1. INTRODUCTION

The DMA 48 Density / Specific Gravity / Concentration Meter determines the

density and Specific Gravity of liquids and gases.

The temperature of the sample is controlled by a built-in solid state

thermostat.

Density can automatically bG converted into concentration values (e.g. °Brix,

% alcohol, % sulfuric acid), if corresponding custom functions are
programmed into the instrument. Custom functions are also available for the
density of petroleum products at 15 °C or 60 °F to be automatically
calculated from density at other measuring temperatures based on API
standard routines.

The DMA 48 can be connected to a printer and PC.

For density measurements at high pressure and/or temperature external

measuring cells (optional) can be connected to the DMA 48.

Optionally available are automatic Sample Changers SP 1 or SP 3 and the

automatic Filling and Rinsing System FRS.

A25IB01

5. INSTALLING AND PREPARING THE
DMA 48 FOR OPERATION

5.1 Installation Conditions

HINTS:

• The DMA 48 does not require any special installation conditions.

• It is not necessary to level the DMA 48, nor to ensure that the
installation location is completely free of vibrations.

• For some applications, e.g. gassy samples, it might be beneficial to put

spacers below thetwo right legs of the DMA 48, thus putting the
DMA 48 at an angle. In this case, adjustment and measurement have to
be done with the DMA 48 in the same position.

• However, to guarantee temperature stability, do not place the DMA 48

- near a heater
- near an air conditioner
in direct sunlight.

NOTE:
A strong built-in cooling fan dissipates heat through the bottom of the
DMA 48. Care must therefore be taken that the airflow at the bottom is not
blocked.

Make sure that the tip of each Teflon adapter is directed into the center
of the appropriate bore of the measuring cell.

14 A25IB01
4. Tighten the adapters until some resistance against revolving can be felt.

NOTE:

• Do not screw in the adapters too firmly.

• Do not use any tools for screwing in the adapters.

5. Continue to turn the adapters to the next possible position for locking
the port lock (90° turn at the most).

6. Lock the adapters by sliding the port lock (1) down.

NOTE:
During transportationof the DMA 48 theadapters should be removed,.
Otherwise the glass measuring eel! may be damaged.

7. Check the connection of the adapters to the measuring cell for tightness
by closing one adapter tightly with a finger.

8. Fill air under moderate pressure through the other adapter using a 2 ml
plastic syringe from the accessory box.

9. Release the plunger of the syrfnge.

• If the connections are tight, the plunger of the syringe will be slowly
pushed back by the pressure in the measuring cell.
• If the connections are leaking, no pressure was built up in the
measuring cell and the plunger will not move. Tighten the adapters
again.

A25IB01 15
5.3 The Air Pump

NOTE:
Never connect the siiicone hose to the "AIR IN" nozzle of the air pump
in order to prevent damage of the built-in air pump (e.g. due to sample
contamination).

HINT:

In case of high air humidity, which means more than

• 70 % relative humidity (RH) at20 °C ambient temperature

• 50% relative humidity (RH) at£5°C or
• 38 % relative humidity (RH) at30°C at measuring temperature of20°C,

a desiccator has to be connected to the "AIR IN" nozzle of the air pump.
If the measuring temperature is 15°C> the relative humidity at ambient
temperature must be lower accordingly.
Otherwise humidity condensations in the measuring cell may cause
adjustment and measurement errors.
Suitable desiccators are available at Anton Paar.

3. Key in: 20 J

HINTS:

• The display marked "act. temp." shows the actual temperature of the
solid state thermostat, the display marked "set temp." shows the
selected measuring temperature.

• "X" at the front of the DMA 48 flashes until the sample tempera ture
agrees with the set temperature and the oscillation period of the
measuring cell is stable.

• If the measuring temperature is changed by more than 10°C,a

minimum waiting period of two hours is recommended before
measurement or adjustment.

• If no valid adjustment at the measuring temperature is a vailable, only '

the period can be displayed on the large display. Ail other display
settings will show "-CAL-". Acknowledge with "J" and adjust according
to chapter 8.

A25IB01 27
8. ADJUSTMENTS

HINTS:

• An adjustment is required to measure density and density related

values.

• An adjustment has to be performed:

After a master reset (see chapter 7.2).

- After the expiry of the validity ot the adjustment: after a set number
of days the adjustment will expire automatically (see master reset
chapter 7.2). Default value is 100 days. Only the oscillation period of
the measuring cell will be displayed then. Attempts to switch the
display to other settings will cause the display to show "-CAL-". This
reading has to be acknowledged by " J " and then anadjustment has
to be performed.

