Data is being widely dubbed as “the new oil” and its limitless potential has captivated me. My aspiration
to work at the frontiers of Data Science coupled with a related three year industry experience has
inspired me to seek an admission to the MS in Computer Science program at Northeastern University.
During my undergraduate study in Computer Science at SSN College of Engineering, I have gained a
sound understanding of a myriad of Computer Science fundamentals. I have stellar grades in all
programming courses which is a testament to my programming prowess. My final year thesis, “Two-
Stage Constraint based approach for Declarative Data Driven Coordination (D3C)”, was published in the
International Journal of Computer Information Systems.
My interest in Data Science was first kindled during a two day seminar on Big Data in the final year of my
undergraduate study. My interest primarily lies in data mining and visualization of data from social
media sources. Currently, my personal research is focused on topic detection and sentiment analysis of
Twitter data streams. I am also exploring interactive visualizations offered through D3.js and raphael.js
libraries for effectively presenting the results of my analyses.
Post the completion of my undergraduate degree, I have gained industry experience in the role of an
analyst at the data sciences firm, Mu Sigma, and later at Amazon. I have been exposed to a gamut of Big
Data technologies and machine learning techniques during the three years of professional experience. I
received the quarterly award at Mu Sigma for the insights offered through the Big Data project,
purchase driver analysis of multi-device customers. Given my strong grasp over Python and R, I have also
conducted training sessions on these languages at Mu Sigma.
While my work has given me a wealth of exposure to a diverse set of Data Science problems, the
industry environment that I am currently in cannot support my burning desire for research. I possess
industry-hardened skills in Data Science, but I must build on these to achieve my goal of undertaking
cutting-edge research in the field. I therefore believe that it is an opportune time for me to return to the
academic world for further growth. After completing my MS program, I wish to remain associated with
an academic institution and continue research in the field of Data Science.
I want to pursue my graduate studies from Northeastern University for various reasons. First and
foremost, I will be highly benefited from interactions with the eminent faculty members at the
University. I share common interests with Associate Professor Lu Wang and would like to be a part of
her research group. Her paper “A Piece of My Mind: A Sentiment Analysis Approach for Online Dispute
Detection” on cross-language sentiment analysis of blogs, news articles, etc. particularly intrigues me.
Moreover, I believe that the state of the art research infrastructure and the talented peer group at the
University will provide an environment conducive to pursuing my interests.
I am aware that the University expects high standards from its students. I possess a strong grasp of
Computer Science and Data Science fundamentals, and a research oriented mindset that will enable me
to excel during the graduate program. I sincerely hope that my qualifications and background are found
suitable for the MS in Computer Science program at Northeastern University.
