Constants vs. Variables

Constant – the classic definition is a value that does not change.

If a signal is not written to in the application software, it is a constant.
Variable – the classic definition, a value that does change.
If a signal is written to in the application software, it is a variable.

Overview

When we have a trip event, we can determine the cause with a high degree
of certainty by examining the Trip Log.
The Trip Log is a collection of signals, alarms and events that provides a
chronological and comprehensive view of the status of the machine leading
up to and just after a Trip.
Trip is defined as a shutdown that occurs when the L4T logic transitions
from False to True

3

Overview

The Mark VIe Control Platform Upgrade contains a mix of Mark VIe
controllers, I/O modules comprised of I/O packs and terminal boards,
Ethernet I/O network, and power distribution components along with legacy
Mark VI I/O modules comprised of VME cards, in a VME rack with power
supply, and terminal boards.
Over time, the VME I/O cards can be replaced with Mark VIe I/O packs often
reusing the existing terminal boards until the VME racks themselves may be
removed.

Replacing Parts while Machine is in Operation

TB Online Replacement – Online replacement of terminal boards depends on

the redundancy level of the control. In general, most terminal boards are
NOT replaceable online; however, some terminal boards in Simplex modules
may be replaced online.
VME Board Online Replacement – Online replacement of VME I/O boards
depends on the redundancy level of the control. Replacing a VME board
requires the shutdown of the entire rack, so caution must be taken. In
general, most VME I/O boards are replaceable online.
I/O Pack Online Replacement - Online replacement of I/O packs depends on
the redundancy level of the control. In general, most I/O packs are
replaceable online.

Process and Diagnostic Alarm Review

To determine whether a part may be

replaced while the process or
machine is in operation, a thorough
review of all existing process and
diagnostic Alarms must be taken to
ensure that when the affected
portion of the system is placed out of
service, there will be no interactions
which will cause a trip.
View I/O Diagnostic Reports and
examine active alarms in the
WorkstationST Alarm Viewer.

Handling Precautions

This equipment contains a potential hazard of electric

shock, burn, or death. Ensure that all Lockout/Tag Out
procedures are followed prior to replacing terminal boards.
Only personnel who are adequately trained and thoroughly
familiar with the equipment and the instructions should
install, operate, or maintain this equipment.

Handling Precautions

To prevent component damage caused by static

electricity, treat all boards with static sensitive handling
techniques. Wear a wrist grounding strap when handling
boards or components, but only after boards or
components have been removed from potentially
energized equipment and are at a normally grounded
workstation.

Here are the steps for performing a Backup from the controller to the USB
‡ Insert a USB drive into the front USB port on the UCSB.
‡ From the bottom of the UCSB, press and hold in the backup/restore
button until the USB On LED illuminates.
‡ Release the button and wait while the LED remains illuminated. The
backup is in progress. When the backup is completed successfully the
LED will turn off.
‡ Remove the USB drive. If the LED flashes at a 1 Hz rate the backup did
not complete successfully. Remove the USB or retry with another USB
drive.

17
20_Controller Maintenance & Replacement GE Proprietary & Confidential – For Training Purposes Only
UCSB Backup/Restore Considerations

‡ It is not possible at this time to capture the Firmware or Application

layers on the USB device. This is in marked contrast to the older
controllers which used the CompactFlash memory card. We must
therefore rely on the ToolboxST application to download Firmware and
Application code when replacing a controller
‡ Some sites do not allow the insertion of USB devices into any plant
equipment. In these cases we must download the initial configuration
via a serial connection to the controller’s COM port. See the following
three slides for this procedure.