If deviations between displayed values and reference values of

density standards consistently exceed the specifications of the
DMA 48 and the standards.

• It is not recommended and does not improve the performance of the

DMA 48 at all to perform a new adjustment, as long as checks
(calibrations) with proper standards indicate no deviations from the
reference values.

• Two standards with known density a t measuring tempera ture are

required for adjustment. Their density values must differ by more than
0.01 g/cm3 and should bracket the total density range required.

• The density values of water and dry air at standard pressure

(1013 mbar, 101325 Pa) are stored in the memory ofAheiDMA 48.

28 A251B01
8.1 Adjustment with Air and Water

HINTS:

• The adjustment with air and water has to be completed within one day.

• If a sample changer is connected to the DMA 48, refer also to the

sample changer handbook for the correct adjustment procedure.

1. Use a syringe or a proper sampling system (e.g. a sample changer) to Adjusting with
clean the measuring cell carefully by rinsing it with water or a proper air and water
solvent to remove sample residues.

2. Rinse the measuring cell with at least 5 ml of 96 % ethanol.

3. Attach the air hose (see chapter 5.3) to the measuring cell.

HINT:
Check whether the air humidity does not exceed the limits given in
chapter 5.3 for working without a desiccator.

4. Turn on the air pump using the "pump" switch on the front of the
DMA 48.

5. Let dry air blow through the measuring cell for at least 10 minutes.

6. Turn off the air pump.

7. Remove the air hose from the measuring cell.

8. Turn on the measuring cell light and check the measuring cell. Make
sure there is no obvious moisture or dirt in the measuring cell.

temperature for at least two hours prior to adjustment

10. Wait until the DMA 48 is stable ("Xn does not flash).

11. Press "F500" and " J" to select the oscillation period as display reading.

12. Press "F100" and "J". This starts the air adjustment routine.

13. The density of air at an air pressure of 1013.25 mbar <=hPa) at the
selected measuring temperature will be displayed.

• If all measurements are done within 0.75 and 1.25 g/cm3 and the
DMA 48 is located at an altitude above sea level of less than
1000 m, then no correction of the displayed air density is necessary.
Otherwise select the correct air density according to appendix G in
respect to the local air pressure and the set measuring temperature.
• In case of a correction overwrite the value and acknowledge the
correct value with "J".
• In case of agreement acknowledge the displayed value with
"j".

14. A red "X" and a green "g /cm3" will be flashing on the front of the
DMA 48. This indicates that the air adjustment procedure is in progress.

15. Wait until the air adjustment is finished (about 2 minutes). This is given
as soon as "g/cm3" and the red "X" on the front.of the DMA 48 do not
flash anymore.

16. Note down the oscillation period of the measuring cell (F500) for air in
the adjustment report (see appendix I).

17. Take a clean syringe with a Luer tip and fill it with bi-distilled water.

HINTS:

• To avoid the formation of gas bubbles, the water should be a few

degrees warmer than the set measuring temperature.

• Distilled water for adjustments at high tempera lures has to be

degassed by boiling it immediately before use.

30 A25IB01
18. Slowly inject the water into the measuring cell through the adapter
Record Luer female until drops are coming out of the adapter Record
Luer male. Leave the syringe in the adapter.

HINT:
A minimum of 2 ml of bi-distilled water should be filled.

19. Before starting the water adjustment, check the following:

• Turn on the measuring cell light using the "light" switch.

• Check whether the measuring cell is free of any bubbles. If there
are bubbles, remove the water, rinse the measuring cell with
ethanol and dry it carefully. Then filJ the measuring cell with bi- .
distilled water again.
• Turn off the measuring cell light.

20. Wait until the "X" stops flashing.

21. Press "F101" and "J". This starts the water adjustment routine.

22. The density of water at your measuring temperature will appear on the
display. Check the given value {see density table of water in
appendix G), and acknowledge the value with " J " .

23. A red "X" and a green "g /cm 3 " will be flashing on the front of the
DMA 48. This indicates that the water adjustment is in progress.

24. Wait until the water adjustment is finished {about 3 minutes). This is
given as soon as " g / c m 3 " a n c l * n e " x " o n t n e f r o n t o f t n e DMA 48 stop
flashing. At the same time "dev. B" and a number wiil be displayed.

