1. Here are some questions to answer and you can write it to 1 whole sheet of bond
paper. I hope that I will hear some insights from you.

a. What do you think is the importance of Thermodynamics to you as engineering

students?

Thermodynamics is a fundamental science which governs the energy aspect of the

whole universe. It is equally necessary for chemistry and may be atomic physics
anything to do with energy.

b. As a future engineer, how can you apply thermodynamics to your chosen career?

Laws of Thermodynamics are used in vehicles, therefore it’s the major branch of
Mechanical Engineering. Thermodynamics is a branch of science which deals with
the study of heat and temperature and their relation to other forms of energy. It
applies to a variety of science and engineering topics such as chemical, physical,
and mechanical engineering. This branch was basically developed out of a desire to
improve the efficiency of steam engines.

c. Knowing all the properties of matter, can you sight some course in your program
that can also apply those things?

Thermodynamics is heart of mechanical engineering. Be it any processes or any

engines, all follow some or the other thermodynamics laws. Thermodynamics
principles are used by mechanical engineers in the fields of heat conversion.
Mechanical engineers use thermo-science to design engines and power plants,
heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, heat exchanger, heat
sinks, radiators, refrigeration, insulation and others.

Common SI Units
Length

Si unit: Pascal (Pa)

1 pascal = 1 N/m2

= 1 kg/m * s2
1 atmosphere = 101.325 kilopascals

= 760. mmHg

= 760 torr

= 14.70 lb/in2

= 1.01325 bar

1 bar = 105 Pa (exact)

Energy
SI unit: Joule (J)
1 joule = 1 kg * m2/s2

= 0.23901 calorie

= 1C x 1V

1 calorie = 4.184 joules

Mass
SI unit: Kilogram (kg)

1 kilogram = 1000. grams

1 gram = 1000. milligrams

1 pound = 453.59237 grams

= 16 ounces

1 ton = 2000. pounds

Temperature
Si unit: Kelvin (K)

K = 273.15 °C

K = °C + 273.15 °C

? °C = (5 °C/9 °F)(°F - 32 °F)

? °F = (9 °F/5 °C)°C + 32 °F
