Essay on Caring in Nursing Practice

The Meaning of Caring

Caring is demonstrated in nursing as well as in other professions through the
attainment of aptitudes and practices consistent with beliefs about one’s professional
role: cognitive, affective, technical, and administrative(Roach, 2002). Caring is
considered to be unique in nursing, not unique to nursing (Roach, 2002). As the
“human mode of being,” caring does not distinguish nursing from other professions or
occupations, for example, medicine, social work, teaching, or parenting. Caring is
unique in nursing in that it subsumes all other characteristics descriptive of nursing
(Roach, 2002).
a. Compassion
Compassion is described as the ability to enter into the experience of the
other; to engage in activities with another individual in a way that is
supportive (Roach, 2002). Sharing offers an opportunity to engage with
awareness in a relationship that includes both the cognitive and the affective
response of the nurse.
b. Competence
Competence is our aptitude to acquire and comprehend knowledge,
applying the expertise required to provide for specific needs and to view
another with dignity in a holistic manner allows us to demonstratethis caring
attribute (Roach, 2002).
c. Conscience
Conscience is defined as a state of moral awareness guiding the
healthcare professional’s attentiveness to ethical issues(Roach, 2002). To
develop a conscience sensitive to moral issues, we must act from a place of
informed knowledge.
d. Confidence
Confidence is portrayed as “… the quality that fosters trusting
relationships”(Roach, 2002, p. 56). When healthcare personnel are dedicated
to a patient-centred approach, the development of a trusting relationship is
easier to achieve (Hentz &Lauterbach, 2005; Rundqvist & Lindström,2005).
e. Commitment
Commitment is depicted as a complex affective response characterized by a
convergence between one’s desires and one’s obligations, and by the deliberate
choice to act in accordance with them (Roach, 2002,p. 62). Commitment is
evident when choice is so firm that what one commits oneself to do is
synonymous with what one prefers to do. It shapes one’s identity as a
professional, caring person.
