ONE ACT PLAY SCENE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Drama and Play Differentiated

Drama is a form of written literature which is either prose or verse, usually

in dialogue-form that is intended for performance. The word drama originated
from the Greek word ‘dran’ meaning “to do,”. Therefore, it is usually associated
with the idea of action. Drama is generally thought of as a story about events in
the lives of characters.

Play is said to originate from the Middle Dutch word ‘pleien’ meaning
‘leap for joy’,’ dance’. It is a form of literature written by a playwright. It is often
used to refer to the written work of the playwright (script) as well as the onstage
production.

What is ONE- ACT- PLAY?

A one- act- play is a short piece of drama that consist of only one act. It is
the dramatic equivalent of a short story, tends to concentrate on a single
episode or situation. As a general rule, it has only two or three characters. One-
act-play is a separate literary form by itself and it is called as “tenner” because
of the short length with a running time between 30 and 45 minutes.

A one-act play is an independent as well as a self-sufficient form of art. It

also consists of all the elements that you find in a full-length play such as
setting, characters, property, stage, conflict, point of view, theme and etc. It also
has an organic form with beginning, middle and an end. It is short and requires
no elaborate setting and costumes, and so comes in handy to be staged in
amateur dramatic societies and clubs. It is the best training ground for the new
aspirants to dramatic fame.

Chief Characteristics of One-Act-Play

The following are considered characteristics:

 It has only one act, but may consists of one or more scenes.
84
 It deals with a single dominant situation and only one theme
developed which aims at producing a single effect.
 It treats the problem of everyday life such as love, marriage, divorce,
justice, crimes, punishment for crimes, law, labor conditions,
superstitions, customs and manners, etc.
 There are three dramatic unities which are observed-the unity of
time, unity of place and the unity of action.
 The characters in a one-act play are limited in number. Generally,
there are not more than two or three principal characters.
 There is an influence of realism. The characters in the modern one-
act play are ordinary men & women. It depicts characters that seems
to be real & related to everyday life.
 Dialogue is of the greatest importance - every word is to be carefully
chosen and sentences must be compact and condensed.
 It should have beginning, middle and an end which is divided into
four stages: The Exposition, The Conflict, The Climax and the
Denouement.

The Exposition is usually brief, serves as an introduction to

the play.

It is through the Conflict that the action of the drama

develops. It is the very backbone of the one-act play.

The Climax is the turning point of the drama.

It is an important part of the one-act play & constitutes its
moment of supreme interest.

The Denouement is the next and the final stage of the One-
Act Play which is very brief & often overlaps with climax.