25. • If this is the very first adjustment at.the selected temperature, or the
first adjustment at the selected temperature after a master reset, the
display should now show a number between 1.3 and 1.6.
If the number on the display is within this range, press " J " . The
adjustment is now complete. Go to step 26.

• If this is not the first adjustment at the selected temperature, the

number on the display should be between -0.0002 and +0.0002, if
the previous adjustment was valid.
If so, press" J". The adjustment is now complete. Go to step 26.

• If the number on your display is outside these ranges, some part of
the adjustment failed and the entire adjustment procedure needs to
be re-done. Press "CLR" to abort the adjustment procedure. Check
again the measuring cell for cleanliness, and perform a complete
. . cleaning procedure if necessary. Then start from the beginning. If
then the number of dev. B is identical to the previously obtained
dev. B {± 0.0002), then press "J".

26. Before removing the adjustment water from the measuring cell:

• Note down the oscillation period of the measuring cell (F 500) for
water in the adjustment report (see appendix I).
• Also note down the apparatus constants A and B with 5 places after
the decimal point. These constants can be displayed and printed out
by using function F 110 (see chapter 8.4).
• Also plot the value of the apparatus constant Bin-the appropriate
diagram (copy form see appendix I). After several adjustments
check the quality of the adjustment procedure by examining the
value of the apparatus constant B (see appendix I).

27. Rinse the measuring cell with ethanol and dry it using the built-in air
pump (see steps 2. to 7.).

32 A25IB01
8.2 Adjustment with Two Standards of Known
Density

NOTE:
Before filling any sample into the DMA 48, make sure that all wetted parts,
being made of Teflon and borosilicate glass, are resistant to the sample.

HINTS:

differences in density have been used, then the limits of 1.3 to 1.6
may be exceeded. Press "J" and measure again both standards.
The correct densities (F505) have to be displayed. If not, restart at
step 1.

• If this is not the first adjustment with the same standards at the
selected temperature, the number on the display should be between
-0.0002 and +0.0002, if the previous adjustment was valid.
If so, press "J". The adjustment is now complete. Go to step 39.

• If different standards are applied as for the previous adjustment at

the same temperature, then the displayed deviation B is of no
significance, if it exceeds ±0.0002, still acknowledge the adjustment
with " j " , go to step 39 and then measure again both standards. The
correct densities (F505) have to be displayed. If not, restart at
step 1.

• If the displayed deviation B exceeds ±0.0002 with the same

standards applied as for the previous adjustment, some part of the
adjustment failed and the entire adjustment procedure needs to be
repeated. Press "CLR" to abort the adjustment procedure. Check
again the measuring cell for cleanliness, and perform a complete
cleaning-procedure if necessary. Then start from the beginning. If
then the number of dev. B is identical to the previously obtained
dev. B (± 0.0002), then press "J".

39. Before removing the density standard 2 from the measuring cell:

• Note down the oscillation period of the measuring cell (F 500) for
density standard 2 in the adjustment report (see appendix I).
• Also note down the apparatus constants A and B with 5 places after
the decimal point. These constants can be displayed and printed out
by using function F110 (see chapter 8.4).
• Also plot the value of the apparatus constant B in the appropriate
diagram (copy form see appendix I). After several adjustments
check the quality of the adjustment procedure by examining the
value of the apparatus constant B (see appendix I). The results may
only be significant if always the same standards are applied for
adjustment.

40. Rinse the measuring cell with an appropriate cleaning solvent and dry it
with the built-in air pump (see steps 22. to 28.).

A25IB01 37
8.3 Storage of Several Adjustments

HINTS:

• Up to 20 adjustments at the same measuring temperature or at different

measuring temperatures can be stored.

• For each different measuring temperature one adjustment has to be

performed. It is linked to the selected measuring temperature and will be
activated automatically when changing the measuring temperature.

• In order to store several adjustments at the same measuring

temperature (e.g. different adjustments for different density ranges) use
20.00010 for the first adjustment, 20.00020 for the second and so on.
The "act. temp." display will always show 20.0 °C and will not be
influenced. You need to key in F300 J (selected temperature) J to find
out which adjustment is actually selected.

• When storing the 21st adjustment the oldest one will be deleted.

8.5 Possible Errors During the Adjustment
Procedure

1. Direct sunlight on the DMA 48.

Make sure that the DMA 48 is not exposed to direct sunlight.

