Pre-Production
Our idea was to show to our audience and show the meaning behind reversing stereotypes
so if the stereotype was reversed would it be different or would it be the same dependent
on your race, age, and ethnicity? Our film is to question our audience to see if they would
still give the same reaction if the stereotype was aimed at another person.
The genre of the film is an action/comedy but there is more action than comedy in it due to
the fact that we are portraying stereotypes, we don’t want it to be intentionally funny as
majority of stereotypes aren’t nice.
We have met the conventions of our genre and subgenre by including action scenes to fit
the genre of my film so that in my film, the audience can identify its main genre. The sub-
genre of my film is comedy so to make it a comedy film, you need to grab the attention of
the audience, so this happens why ensuring that there is humour in the film.
The mise en scene of costume that the characters were in was to show to the audience that
our genre if the film was action. The fact that our characters were dressed in joggers and
baggy clothing sums up trouble. The editing techniques of montage and cross cutting show
that the film is going to be at a good standard. We used montage and cross cutting in the
film throughout the film and our editor used these techniques in our film to make it look
more interesting. For our logo, the image of a phone was an important part of story because
in the phone is the object that got stolen in our film. Using these techniques create an effect
and meaning of what the storyline of the film is about.
The tasks that we undertook during pre-production were that we followed a production
schedule to complete the film as much as we could of; we completed several pre-production
documents that are on my website and in a folder. These documents included production
schedule, risk assessments, equipment list and lots of other documents. We also had to
ensure that we were organised at all times in order to create the film and be successful in
the filming part. Having deadlines helped because it gave us a time frame hat we had to
work to so that we could complete all aspects of the film and the fact that the deadlines
were staggered was helpful to our group. Because we had deadlines we decided that weekly
we would have meetings so that as a group we all know where we stood.
Storyboard – storyboard is important in pre-production because it gives you
guidance on your step to step plan when filming footage for the film. Storyboard is
essentially a comic book of your production. It covers all the major shots, angles and
action involved in the script. This also makes it easier when coming to film the scenes
because you know what shot angles and shots that you need to create the film.
When we were filming we took the storyboard with us so that we had a guideline to
follow and that all of us as a group were on the same page and knew what shots
were next.
Location Recce – location Reece is where there are camera shots of where each
scene will be filmed with a description on the side of the picture of what this scene
is, why we have chosen this certain location for the film and how useful this location
is for the film. The location could also have a meaning behind it to show a certain
story in the scene. When we were filming the camera shots we filmed in the school
and around the school because where our film was an action film, we had to find
places where we could build up tension and suspense.
Risk Assessment – risk assessments are important to have planned because you
have to undertake risks in the place that you are filming. If this assessment hasn’t
been done before shooting scenes, then you could get in serious trouble or even if
you have missed certain risks that you haven’t listed. For the risk assessment you
have to list the hazard, then the level of risk and then how you will control the risk or
prevent it.
Equipment List – equipment list has to be created so that you know what equipment
you need in order to shoot the film and make it become one. The equipment list has
a picture and then a description of hat equipment it is and what it will be used for
during production. Equipment list is important for pre-production because before
shooting you know what equipment you should have for each part that you film for.
Production Schedule – a production schedule is created to show when we are having
meeting with the clients about the film and what next steps need to be taken. These
meetings happen regularly in order to ensure that the film is improving and getting
better to finishing and perfection. If a production schedule is not created then
people would not have roles or know what they are doing. We met deadlines, and
weren’t able to meet final deadline cause we were in quarantine so therefore we
couldn’t meet to complete our filming.
Proposal – we pitched our idea to the client so that they would pick our film to use
out of all the other entries, the proposal help to tell the journey of our story. The
proposal includes everything that a client would need to know.
Script – we came up with a script as a group and we had a meeting before to arrange
what would be in the script. We had one redraft as we felt as we needed to improve
it massively. We gave a copy to the cast to learn and we took it with us to film in
case they forgot the lines
Production
The production of the film went well however due to the coronavirus situation, it set us
back a lot. We were unable to carry on with the production of our film because we were no
longer unable to attend school to continue filming.
The new skills I learnt were to be organised, work with others and listen to people who you
are working with. I also learnt how to part edit footage that we filmed.
The most challenging part of the film was when we had to get all the different shots to flow
into each other to create a film that goes to one scene to the next. This is because when we
had filmed our planning for doing different scenes wasn’t very organised so all of our filming
shots were everywhere so this was very challenging for us to make all the shots flow one
after another.
My film does not consistently demonstrate the genre conventions of our film due to the fact
that we decided if we continuously kept on giving away the genre of the film, then people
won’t be eager to watch the whole film, we agreed that we wanted to keep the audience
guessing to give them the urge to watch it all. People would argue that this is convential
because it keeps the audience guessing for example in taken, we don’t know if she’s alive so
it’s something that we wanted to portray.
If I could change any elements of my film it would be that my group had overall come up
with a better film idea, an idea that would intrigue a large audience. This is because I feel as
if like our film isn’t as exciting as some of the fellow students in my class. Another element I
would consider changing is maybe the genre just to make the film abit more recognisable
and intriguing.
I feel as if the production process was good, but some things could of gone differently like
handing out different tasks for people in my group, production was good but we wanted to
organise this better. I also feel as if we communicated better, then we would have been
more successful however with the coronavirus situation, this set us back a lot! The pre-
production did however become useful because it gave us some sort of leadership on what
we wanted to achieve each week when producing our film.
The next steps after filming was to ensure that all footage was in the film and in the correct
order of different scenes and that the camera angles and shots were perfect so that we can
get a good and high grade. The next steps after filming was to organise all our planning
documents and ensure that they were at the best standard that they could be at aswell as a
high standard that the film was almost at perfection and completed.
The software we used to edit our footage for the film was premiere pro. Premiere pro is
software we used to edit the footage that we filmed to create the film. This software helped
us to ensure that the film flowed well and that the scene that we put in an order of our
choice so that the film would make sense.
We used cross cutting, montage, transitions in order to add some tension to our film. Using
these different techniques makes the film more interesting. Making the film more
interesting attracts a wider audience and makes your film better.
Analysis of Production
The challenges regarding the production were that we had disagreements within the group
from time to time about who was doing what and what people were meant to be doing.
Another challenge has been that with this coronavirus situation, we were unable to
complete our film which left us with lots of spaces in our film so therefore it does not all
come together so we had to get rid of some footage so that it flowed as a film.
The processes that went well were that our planning documents were mostly done before
deadline although we are missing a few bits of work; we completed the documents that
were most needed. Another process that went well was that we were organised as a group
where and when we filmed and that the shots were on point and footage was clear.
I think that the most successful element of my short film is the actual filing that we got done
it self but due to the coronavirus we were unable to finish creating the film. This was the
most successful element because the shots were brilliant, we filmed in different locations
which helped set the scenes perfectly, everyone in my group was also involved in the filming
and we worked well as a team.
