1.Discuss the interrelationship of research to:
1.a Nursing education
 Quality research in nursing education is vital to establish best practices in teaching and
learning and provide the scientific basis for the practice of nursing education
 Research is very much important to nursing education because it helps them (nurses)
advance their field, stay updated and offer better patient care in an effective way. Nurses
gain skills to understand, evaluate and use research to advance more in their careers
 Research improves the quality of nursing education, and results in good implementation
and development of nursing profession
 Example: Through research, nurses are updated on how to administer different
medicines, to examine patient and to deliver best services to patients.

1.b Nursing practice

 Research enables nursing practice to keep pace with a rapidly changing world in which
health care practices must continually improve to meet changing and ever more
demanding patient expectations and requirements. Only through continued research
activity can appropriate evidence-based ‘best practice’ guidelines be introduced to
ensure the good quality nursing care
 Research helps nurses determine effective best practices and improve patient care.
Research also helps nursing respond to changes in the healthcare environment, patient
populations and government regulations. As researchers make discoveries, the practice
of nursing continues to change.
 Clinical practice generates research questions and knowledge for theory. Research
guides our practice and builds knowledge through theory development. Theory guides
research and improve practice.
 Effective nursing practice requires the application of knowledge, skills, caring, and art to
care for patients in an effective, efficient, and considerate way. An important part of the
knowledge used in making nursing clinical decisions is produced by research findings.
Ideally, all patient care decisions should be based on research-evidence. Research
findings are used to develop a protocol and the protocol is followed in daily nursing
practice.
 The National Institute of Nursing Research says that nursing research uncovers
knowledge to build the foundation of clinical practice and reinforce the following:
o Prevent disease and disability.
o Manage symptoms of illness.
o Enhance end-of-life care.
 Example: Meyer et al (2002) conducted a randomized clinical trial contrasting the
effectiveness of two different bandaging techniques nurses use for treating venous leg
ulcers. The study showed that ulcers treated with higher compression bandaging didn’t
heal any quicker than ulcers administered lower compression bandages.
o Clearly, this example illustrates how research evidence can influence clinical
practice. Meyer et al’s (2002) study could facilitate understanding of the impact of
bandaging, and improve care delivery, such that ulcer patients aren’t
unnecessarily inconvenienced by highly compressed bandaging which clearly
isn’t going to speed up recovery.
1.c Nursing Management &,
 According to the website Nursing World, nurses use research to affect positive outcomes
for their patients and for others within the healthcare system. As patients’ needs become
more complex and healthcare systems become more varied, nurses use evidence-
based care by incorporating their own nursing research with their professional
experience and a patient’s preferences. Nurses tries their best to manage every patient’s
problem and makes sure that they attend every patient’s needs with the best intervention
they know.
 Through research, nurses is more convenient to manage what to forecast and what to
plan; what to organize; what to command, what to coordinate and what to control in
delivering health care.
 By improving of nursing management, nurses do their day to day routine functions
required to sustain the improvement that research has contributed.
 Research plays an important role in the nursing management because it helps in
successful introduction and implementation of advanced practice nursing roles.
 Example: Strong nurse management helps encourage nurses to work as units, so they
need to have great interpersonal skills. They must be good at communication with
patients, their families, and other members of the staff. Strong communication and
teamwork are essential to providing quality patient care.

1.d Informatics
 In today’s dynamic health systems, technology plays an important role in education and
nursing work. So it seems necessary to study the role of nurses and highlight the need
for appropriate information technology educational programs to integrate with the ever-
increasing pace of technology.
 Nurse informatics is the driving force for transformation of health care, and our research will
have tremendous impact with adoption and implementation. This transformation of health
care includes intervention research, such as those reported earlier and expanded to larger
populations and settings.
 Nursing research involves the use of informatics in the discovery and management of new
knowledge relating to health and disease.
 It includes management of information related to clinical trials and also involves informatics
related to secondary research use of clinical data. Clinical research informatics and
translational bioinformatics are the primary domains related to informatics activities to
support translational research.
 In nursing, as with healthcare in general, informatics is being used to address the
challenges of the day, significantly impacting the way nurses function in patient care.
 One of the primary ways that informatics has changed nursing practice is through
documentation. Gone are the days of paper charts that had to be meticulously updated
with handwritten notes. Today, nurses are more likely to input notes into electronic
health records and other systems that keep a patient’s medical history up-to-date and
easily accessible.
 Example: Examples of this work include reports of testing the effectiveness of an
Internet pilot intervention for overweight and obese African American adults and
diabetes management system and are representative of the intervention studies this
project year. Joseph et al described the evaluation of an intervention designed to
increase motivation to participate in physical activity program. Chung et al reported that
the "Smart Care Service" (education and Web site) for diabetes management was
effective in reducing blood glucose and HbA1c levels
2.What are the potential consequences to the nursing profession if nurses stopped conducting
their own research?

 If nurses stopped conducting their own research, nursing profession would be totally
outdated with new information and technologies; there will be no upgrades about
improvement of patient care; there will be deficit knowledge in healthcare system; there
will be a stagnant practice all throughout without even upgrading since no one does
research; nurses may have lose their confidence in result because they can no longer
reason out why a clinical decision or intervention was made on that patient; and on top
of that, nurse and patient safety will be totally at risk.

3. The health care delivery system in the Philippines has adopted changes to promote and
maintain quality client care. How could this/these change/s influence nursing research and the
use of research findings? U may cite an example to explain.
 The Philippine health care system has rapidly evolved with many challenges through
time both public and private facilities. It is dominated by public sectors while being
supported by private health care service providers.
 The rendering of health care services to the people is called health care delivery system.
Thus, health care delivery system is the network of health facilities and personnel which
carries out the task of rendering health care to the people.
 Through this changes that our health care delivery system has adopted, nursing
research plays an important role to achieve those because it undergo an assessment
and experiment on how to improve or upgrade it. For example, more technological
innovations have emerged compared before that most hospitals do manual and it makes
harder for them (nurses) to facilitate. Just like the RxBox. RxBox is a device which
captures medical signals through built-in sensors, stores data in an electronic medical
record (EMR), and transmits health information via internet.Jointly developed by the
University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and Manila, the device reduces unnecessary
travels and hospitalizations as it enables diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients
from geographically isolated and depressed areas of the country