2. Measuring cell light not turned off.

Make sure that the "light" switch at the front of the DMA 48 is turned off
during adjustment.

3. Measuring cell is not clean.

Make sure that the measuring cell is perfectly cleaned before
adjustment.

4. Measuring cell not perfectly dry before air adjustment. There are drops
of liquid or humidity condensations in the measuring cell.

• Clean the measuring cell according to chapter 11, and dry it

carefully.
• If condensations are still visible through the visual control of the
measuring cell, then the atmospheric humidity is too high. Connect
a drying cartridge (desiccator) to the "IN" nozzle of the air pump
(see chapter 5.3).

5. Air bubbles in the measuring cell at adjustment with water or other liquid
standard.
Make sure that liquid standards are free of gas bubbles.

6. Adjustment error ("g/cm3" and "X" flash, "E-00-00" is displayed).

• The adjustment was started before the DMA 48 reached

temperature stability.
• Measuring cell light not turned off (see point 2. above).
• Measuring cell not totally dried at air adjustment (see point 4.
above).
• Adjustment for both standards not carried out on the same day.
• Measuring cell contains air bubbles at water adjustment (see point
5. above).
• Possible error indications on the large display (E-xx-yy) and ways to
overcome them are contained in appendix A.

10. MEASUREMENTS

10.1. Checking the Adjustment before the

Measurement

HINTS:

• Check the validity of the adjustment of the DMA 48 using degassed,

distilfed water. An inaccurate adjustment can be recognized by a
deviation of the density reading of water from the true density at
measuring temperature (see density tables, appendix G).

• Therefore check the density of degassed, distilled water before each

series of measurements.

• If the adjustment has been made with other standards but water, a
larger deviation may occur for water, in this case check for the
repeatability of this value only, or use the adjustment standards for
checking.

1. Fill the dry and clean measuring cell with degassed, distilled water. Checking the
adjustment with
2. Wait until temperature equilibrium is reached. This is given as soon as water
the red "X" at the front of the DMA 48 stops flashing.

3. Compare the displayed value of true density (F 505) with the

corresponding value in the table in appendix G.

4. • If the compared values agree, measurements can be performed.

• If the value of the true density deviates more than ±0.0001 g/cm3
from the corresponding value of the table, then clean and dry the
measuring cell (see chapter 11) and fill it again with degassed,
distilled water.

• If the value of true density still deviates more than ±0.0001 g/cm3
from the corresponding value of the table carry out a new
adjustment (see chapter 8).

A25IB01 45
10.2 Sample Preparation

NOTE:

• Before filling any sample into the DMA 48,

- make sure that all wetted parts, being made of Teflon and
borosilicate glass, are resistant to the sample.

work out a proper cleaning procedure for the measuring cell (see
chapter 11).

• Samples with a modera te tendency to attack borosilicate glass like

strong alkali solutions (e.g. caustic soda) can be measured with the
DMA 48. However, take care to remove such samples immediately after
measurement and rinse the measuring cell properly. Check the validity
of the adjustment more frequently than generally recommended.
Perform a new adjustment, if necessary. The measuring temperature for
strong alkali solutions should not be higher than 20 °C. Higher
temperatures dramatically increase the speed of corrosion.

HINTS:

• The sample to be filled into the measuring cell has to be homogenous

and free of gas bubbles.

• A sample temperature similar to the measuring temperature reduces the

measuring time.

• Suspensions may tend to separate in the measuring cell, giving

incorrect results. Such samples should remain in the measuring cell
only briefly. It is therefore recommended to pre-thermostate them before
filling. Reduce the stability criterion (see appendix E). It may help to put
spacers below the left legs of the DMA 48, thus putting it at an angle to
counterbalance the separation force generated by the oscillation of the
measuring cell.

• If the sample to be measured tends to form bubbles during the

temperature equilibrium or measurement, introduce the sample at a
higher temperature. Another remedy may be to put the meter at an
angle by means of proper spacers below the right side of the DMA 48 to
allow the bubbles to escape (buoyancy).

46 A25IB01
10.3 Filling of the Sample

HINT:

There are several choices to fill the samples into the measuring cell:

• manually, using a syringe with Luer tip

• by gra vity, using a funnel at the inlet and a valve (e.g. a clamp to block a
flexible hose) at the outlet

• semi-automatically, using a peristaltic pump or an aspirator pump

• automatically, using the Anton Paar Filling and Rinsing System FRS
(see FRS handbook)

• automatically, using the Anton Paar Sample Changers SP1 or SP3 (see
SP1 orSP3 instruction handbook).

