Equestrian
paintings
Equestrian and hunting
paintings reached mainstream
popularity in 19th-century
England, but horses and their
riders have added proper flair
to gallery walls for hundreds
of years. From formal jockey
portraits to action-filled
depictions of traditional
fox-hunting excursions, the
category boasts options
for casual horse lovers and
experts alike. Large oil
paintings with original ornate
frames garner much higher
values, while smaller, more
primitive frames make for
more affordable finds.

COTTAGE
BY THE SEA
Inspired by their love of all things nautical,
a pair of West Coast shop owners
decked out their Montauk, New York, getaway
with a slew of salty finds.
Treasure Detector
There’s an app called
Yard Sale Treasure Map.
It tells you where all
the sales are that weekend.
W
hen photographer Matt Albiani and real estate agent
Ron Brand opened their Montecito, California, vintage
shop Mate Gallery (mategallery.com) seven years
ago, they turned a 160-square-foot slice of Southern
California into a paean to New England nostalgia.
The tiny store teems with timeworn nods to the nautical, from oil
paintings of sea scenes and brass whale paperweights to anchor
andirons and lighthouse salt-and-pepper shakers. “Our style is very
much rustic New England maritime,” says Matt, a native of Boston.
Last year, the partners took their brine-soaked aesthetic to
a whole new level when they purchased a 1940s seaside cottage in
Montauk, New York, and christened it “Sea Roost.” “Ron and I have
been renting a neighboring property for the last seven years and
heard through the grapevine that the owner was interested in selling
the house,” says Matt. “He liked the idea of giving it to us because
he knew we weren’t going to tear it down, that we would preserve
it.” Perched on a knoll overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the half-acre
property includes a 300-square-foot artist’s studio and a 1,000-
square-foot main house that’s one of the last few original fisherman
cottages in the town’s Hither Hills area. “We loved the idea of
bringing Mate Gallery into the house,” says Matt. “Our store is very
small, and it’s chock-full of stuff, so it was nice to be able to
bring items into real life and give them some room to breathe.”

Vintage boards come in
a variety of shapes

handles designed for
boulangeries (French

24-inch-long models
specific to baguettes.
Depending on size and

can be found in
the $50 to $300 range.

Normandy cookware
maker Mauviel began
manufacturing pots and

While the family-owned

The French began

Many of the original
ceramic manufacturers
remain in business today,
including Emile Henry
(owned by the same

(crafter of cookware for
252 years), and Pillivuyt
(maker of porcelain
pieces since 1818).
Chip-free vintage vessels
remain usable; plain

can be had for as little

CREPE PANS
The crepe made its
debut in Brittany, France,
in the 13th century
via a cast-iron plate set
atop an open fire.
Later, shallow sides were
added to the flat pan,
which helped keep the
crepe round when the
batter was spread and
made flipping easier.
These days, stay on the
lookout for vintage
versions in blue carbon
steel—the lightweight
material gets hot
faster than cast iron—
from makers such as

for $30 to $100.
