Same-Sex Marriage, Sign of Gender Equality

Same-sex marriage is the union of two individuals of the same sex in a marital
relationship, with the full legal rights and responsibilities in a jurisdiction. Supporters of
same-sex marriage may refer to it as “marriage equality,” while opponents may call it
“redefining marriage” (rationalwiki.org). The legalization of same-sex marriage has been an
issue for decades. Politicians all over the country spend hours debating on the pros and cons of
this issue. There are political disagreements, religious and social ones for the Catholic Church is
against this practice.

Some countries, however, broadened their perspective regarding this issue even though
for years, it has never been legally acknowledged, with some societies even considering it as
taboo. The United Kingdom, Spain, France, Argentina and the United States of America are
some countries that legalized it (Winter, Forest, and Senac, 2017). In the Philippines, same-sex
marriage is not yet legalized, but President Duterte is in favor of it. He said that he is an advocate
of the LGBT community and is against gender discrimination. Though many criticized him for
this, there are also some people, particularly LGBT members who support the president
(Tubeza).

Irrespective of any arguments, same-sex marriage should be legal because it is a

fundamental human right. Even though the LGBT or lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
community comprises only a small amount of the population, their feelings should still be
respected for love is love, whether it’s between a man and woman, two men, or two women; who
someone falls in love with is not a choice for it transcends beyond gender and race.

Same-sex marriage provides legal protection to homosexual couples on matters like

properties and finances. Similar to traditional heterosexual couples, if partners are not legally
married, then they do not have rights with each other’s accounts and insurances. With this, if two
homosexuals are living on the same roof without the certificate of marriage, then they cannot
enjoy the security to protect what they have worked for and saved together. Legalization would
make it possible to purchase properties together, open joint accounts, and sign documents
together as de jure couples (Winter, Forest, and Senac, 2017).

Marriage between the same sexes allows two people in love to live happily together with
the certificate of matrimony. Denying homosexual couples the right to marry is like denying
them the right to fall in love. It is an act of discrimination against a minority and a violation of
freedom. The main reason for prohibiting marriage between two homosexuals is that religious
affiliations consider it a sin. However, religious and civil marriages are two separate institutions.
Civil unions and marriage by the state are not religious rites or activities.
Homosexual couples are given the right to start families just like heterosexual couples
through the legalization of same-sex marriage. Opponents may say that marriage needs to be
procreative and procreation is not possible between two people with the same sexes. However,
there are other means of having children and an example of this is the means of adoption or
looking into foster care systems. This process will be easier if the homosexual couple is legally
married and widely accepted in society.

Those who are against same-sex marriage believe that legalizing it would threaten the
sanctity of the institution of marriage, for it would open a door for the other “atrocities” such as
interfamily marriages and polygamy. However, what is missing in this argument is the definition
of the ideal marriage, which is decided by two consenting adults. Marriage is defined as the state
of being united as spouses that are recognized by law, but it does not say that it should be
between two people with different sexes. A man-wife union is not cognizant of the true meaning
of marriage for wedlock is something personal and must not be dictated by others. Traditions and
religions should not be used against same-sex couples because not all the time that these beliefs
are correct.

Genders are outside labels, it does not show on what is on the inside of a person. Being
gay is not a sin and considering it as one is like using God in justifying prejudices, never use it
just to hate someone. With this, same-sex marriage should be legalized as it is a sign that there is
gender equality in a certain country, for it actualizes the right of all citizens, no matter what the
gender is. It gives everyone equality to express what he/she is without being afraid to be judged.
Individuals should have their standpoint and should not be dictated by the community on what
they are, and who to love for loving someone is never a choice. It comes when it comes. You can
never know when it takes place or how it happens. Remember, love touches the heart, and that is
what's important.
