LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

APPLY HAND TREATMENT
Checking and Analyzing Condition of Client’s Hand

Objectives:
At the end of the session, you will be able to:
1. Identify conditions that may stop or change how the hands and nails are treated.
2. State why it is important to be able to recognize conditions that may stop or change a
hand and nail care treatment.
3. State possible reactions that may happen during or after the hand and nail care treatment
and the action to take.

Introduction:
As a nail technician, you must be fully aware of your client's condition before performing
any treatment. Not all types of treatment are suitable to each and every client. You must know
how to assess your client's present condition and recommend the proper treatment fitting to
his/her state. Failing to do so may result to worsening ones nail state instead of making it better.

Identify conditions that may stop or change how the hands and nails are treated
Conditions that may stop treatment: Fungal nail/skin infections,
bacterial nail/skin infections, viral nail/skin infections, severe eczema,
psoriasis or dermatitis, open wounds, cuts or abrasions local to treatment
area, bruising and nail plate separation (know when to seek medical
advice).
Conditions that may change treatment: Minor eczema, psoriasis or
dermatitis, damaged nails, dry overgrown cuticles, cuts and abrasions,
bruising.

Examples of contra-indications that may prevent treatment: Fungal

nail/skin infections, bacterial nail/skin infections, viral nail/skin infections,
severe eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis, open wounds/cuts/abrasions local
to treatment area, nail plate separation (know when to seek medical
advice).
Examples of contra-indications that may restrict treatment: Minor
eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis, damaged nails, dry overgrown cuticles,
cuts and abrasions, bruising
Importance of recognizing conditions that may stop or change a hand and nail care
treatment

Importance of identifying conditions: To avoid cross-infection and

making the condition worse.

Possible reaction: Allergic reaction Action – removes the product

immediately, wash hands, apply a cool compress, and seek medical advice
if symptoms continue.

Possible contra-actions: Allergic reaction e.g. redness, irritation or

swelling (remove product, apply cold compress, seek medical advice if
condition persists).
Heat on the nail plate: Too much pressure during nail buffing in the
wrong direction, stop buffing and apply cool compress.