10.3.1 Riling with a Syringe

Waste

Fig. 10.3.1-1

A251B01 47
NOTE:

• Make sure that there is a waste bottle at the outlet of the DMA 48.

• Never fill the samples without the filling equipment (see chapter 5.2) in
order to avoid glass breakage of the measuring celt.

• Attach the syringe to the adapter Record Luer female of the filling
equipment.

• Proper filling of the measuring cell can be observed through the window
with the cell tight being switched on. After the fiiiing procedure turn off
the cell light.

• Take care that the entire visible part of the measuring cell is filled with
sample. For this, a sample amount of approximately 1 ml is necessary.

• The sample has to be filled into the measunng ceil by pushing the
plunger of the syringe slowly and continuously, thereby avoiding the
formation of tiny (invisible) gas bubbles which influence the measuring
result.

• Leave the syringe in the filling position, in order that the filled-in sample
does not leak out.

48 A25IB01
10.3.2 Filling with a Peristaltic Pump

Sample

Waste
Fig. 10.3.2-1

NOTE:

• Use two adapters Record Luer male for the hose connections.

• Make sure that there is a waste bottle at the outlet of the peristaltic
pump.

• A flow rate of 5 to 25 ml / minute is recommended for filling the sample.

• Make sure that the pump hose is compatible with all samples and
cleaning liquids.

• Turn off the pump after filling a proper amount of sample and wait for
the instrument to reach stability.

A25IBO1 49
10.4 Actual Measurement, Measuring Results

NOTE:

• After filling the sample into the measuring celt

make sure that the cell light is turned off during measurement.

wait until the red "X" on the front of the DMA 48 stops flashing. Then
the measuring result is valid.

• If a printer is connected and activated (see chapter 9.2) and F605 has
been entered as printer setting, a printout will occur every time the "X"
stops flashing.

Example for a printout:

Date 1996 2 4
Time 11 15 56
Temperature 20.0
Cell: Internal
Period: 3901.78
Density 1.0434

• Clean and dry the measuring cell after each measurement (see
chapter 11), if very different samples are to be measured. For similar
samples it is usually sufficient to replace the old sample by larger
amount (e.g. 10 ml) of the new sample.

4 Do not leave samples in the measuring cell longer than absolutely

necessary. Replace the sample by proper solvent and clean and dry the
measuring cell as soon as possible.

10.6 The Influence of Viscosity on Density
Measurement

Increasing sample viscosities up to 500 mPa.s cause an increasing density

deviation. Above 500 mPa.s, the density deviation is independent of
viscosity and constant.
For air and water adjustments, the following can be applied to correct the
influence of viscosity on the measured density:

• For sample viscosities between 0 and 100 mPa.s the influence is

negligible due to a built-in viscosity compensation for this range.

• For samples with a viscosity T\ between 100 and 500 mPa.s the density
has to be corrected according to following equation:

Pcorrected = Pmeasured X [1 + (10 - f f f ) X 0.000048]

TI .... viscosity at measuring temperature

• For sample viscosities above 500 mPa.s the following correction

applies:

11. CLEANING AND DRYING OF THE
MEASURING CELL

Cleaning and 1. Fill the measuring cell with cleaning liquid 1 by using a syringe with Luer
Drying cone, and move the plunger of the syringe in and out several times. This
creates air bubbles which improve the cleaning action. Instead of a
syringe, any other suitable device like a peristaltic pump can be used.

NOTE:

• Find a proper cleaning liquid 1 before the first measurement.

• The cleaning liquid 1 should dissolve residues in the measuring cell.

• Cleaning liquid 1 must be selected so that no chemical reactions

with the sample and cleaning liquid 2 are to be expected.

• For water soluble residues water can be used.

• For residues not soluble, in water an appropriate cleaning liquid is to

be used.

• For proteins, sugars or similar organic residues a highly

concentrated alcohol as cleaning liquid 1 must not be used, as it
may form insoluble precipitates in the measuring cell.

2. Remove the cleaning liquid 1 from the measuring cell.

3. Fill the measuring cell with cleaning liquid 2 by using a syringe with Luer
tip, and move the plunger of the syringe several times in and out.

NOTE:

• The cleaning liquid 2 should be volatile at measuring temperature.,.,

• Cleaning liquid 2 must be selected so tha t no chemical reactions

with cleaning liquid 1 are to be expected.

