Answer: The start node denotes the day 31st of March and the end node denote the wedding day i.e.
the 22nd April. The various paths obtained from the network diagram are:
The family has 21 days for the preparation, so any path more than or equal to 21 days is critical and
might need to crashing to accommodate the wedding on the 22nd day.
The Path 1 is exactly 21 days, the path 5 and 6 are more than 21 days and hence all are critical but
path 5 and 6 have to be crashed.
Question 3: What is the minimum-cost plan that meets the April 22 date?
Answer:
Path 5
Time would be reduced to receive Lace to 5 days (cost $25), reduce Clean & Press to 1 day (cost
$30), and hire Mrs. Watson 1 day to reduce Sew Dress to 10 (cost $120) days. This would reduce the
path length to exactly 21 days at a cost of $175. (This is assuming it is possible to hire Mrs. Watson
for just 1 day).
Path 6
Time would be reduced to receive the Invitations to 5 days (cost $35) and hire help to address
Invitations to reduce this time to 2 days (cost $50). This would reduce the path length to exactly 21
days at a cost of $85.
The minimum cost to have the wedding on 22nd April is $260 ($175 + $85)
Scenario 1: On April 1 the Chairman of Vestry Committee at the church was left unimpressed by
the added donation and said he wouldn’t reduce the notice period from 17 to 10 days
Answer: There won’t be any problem as the Path 1 A-B-C is exactly 21 days and a non-reduction in
the notice period won’t affect the wedding plans.
Scenario 2: A call to Guatemala revealed that the potential bridesmaid had several commitments
and could not possibly leave the country until April 10
Answer: If the bridesmaid cannot start before 10th April it is a problem as under normal
circumstances she will be taking 10 days to reach which means 20 th April and then she needs another
4 days to fit and clean her dress; even if we crash the cleaning and pressing to 1 day still it will be late
.
The solution is to fly down the bridesmaid in 2 days which will cost another 500$ which will leave
enough time for the dress fitting and cleaning.
Scenario 3: Mother came down with the four-day flu just as she started on the guest list
Answer: The path 7 will be affected and since this path is already 19 days long a delay of 4 days to
start the activity will result in non-completion of all the activity before the wedding day, hence
another alternative has to be considered.
Scenario 4: The lace and dress materials were lost in transit. Notice of the loss was delivered to
Jackson home early on April 10
Answer: Since the information was received on 10th April the family has just 11 days to complete
the process of acquiring the laces and then sewing before fitting and cleaning. The option the family
has is to acquire laces as early as possible and then depending on the days available take the services
of Mrs. Watson and see to it they have at least 3 days in hand for trial and washing. Hiring Mrs.
Watson is costly and hence will have an impact on the total cost of the wedding also care should be
taken as this is critical path and has already been crashed before.
Scenario 5: There was a small fire at the caterer’s shop on April 8. It was estimated that the shop
would be closed two or three days for repairs
Answer: If the notice was given prior to the accident and the caterer takes an extra 2-3 days then
there should not be any problem as the path 2 is of 13 days and delay of 2-3 days should not affect the
wedding plan.
