop-up or folding
Marquee tent is a one-piece, large-span portable shelter whose metal structure has
the classic “scissor frame” design. It is an easily set up and torn down sturdy shelter
that is either used to promote a brand or protect its occupants from the outdoors.
AWNING:- An awning is a secondary covering attached to the exterior wall of a
building, typically composed of canvas woven of acrylic, cotton ,etc that is stretched
tightly over a light structure of aluminum, iron or steel, etc.

PAVILLION:- It’s a projecting element of a façade, used especially at the center or at


each end and usually treated so as to suggest a tower. A tent, especially a large and
elaborate one
GLASS ROOF:-A glass canopy provides an attractive and practical feature to a
building. Usually placed outside entrance doors a canopy protects people entering
the building

PORTICO:-A portico is a porch leading to the entrance of a building, or extended as


a colonnade, with a roof structure over a walkway, supported by columns or
enclosed by walls.

CHUPPAH:- A Chuppah is a canopy under which a Jewish couple stands during their
wedding ceremony. It consists of a cloth or sheet, stretched or supported over four
poles

PATIO:- A Patio is an outdoor space generally used for dining or recreation that
adjoins a residence and is commonly paved with concrete, bricks, blocks, paving,
etc.

VERANDAH:- This term has two forms, ‘verandah’ also being correct, although the
version without an ‘h’ is usually preferred. A veranda is a roofed platform along the
outside of a house. It’s level with the ground floor and often extends across both the
front and the sides of the structure. It can be partly enclosed by a railing.

DOOR CANOPY:- Porches most commonly sit above the front or side doors, known
as a door canopy, offer protection from the weather, providing shade from. It also
protects the door and its immediate surroundings.

PERGOLA:-A pergola is an outdoor garden feature forming a shaded walkway,


passageway, or sitting area of vertical posts or pillars that usually support Cross-
beams.

PORCH:- difference between canopy and porch


is that canopy is a high cover providing shelter, such as a cloth supported above an
object, particularly over a bed while porch is (architecture) a covered and enclosed
entrance to a building, whether taken from the interior, and forming a sort of
vestibule within the main wall, or projecting without and with a separate roof.

BALCONY:-A balcony is a platform on the outside of a building, enclosed by walls


or balustrades, supported by columns or console brackets. The platform is
projecting from the wall of a building, usually above the ground floor. Balconies are
typically small and are not used as social spaces or for entertainment purposes.