4. Remove the cleaning liquid 2 from the measuring ceil.

5. Attach the air hose (see chapter 5.3) to the adapter Record Luer female.

HINT:
Check whether the air humidity does not exceed the limits given in
chapter 5.3 for working without a desiccator.

54 A25IB01
6. Tum on the air pump using the "pump" switch on the front of the
DMA 48.

7. Let air blow through the measuring cell for several minutes.

8. Turn off the air pump.

9. Remove the air hose from the adapter.

12. CUSTOM FUNCTIONS

HINTS:

Anton Paarprovides an assortment of approx. 140 tables and different

formulas to convert the density of samples into other density related
values, like Brix, API, %v/v alcohol, specific gravity, etc.

Up to 3 (special 4) formulas and/or tables provided by Anton Paar or the

customer can be programmed. Contact your local representative for
details.

If custom functions are programmed, refer to the programming report

delivered with each set. of programmed custom functions for display
settings and parameter (temperature, product group, etc.) selections.

If the density related value is out of range of the custom function, " "
is shown on the display of the DMA 48.

Density/concentration tables: Concentrations are calculated by

interpolation from the 2 adjacent table values.

Density/concentration formulas: Concentrations are calculated using

linear or non-linear equations.

Examples:

• F-RHO The Density Function:

This function is a polynomial which can be used to convert density into
any useful unit. The polynomial form is

F-RHO = A1

where p is the density of the sample and A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 are the
polynomial coefficients, which can be entered in the DMA 48 using the
keyboard.

• F-API The API Gravity function:

This function converts the density of a crude or petroleum product,
measured at any temperature, to the API gravity number, the density at
15 °C or 60 °F and the Specific Gravity. In order to get the correct results,
the correct product group must be selected on the DMA 48 (A, B or D).

• F-SG The Specific Gravity Function:

This function calcutates the specific gravity of the sample at measuring

> D(213) shows the current condition of the measurement in the following
format:

D(213) = 1xxx1yyyE+00

xxx: indicates whether the measuring value is stable

xxx = 000 The measuring value is stable and valid, if the value
foryyy<128.

xxx = 128 The measuring value is unstable.

Other values will occur during operating the

keyboard of the DMA 48. Any value other than
xxx = 000 indicates invalid measuring values.

yyy: The measuring values are invalid, if the value foryyy > 127.

If custom functions are programmed, valid data will occur as soon as the
measurement is stable (see D(213J) and remain unchanged unless the
measurement becomes unstable or a printout is made.

If problems occur during data transfer, the external computer has to transmit
the following:

<001>
<127>
<127>
<127>

After this the whole data transfer procedure has to be repeated from the
beginning.

APPENDIX D: COOLING WATER FOR
MEASUREMENTS BELOW
10 °C

HINT:
At low measuring temperatures (10 °C or lower) additional water cooling is
recommended. A slow flow of cooling water assists the built-in solid state
thermostat.

1. Connect one cooling water nozzle on the rear of the DMA 48 (see Connecting the
chapter 6.2) to the water pipe using a hose. water pipe

2. Connect a second hose to the other cooling water nozzle and put the
other end of the hose Into the sink.

3. Turn on the cold water (less than 20 °C) at a flow rate of 0.3 -
0.5 I/minute.

NOTE:
Do not block the water outlet. A maximum pressure of 0.3 bar (5psi) must
not be exceeded.

A25IB01 63
APPENDIX E: SETTING THE STABILITY
CRITERION

HINTS:

• The "X" at the front of the DMA 48 will stop flashing, if the oscillation
period of the measuring cell is stable fora certain time. This time can
be selected in steps of 10 from 5 to 85 seconds by setting F350,

• F350 = 1 corresponds to a time of 5 seconds.

F350 = 2 corresponds to a time of 15 seconds.
F350 = 3 corresponds to a time of 25 seconds.

F350 = 7 corresponds to a time of 65 seconds.

F350 = 8 corresponds to a time of 75 seconds.
F350 = 9 corresponds to a time of 85 seconds.

• The preset stability criterion is F350 = 4, corresponding to 35

seconds. Decreasing the value forF35O will give quicker results but
may increase the uncertainty of measurement.

• For suspension or colloid-type samples the stability criterion may

need to be decreased to e.g. F350 = 2 in order to reach stability.

Setting the Example for setting the stability criterion to 2:
