EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

SHO (O.S.)
I have no more money.
NO TENGO DINERO

SHO
I will not pay you.
NO TE VOY A DAR DINERO
I will not pay you.
NO TE VOY A PAGAR
I will not pay you.
NO TE VOY A PAGAR

KAI
You entered into a business
agreement with us, Mr. Phong.
TIENES UN TRATO CON NOSOTROS SEÑOR
PHNOG
You are well protected, sir.
TIENEN NUESTRA PROTECCIÓN, SEÑOR.
But don't abuse our trust.
PERO NO ABUSEN DE NUESTRA
CONFIANZA
I'm trying to help you.
TRATO DE AYUDARLES
These tardy payments appear
churlish to my superior.
ESOS RETRASOS EN SUS PAGOS SON UNA
BURLA PARA MI JEFE

SHO
You bled me dry, all of us.
ME HAN QUITADO TODO, A TODOS

KAI
This is the United States of
America, sir.
ESTOS SON LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE
AMERICA, SEÑOR
We settle our debts in a timely
fashion, because that is simply
good business.
PAGAMOS NUESTRAS DEUDAS
OPORTUNAMENTE, …ES TAN SOLO UN
BUEN NEGOCIO

MARILYN
I'd call it extortion, Mr. Kai.
YO LE LLAMARÍA EXTORSIÓN, SEÑOR
KAI

KAI
A little early for interference
from the Mayor's office, don't you
think?
UN POCO TEMPRANO PARA LA
INTERVENCIÓN DE LA OFICINA DEL
ALCALDE, NO CREES?

MARILYN
What time would suit you better,
sir?
A QUÉ HORA LES CONVENDRÍA MEJOR,
SEÑOR?
KAI
This is a private matter.
ES UN ASUNTO PRIVADO

MARILYN
There's nothing private
NO HAY NADA PRIVADO
about anything in Chinatown.
SOBRE ALGO EN CHINATOWN

These people are family,

ESTA GENTE SON FAMILIA
they share.
COMPARTEN TODO
You hurt one member you insult
them all.
LE HACES DAÑO A UNO DE ELLOS.. LOS
INSULTAS A TODOS

KAI
How would you know?
COMO LO SABES?

MARILYN
I make it my business to know.
ME ENCARGO DE SABERLO

You look at this man! He's

given you everything he can give!
MIRA A ESTE HOMBRE! EL TE HA DADO
TODO LO QUE PUEDE.
3.

KAI
He still has his life.
AÚN SIGUE VIVO

SHO
Aaah!

MARILYN
You let go of me.
DEJAME!
You take your hands off me.
QUITA TUS MANOS DE ENCIMA

KAI
This is a straight-edge razor.
ESTO ES UNA CUCHILLA DE AFEITAR
Barbers really prefer it.
LOS BARBEROS EN VERDAD LA
PREFIEREN

And a man's face can be peeled

away
Y PUEDE CORTAR EL ROSTRO DE UN
HOMBRE.
just like an orange.
COMO UNA NARANJA

CAINE
Please
POR FAVOR.
He will not harm you.
NO TE HARÁ DAÑO
To achieve victory,
PARA LOGRAR LA VICTORIA
one must get inside the skin of
his opponent.
HAY QUE ESTAR EN LA PIEL DE SU
OPONENTE

WONG
Where'd you get that?
DE DONDE SACAS ESO?
Out of a fortune cookie?
DE UNA GALLETITA DE LA FORTUNA?

CAINE
Are you all right?
ESTÁS BIEN?

SHO
Yes.
SI
KAI
Look out, Jack. We got Bruce Lee
here...
MIRA JACK… TENEMOS A BRUCE LEE
AQUI

WONG
I like the sandals...
LINDAS SANDALIAS…
and the flute.
Y LA FLAUTA
What monastary do you fall out
of?
DE QUE MONASTERIO VIENES?

CAINE
When you can learn to understand
your own motives,
CUANDO APRENDES A ENTENDER TUS
PROPIOS INTERESES,
and the motives of your enemy...
Y LOS INTERESES DE TU RIVAL
then you cannot help but win.
ES INEVITABLE QUE GANES
You do not understand this man.
TU NO ENTIENDES A ESTE HOMBRE
So, you will lose.
ASI QUE PERDERÁS

WONG
Come on, man,
VAMOS,
let's get out of here.
VAMONOS DE AQUI

EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

CAINE
You are sure you are all right?
SEGURO QUE ESTÁS BIEN?
5.

SHO
I'm okay.
ESTOY BIEN

EXT. ALLEYWAY

MARILYN
You're hurt.
ESTAS HERIDO

CAINE
It is nothing.
NO ES NADA
SHO
Come with me.
VEN CONMIGO

MARILYN
Ugh!

SHO
Ugh!

INT. LINCOLN

KAI
I need more men in Chinatown.
NECESITO MAS HOMBRES EN CHINATOWN
Put me through to Tan...
PÁSAME A TAN

EXT. MARKET AREA

MARILYN
You don't know what you've done!
NO SABES LO QUE HAS HECHO

SHO
The man saved my life...
EL HOMBRE SALVÓ MI VIDA

MARILYN
So now he's a hero!
ASI QUE ES UN HERORE
Who'll be the first one from the
streets to emulate him?
QUIEN SERÁ EL PRIMERO DE LA CALLE
EN SEGUIRLO
David Chang, from the florist?
DAVID CHANG, DE LA FLORISTERIA

When they come for his cut?

CUANNDO VENGAN POR EL
Old Soon Tak from the bakery
EL ANCIANO SOON TAK DE LA
PANADERÍA
or Hop Sung at the restaurant?
O HOP SUNG AL RESTAURANTE?
Who's gonna be the first one
from the street to get killed?
QUIEN VA A SER EL PRIMERO DE LA
CALLE QUE MATEN?

CAINE
I am no hero.
SO SOY UN HEROE
I had to act. There was no
choice.
TENÍA QUE ACTUAR, NO HABÍA
ELECCIÓN
If your enemy is weak, you must
make him strong.
SI TU RIVAL ES DEBIL HACERLO
FUERTE
To destroy that enemy, you must
first glorify his power.
PARA DESTRUIR A ESE RIVAL, DEBES
PRIMERO EXALTAR SU PODER
You will have to act next time.
TENDRÁS QUE ACTUAR LA PROXIMA VEZ
7.

MARILYN
No! There can't be a next time!
NO! NO PUEDE HABER UNA PROXIMA
VEZ
Now, we have got to let the
police do their job.
AHORA DEJEMOS QUE LA POLOCIA HAGA
SU TRABAJO
We are cracking down on these
hoodlums.
ESTAMOS TOMANDO MEDIDAS FUERTES
CONTRA ESOS MATONES

SHO
They are beyond your power.
ELLOS VAN MAS ALLA DE TU PODER
MARILYN
Don't romanticize them into some
mystic force.
NO LOS TRATES COMO UNA FUERZA
MISTICA

They can be dealt with.

PODEMOS ENFRENTARLOS
They're gonna be looking for
you.
TE ESTARÁN BUSCANDO
It'll be very dangerous for you to
stay in Chinatown.
SERA PELIGROSO QUE TE QUEDES EN
CHINATWON

CAINE
Your concern does you honor.
TU PREOCUPACION ME HONRA
But, I am merely passing through.
PERO TAN SOLO VOY DE PASO

MARILYN
On your way to...?
DE CAMINO HACIA?

CAINE
Nowhere in particular.
NINGUNO EN PARTICULAR
MARILYN
Everyone has a destination.
CADA UNO TIENE UN DESTINO

CAINE
A destiny, yes. Not necessarily a
destination.
UN DESTINO, SI. NO NECESARIAMENTE
UN RUMBO

SHO
These men are sent by an evil
force.
ESOS HOMBRES SON ENVIADOS POR UNA
FUERZA MALVADA
A man of shadow and stealth who
manipulates the lives of others.
UNA SOBRA OCULTA QUE MANIPULA LA
VIDA DE OTROS
He is now a hoodlum.
AHORA ES UN ASESINO

CAINE
Be well and happy, my friend.
QUE ESTÉS BIEN Y SEAS FELIZ, AMIGO
And I will be in debt to you.
There will be no forfeit between
us.

INT. TEMPLE

YOUNG PETER
How long must I study to be like
you, father?

CAINE
At least ten years.
11.

YOUNG PETER
What if I studied twice as hard as
all your other students?

CAINE
Twenty years.

YOUNG PETER
What if I practice day and night?
No television, no schooling, it's
boring anyway, just Shaolin
principles? How long?

CAINE
Thirty years.

YOUNG PETER
Hey! This doesn't compute, Pop.

CAINE
Don't ever call me that.

YOUNG PETER
But why when I work harder does
the study time get longer?

CAINE
When one eye is fixed on the
destination, you have only one eye
to search for the way.
Concentrate on the now.

YOUNG PETER
But I want to fight!

CAINE
Yes. So did your
great-grandfather when he was your
age. But Master Po convinced the
Grasshopper the wisdom of
stillness and unconscious thought.
The trick is, never to fight
unless there is no other
alternative.

YOUNG PETER
Grasshopper?

YOUNG CAINE
Do you hear the grasshopper at
your feet?
MASTER PO
Close your eyes. What do you
hear?
13.

YOUNG CAINE
I hear the water. I hear the
birds.

MASTER PO
Do you hear the grasshopper which
is at your feet?

INT. TEMPLE

YOUNG PETER
There is no grasshopper at my
feet.

CAINE
There will be.

EXT. "AGRIPPA" CLUB

DOORMAN
Hold on a second. Uh, okay,
you're in.

INT. "AGRIPPA" CLUB

PETER
Police. You're under arrest.

PATRON
Yeah. Yeah. Good to see you,
Peter.
15.

WOMAN #1
Hi, Peter.

PETER
Yeah, I'll call you. I swear.

WAITRESS #1
Here you are, Tyler.

TYLER
Thanks.

PETER
Hey. Hey. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hey, let's try that again. When
you see me you say: "Where've you
been? I've missed you! Sit down,
let's have a drink, let's take a
walk, let's go to bed, but let's
do it together."

TYLER
Hello, Peter...

PETER
That's good. I'll buy that. Can
I buy you a drink?

TYLER
I've gotta do my set now.

PETER
Hey. You gotta sing. You gotta
dance, right? You know, I wanted
to be a dancer once.

TYLER
No, all you ever wanted to be was
a cop.

PETER
Not so true. When I was kid I was
searching for spiritual
enlightenment.

TYLER
Now you just look for junkies and
drug dealers who are looking for a
functional high.

PETER
Could we try to talk like two
people who once couldn't keep
their hands off each other? You
know, like, some, some deep place
in your soul there's a locket with
my picture in it?
17.

TYLER
You mean the tarnished one? You
know, for a streetwise kid you use
some pretty fancy imagery.

PETER
Hold-over from my misspent youth.
When I was a kid, I was given
ideals like other kids were given
ice cream. Until I grew up and
found out that they were always
empty as "gentleness overcomes
strength." A bigger baseball bat
overcomes a smaller baseball bat.

TYLER
When did you get so cynical?

PETER
When I learned the truth about
Milli Vanilli. Can we sit down?
People are starting to star.
Someone's gonna think you find my
company repulsive.

TYLER
Stop being so damned attractive.

PETER
I've tried. It seems to come with
my personality. Why aren't you
wearing your engagement ring?

TYLER
When we broke up I threw it into
the river.

PETER
You did not.

TYLER
No, but you don't know that.
Look, Peter, why can't you just
live your life and let me live
mine?

PETER
Because for a long time I thought
that those two lives might share
the same bathroom.
18.

TYLER
You're careless, reckless,
cavalier... And I don't feel like
sitting at home waiting to hear
that someone who means more to me
than anything in the world has
been killed in some police
shootout.

PETER
Weren't you supposed to use the
past tense there?

TYLER
Oh, dammit, you are so irritating!

PETER
Now you've hit upon my best
quality...

TYLER
Look, you are not gonna to
sweet-talk me into anything
tonight. I have an audition for
Les Mis in the morning, and I will
not have you on my mind! Hello.
Earth to Peter. It's your turn to
be witty and ingratiating and ask
me to sit back down.

PETER
You should do your set now. I
can't get you fired. Why don't
you sing "My Heart And My Soul," I
love that one. Hey, guys, guys,
"My Heart And My Soul."

TYLER
Ready for this one?
(sings)
"My heart and my soul. My whole
imagination. Beggin' today's new
sensation. My heart and my soul
is old and new temptations,
tearing away... My heart and my
soul..."

PETER
Everybody down! Get down! Now!
Now! Stay still! Get down!

TYLER
Oh, my God! What's he doing?

PETER
This is a robbery!
20.

ROBBER
We're robbing the club...

MAN #1 (O.S.)
Tyler, come on.

PETER
Well, you're too late. Why don't
you find your own place to rob.
I'm robbing this place.

ROBBER
Hey, man, we'll rob the place
together.

PETER
Do I look like I need help? Why
don't you guys rob the "Gorky
Park" club around the corner. I
hear it's a hot spot.

ROBBER
Listen, man, we were here before
you even came in and...

PETER
How do I know you're really here
to rob the place?

ROBBER
No. No, we were gonna rob it.
Honest. Look, we got guns...

PETER
How do I know that doesn't say
"Roy Rogers" on the side of it?

ROBBER #2
(gets shot)
Ugh! Aaaaaah!

PETER
I'm a cop. Everything's under
control. Backup's on the way.
Everyone take it easy.

PETER
How about a martini... with just a
breath of vermouth?

BARTENDER
You got it.
21.

TYLER
You wanna know why we're not
together any longer? That's why
not! That insane stunt you just
pulled!

PETER
I saved the day, didn't I? Or the
night.

TYLER
That's beside the point. You
scared the hell out of me and out
of everyone else. You're crazy.
I love you, but you're really
crazy. You know that. I'm crazy
for ever having thought you
weren't crazy.

PETER
Tough being a hero these days...

INT. HOUSE

ANCIENT
You are safe.

CAINE
Where is this place?

ANCIENT
A humble dwelling above the meat
market.

CAINE
You are the apothecary.

ANCIENT
I am called the Ancient, because I
am the voice of reason for the
community. It's doctor, it's
Father Confessor, it's whisper of
conscience. And, uh, I'm also
very, very old.

CAINE
And a priest.

ANCIENT
Like you.

CAINE
Have we not known each other
before?
23.

ANCIENT
Oh, yes. Many times.

CAINE
But we have never met?

ANCIENT
A spirit lives in many disguises.
There was a temple many, many
years ago. You were a temple. A
place of light and song.

CAINE
All was destroyed.

ANCIENT
But you survived.

INT. TEMPLE

TAN
Open your eyes, Kwai Chang Caine.
Look at those men fighting out
there! We're training
mercenaries.

CAINE
That would be a violation of every
principle we hold to be true.

TAN
Is it? Your grandfather preached
the Shaolin philosophies, yet he
murdered the Emperor's nephew on
the steps to the city.

CAINE
His Master was senselessly killed.

TAN
Exactly. One violent death
justifies another. If you intend
to oppose me, do what your
grandfather would have done.
Oppose me now!

CAINE
You will leave this temple and you
will never return.
24.

TAN
This temple is finished. You are
finished. When you enter my
circle again, Kwai Chang Caine, I
will sever your manhood from your
body and your soul from its
eternal peace.

INT. ROOM

TAN
Describe again this man whom none
of you seem able to contain.

KAI
He came out of nowhere. I'd never
seen him before in the community.
Dressed like some Chinese peasant
out of "The Last Emperor." Very
strong.

CHAN
An undercover cop? F.B.I.?

KAI
No. Something about him. A
mystic quality.

WONG
Yeah. Very mystic the way he
kicked you teeth in. He guy got
lucky.

TAN
And with the others? He got lucky
with them, too?

WONG
There was blood all over the
alleyway. He probably crawled to
some corner to die. If he didn't,
he's long gone.

TAN
Make certain. If he's still in
Chinatown, I want him found and
brought to me.

CHAN
He is only one man.
25.

TAN
(yells)
The source of all life is a
profound mystery. It is devoid of
substance and form. It has lived
since the dawn of existence. It
has a body... and it has a name.
Bring me that body and bring me
that name.

EXT. MORGUE BUILDING

BLAISDELL
That was some stunt you pulled
last night at the Agrippa Club.

PETER
Yeah, that's what Tyler said.
Think it'll make the news?

BLAISDELL
I know you're tough. And I
wouldn't wanna go up against you
myself.

PETER
Who would?

BLAISDELL
Look, if one of my officers gets
shot, it means I haven't done my
job. I didn't give him the backup
he needed. Now, you could make me
look very bad if you walk into the
next diehard situation with guns
blazing. And besides that, Annie
will never speak to me again, so
you're gonna take care or I'm
gonna pull you out of Metro, and
I'm gonna put you back on the
streets with no place to go for a
home-cooked meal, right?

PETER
Well, it seemed like the thing to
do at the time.

BLAISDELL
Well, it probably was.

PETER
Hey. I must say I like the idea
you trying to scare me into
submission by giving me this
lecture in front of the morgue.
27.

BLAISDELL
It was the best place I could
think of.

INT. MORGUE ROOM

BLAISDELL
We fished one of Tan's men out of
the river this morning. Word on
the street is that Tan had him
executed for dealing drugs without
sharing.

PETER
Well, good help's hard to find.

BLAISDELL
You make him?

PETER
Yeah. It's Jimmie Ho, one of
Tan's shooters. He was almost as
good as me. You know, this might
be the break we've been looking
for.

BLAISDELL
What are you talking about?

PETER
Well, we need a man undercover in
Chinatown. I speak Chinese. I
know the culture, I can shoot the
eye out of a sparrow. Could I
have that job?

BLAISDELL
Out of the question...

PETER
Why? Why, because I'm family?
Come on. I'm not. I mean, I am,
but I'm not. Look, I'm a good cop
with the right qualifications for
the job.

BLAISDELL
No, it's too dangerous...

PETER
Give me a shot at this, Captain.
Don't play favorites. Somebody's
gota get close to Tan and prove
he's flesh and blood and can be
taken down. I want the chance.
29.

BLAISDELL
Why? Why is this so important to
you? The screwing with your
Chinese heritage?

PETER
Oh, give me a break. My mother
looked like Rhonda Fleming.

BLAISDELL
Uh-huh. And your father?

PETER
His looks were enigmatic... from
what I can remember. Look, Tan's
a criminal. This is police
business.

BLAISDELL
No. No, this is family.

INT. BLAISDELL'S OFFICE

PETER
You wanted to see me?

BLAISDELL
Here. You're Peter McCabe. I.D.,
driver's license, credit cards,
wife and three kids. Chicago
background, you've made some very
big hits. You're the best.

PETER
My sentiments exactly.

BLAISDELL
Look. Do me a favor, will ya? Be
careful, all right? Just, just
humor me.

PETER
Hey, caution's my motto. Where do
I hang out?

BLAISDELL
Shot Glass Bar on Fife Street.
Drinks are watered down Bushmill,
the dancers don't wear a lot, the
talk is cheap and plentiful. You
shoot some pool, shoot your mouth
off and see who listens.
PETER
The two things I do best.

BLAISDELL
And shoot straight...
31.

INT. CHINESE RESTAURANT

ZHAO
If Tan walked in here now, the
people in this room would tear him
to pieces.

PATRONS (O.S.)
Yeah.

ZHAO
Just one street uniting will send
a message to these bastards! We
are not going to pay protection
any longer.

MARILYN
You are not vigilantes. People,
listen to me. You cannot take the
law into your hands.

OLD WOMAN
What happened to your police
protection?

HOP SUNG
What is our Mayor doing?

PATRONS (O.S.)
Nothing. / Nothing.

SHO
One pays. All pay. No one pays.
What can they do?

CHAN
No one pays. All suffer.

MARILYN
This is a community meeting.
You're not invited. You're not
welcome here.

CHAN
We're welcome wherever we go. We
protect your streets. We keep the
scum out of them.

XIAOLI
What about the scum that's already
here?
32.

CHAN
Angry words, stirred emotions, mob
rule. It's all very ugly. You
must each of you, think of
yourselves. Your families. Your
loved ones. Lenin said: "A
million people perish, that's a
statistic. One man's death,
that's a tragedy." It's rather
unpopular to quote Lenin these
days, but... A boyhood hero...

XIAOLI
Don't touch me! You get your
hands off of me, you bastards!
Let me go! Let me go!

SHO
Wait! Stop them!

XIAOLI (O.S.)
Where are you taking me?

EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

XIAOLI
Let me go! Stop that! Let me go!

PETER
You know, you should tell Tan this
strong-arm stuff's a little
old-fashioned. "Miami Vice" has
been off the air for seasons.

CHAN
His favorite show.

XIAOLI
Where are you taking me! Let go!

CHAN
You know, you don't fit this
description of this mystic
champion we've been hearing about.

PETER
Name's Peter McCabe. I'd like to
meet your boss. I understand he's
looking for a shooter.

CHAN
Make an appointment.
33.

PETER
Hey, why don't you let the girl
go. You've made your point. God,
I hate it when that happens.

CHAN
Oh! Huh? Let her go.

XIAOLI
Get your hands off me.

CHAN
Guys, put the gun away. Let's go.

INT. TAN'S OFFICE

CHAN
We broke up the meeting. Some
young fellow didn't like our
style. When I tried to take one
of the community, he did this!
From fifty feet away. I thought
he'd shot me in the back.

TAN
A marksman's shot.

CHAN
That's what he says. He wants to
meet you. By the way, there was
no sign of any mystic warrior
coming to anyone's rescue. Jack
and Raymond must've run into some
cat whacked on coke who was
flying. But they're edgy down
there.

TAN
Make an example of the Apothecary,
and the rest of the street will
fall into line.

INT ANCIENT'S APARTMENT

ANCIENT
You know a great deal about my
work. That will draw out the
poison without contaminating the
blood.

CAINE
You were resting. I had hoped you
would not mind.

ANCIENT
I only mind that you are leaving.
35.

CAINE
I must move on.

ANCIENT
To where? Have you been isolated
so long that you cannot fight for
a cause that is just? Your
grandfather would not move on. He
would stay and help these people.

CAINE
That was another time... another
place. I am to my ancestor, as
shadow is to form. As echo is to
sound. I am not yet whole. You
did not know him.

ANCIENT
Perhaps.

INT. BAR

PATRON
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Ooooh, yeah.
Yeah.

KAI
Mr. Tan would like to see you.

PETER
I thought I needed to make an
appointment?

KAI
I believe you made one. Mr. Chan
needs a new pair of shoes.

PETER
Oh! Well, easy come, easy go.
Catch you later, guys.

KAI
Our car is right outside.

PETER
Oh, I never get into a car with
strangers. I promised my mother.

INT. BROWNSTONE BUILDING

KAI
Jimmy, over here.
JIMMY
You got it.
37.

EXT. FRONT OF BROWNSTONE BUILDING

SHO
What, what can we say that will
make you stay?

CAINE
I am only one man.

XIAOLI
You're all we've got. A young man
saved my life this morning. Then
we found out he's now working for
Tan. This is what's happening to
the young men in this community.
Tan has money and power. It's
very seductive.

SHO
But not to a Shaolin priest.

INT. ANCIENT'S APARTMENT

ANCIENT
You must learn to respect your
elders. Ah!

CHAN
Lucky shot... Of course I respect
my elders.

EXT. STREET

CAINE
I am sorry, but I must leave.

MAN #1 (O.S.)
Aaaah!

INT. TEMPLE

CAINE
Ooooooh! No! No!

TAN
What you cannot possess, you must
destroy. You never learned that.
Discard formal wisdom and
knowledge, and the happiness of
people will increase a hundred
times. Discard kindness and
righteousness, and the love for
family will be restored. What do
you say to that, Kwai Chang Caine?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
39.

CAINE
Peter! Ah!

MAN #2
Help me! Help me get him out!
Help me! Help me!

EXT. TEMPLE

MEN
Aaaah!

CAINE
Oh, no.

EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

VOICES
Back up! / He's on the roof.

BLAISDELL
What does it look like, Chief?

FIRE CHIEF
Too early to tell yet.

VOICE #1 (O.S.)
The other side. Somebody help me.
Get on the roof. Hey, someboey
help! Come on, we gotta hurry.
This whole place is going up.
Look...

VOICE #2 (O.S.)
Comin' through. Comin' through.
Sergeant, I need am ambulance.

PARAMEDIC #1
Put him in here.

PARAMEDIC #2

Can you hear me? Are you okay?

PETER
Shaolin priest...

KAI
Mr. Tan doesn't like to be kept
waiting. This is nothing. An old
building burns. An old man dies.
It's life in the streets.
PETER
There is no grace in victory. The
one who glorifies it, must revel
in bloodshed.
41.

KAI
Where'd you hear that?

PETER
Charlie Chan movie. Let's get out
of here.

FIREMEN #1
Man down!

COP #1
All right, everybody stand back.
Everybody step back here.

FIREMAN #1
You're gonna be all right.

EXT. TAN'S OFFICE

TAN
I love this city. I love it when
the fireworks light up the sky.
Did you know it was Chinese New
Year?

CHAN
No, I didn't

TAN
Anything exciting happen in
Chinatown tonight?

CHAN
The stranger Jack and Kai were
talking about, carried the Ancient
out of the burning building.

TAN
I take it that you are Peter
McCabe? Give your wallet to Chan.
He will make some phone calls. It
will then be returned to you.
Check the hospital. So, Mr.
McCabe, you're looking for a job.

PETER
Nothing permanent.

TAN
Of course. A shadow touched by
light must disappear.
PETER
Let's just say I don't stay in one
place for too long.
43.

TAN
I understand you're a good shot.

PETER
Yeah. Passable.

TAN
Huh? We'll find out.

INT. MAYOR'S OFFICE COMPLEX

REPORTER #1
Hey, over here!

MARILYN
Ladies and gentlemen of the press,
you know the routine. The Mayor
will be making a full statement
for you after his briefing with
the police commissioner.

REPORTER #2
Miss Blake, h-how long have you
known about this?

MAYOR
The fire bombing of the building
in Chinatown is a disgrace. I am
not prepared to let these animals
take control of the streets. This
is a declaration of war, and I am
making it purposefully and
directly to the people
responsible.

MARILYN
All right. If you could all wait
until after the conference, the
Mayor will be more than happy...

MAYOR
I intend to make a speech to the
people of the Chinatown community
right outside this burnt-out
building. Noon tomorrow. Be
there. Get me Captain Blaisdell
at the hundred and first precinct.

REPORTERS
Mr. Mayor... / Mr. Mayor...

EXT. PRECINCT
STRENLICH
It's for you, Captain...
45.

BLAISDELL
Tell me...

STRENLICH
The Mayor, line three.

BLAISDELL
Oh, swell... Good morning, sir...

MAYOR
Meeting in my office at five
o'clock this afternoon, you, your
Chief of Detectives, the Police
Commissioner and the Deputy Mayor.

EXT. GRAVESITE ON SIDE OF HILL

PRIEST
Many Shaolin masters are buried in
this place. Your father among
them. The Heaven and Earth join,
and the sweet rain falls. Beyond
the command of men, yet evenly
upon all.

YOUNG PETER
Men kill and are killed. That's
the lesson you should've been
teaching us. I will find them,
Father. These soldiers of hate.
You told me in war, there is no
grace in victory and one who
revels in bloodshed is incapable
of ruling the world. But when I
find them, and kill them I will
delight in it. I swear this to
you, my father.

PRIEST
One day father and son will be
reunited. This I promise you.

EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

MARILYN
Such a terrible thing.

PETER
Yes, it was. He who reveres
slaughter will fail in his
ambition to rule the world.
MARILYN
I'm sorry?
47.

PETER
Nothing.

MARILYN
I'm Marilyn Blake. I'm from the
Mayor's office. I didn't get a
chance to thank you yesterday for
what you did for us.

PETER
Ah, it wasn't for you.

MARILYN
These people need someone to
believe in.

PETER
Well tell them to pay more money
than Tan, you'll have every young
man in the neighborhood delivering
groceries and ironing shirts.

MARILYN
Tan pays more in one day than
these people make in a year.

PETER
A lot more.

MARILYN
So you're working for him now?

INT. MAYOR'S INNER OFFICE

MAYOR
I have to give the people of that
community some answers!

THALER
Television is a wonderful
invention. Do it from your desk.

MAYOR
If I'm afraid to walk into
Chinatown, what kind of message
does that send them?

STRENLICH
We can provide you with adequate
protection. That's not the point.
This isn't the time to make a
grandstanding speech just so His
Honor can salvage what's left of
his campaign in an election year.
49.

FOSTER
If you think the Mayor is worried
about votes, Strenlich...

BLAISDELL
We've got a man on the inside.
He's already met with Tan. I'm
just waiting for him to report
back. Give him forty-eight hours.

MAYOR
A man on the inside? When did
this happen?

STRENLICH
On whose authority did you do
that, Paul?

BLAISDELL
On my own damned authority!

STRENLICH
And just who did you send in? Let
me guess! Peter Caine?

BLAISDELL
He was the best man for the job.

STRENLICH
He's crazy!

BLAISDELL
Well, maybe you have to be a
little crazy to wanna get that
close to Tan!

THALER
I'm sick of hearing that man's
name. He's like a phantom.

FOSTER
Flesh and blood. Like all of us.

MAYOR
And he'll take a fall. I'm going
to make a speech at noon tomorrow
in front of that burnt-out
building. My staff is putting out
the word now. It should be a full
house. Thank you, gentlemen.
50.

INT. MAYOR'S OFFICE COMPLEX

STRENLICH
Just how close to Tan is Caine?

BLAISDELL
On the inside track...

EXT. ANOTHER PART OF WEEPING WILLOW HILL

PRIEST
Four of the students perished in
the flames. Peter would have
survived, but he went back into
the temple. I could not save him.

CAINE
It was not your place to save him.

PRIEST
You must not reproach yourself.
There was nothing you could do.
Fire cleanses all.

CAINE
Your life is not your possession,
my son. It is a harmony that was
lent to you by the universe. In
the beginning, before Heaven and
Earth existed, there was only the
one thing, amorphous, silent,
isolated entity, which though
changes was constantly turning
perpetually in motion. That is
where you have returned to. Until
I have found it in myself, I
cannot join you there.

INT. CAINE'S HOSPITAL ROOM

PETER
I was, I was in that street last
night. I saw the tattoos on your
forearms. The dragon and the
tiger. Who else but a Shaolin
priest could walk out of a burning
building like he was taking a
stroll through Central Park?

CAINE
Must be very hot in Central Park.
51.

PETER
I thought you might know something
about my father. Could tell me
something about him. But I don't
have to do that now. Because the
only thing that's changed about
you in fifteen years is your eyes.

CAINE
Peter...

PETER
I can't find the words...

CAINE
They will come...

PETER
I could kill that old bastard!

CAINE
What old bastard?

PETER
Ping Hai! He took me to your
grave! I vowed vengeance against
the soldiers of evil that murdered
my father. I took that pain out
into the streets, into the
orphanage. Why did he do it?

CAINE
To protect us. He took me to your
grave. The renegade priest who
destroyed the temple had to
believe we were both dead. In
that way, Ping Hai sought to save
us from his vengeance.

PETER
I vowed to avenge your death. I
didn't. It ate away at me for 15
years.

CAINE
To be orphaned and lonely, and
unworthy is the worst thing a man
can think of.

PETER
"And yet princes and dukes are
exalted by such names." I don't
believe in that crap anymore. I
cleansed and purified my mystic
vision... until I could see the
real world and the crap in it.
53.

CAINE
You must learn to see more than
with... your eyes.

PETER
I guess we've got a lot of
reaching out to do.

CAINE
Yes. Yes.

PETER
But not tonight, Pop. Not
tonight.

CAINE
Don't ever call me that.

PETER
I just wanted to make sure I had
the right father.

INT. CORRIDOR

KAI
(speaks in Chinese)

CHAN
Cut it out! I can't understand a
word you're saying. You wanna
talk like that, go to Beijing,
huh? Hang out in Tiananmen Square.
You're in America now. Wait here.

KAI
(speaks in Chinese)

INT. TAN'S OFFICE

TAN
You check out okay. I have a job
for you. Tonight. A test. That
stranger who carried the old
apothecary from the building.
They're at Glenncross Hospital.

CHAN
Know how to use one of these?

PETER
That's how I make my living.
TAN
Kill them both. You accomplish
that, and the assassination
tomorrow is yours.
55.

PETER
No problem.

INT. GLENNCROSS HOSPITAL

OPERATOR
County General.

PETER (V.O.)
Six-fourteen.

OPERATOR
I'm sorry, there's no phone in
that room. I can put you through
to the nurses' station on the
sixth floor.

INT. CORVETTE

PETER
No messages? Oh, okay, fine.

INT. LEI SING'S FLORIST SHOP - INTERCUT AS NEEDED

LEI SING
Yes, may I help you?

PETER
(in Chinese)
A dozen roses to be sent to
Glenncross Hospital to the patient
in room six-fourteen.

LEI SING
(in English)
Okay. A dozen roses...

LEI SING (V.O.)

... to Glenncross Hospital.

LEI SING
Room six-fourteen. The name
please?

PETER
(in Chinese)
'Bye-bye.

LEI SING
Okay. The card should say... "Get
out of the room..."
CHAN
What the hell was that all about?
57.

PETER
What, no speakee Chinese?

CHAN
Aw, gimme me a break. I grew up
in New York City. The Bronx. We
heard some geek talk like that,
we'd beat his head in.

PETER
I was just sending flowers to my
girl friend. We had a little
spat.

CHAN
You worry about things like that
on the way to kill people?

PETER
Gotta know what's important,
Chan...

INT. BAR

KAI
You look pale. We'd better get
you to a hospital.

WONG
What are you talking about?

KAI
While we're there, we'll pay a
visit to our mysterious stranger.
Maybe we'll knock on the old
apothecary's door just for the fun
of it.

WONG
Why should we?

KAI
Because that stranger humiliated
us in front of other people. I
don't like that. It ruined my
day. Besides, it'll show Mr. Tan
that we have initiative as well as
good looks.

WONG
Sure, we'll kill them. No sweat.
KAI
Let's go. Now!
59.

INT. GLENNCROSS HOSPITAL

KAI
I'll take them in. The patient is
my brother.

P.A. SYSTEM (V.O.)

Dr. Allen, please call Dr.
Alphonse, extension five-one-oh.
Dr. Allen, please call Dr.
Alphonse, extension five-one-oh.

VOICE (V.O.)
Excuse me, what room is uh...

EXT. ROOF

CHAN
Second room from the left.

PETER
Good thing the blinds were left
open.

CHAN
We made sure they would be.

PETER
Well, well. Seems like we might
be a little late. You better
check it out, Chan. The room's
wrecked. Someody must've shown
him a bill for one day.

INT. GLENNCROSS HOSPITAL

CAINE
You must come with me... now.

INT. RUINS OF ANCIENT'S APARTMENT

PETER
I was hoping I'd find you here.

CAINE
I am trying to save as much as I
can of the apothecary's medicines.

PETER
Good idea. Risk your life for
some charred weeds and herbs.
Probably make a good tea out of
them.
61.

CAINE
They represent a work of a
lifetime.

PETER
I just wanted to make sure that
you were alright.

CAINE
I should not be. Two men came to
the hospital to kill the
apothecary and myself.

PETER
Well, they just didn't know who
they were dealing with, did they,
Kwai Chang Caine.

CAINE
A wiseman accomplishes his goals
without love of glory.

PETER
"Without love of violence."

CAINE
I am glad to see you remember some
of my useless sayings. You
mentioned something about an
orphanage.

PETER
Ping Hai became very sick. Maybe
carrying around all those lies.
He put me into an orphanage before
he died. Nifty place if you're
into discipline and loneliness.
Guy named Paul Blaisdell used to
come around and talk to the kids.
He was a cop. And he became...
well, like a...

CAINE
Father?

PETER
More like a Big Brother. He took
me out of that mausoleum and threw
me into the Police Academy. What,
what happened to the old
apothecary?

CAINE
I took him to Sho, the man who
runs the meat market. He will
take care of him. They all think
you are working for these killers.
But you are not. A cop?
63.

PETER
I grew up watching "The Rockford
Files" and "Hill Street Blues." I
wanted to be one of the good guys.
I also wanted you to be proud of
me. Though I believed that you'd
never really know about it. You
mind me asking where you've been
for the last fifteen years?

CAINE
Searching.

PETER
Oh, right, right. Right. For the
solution to the mystery of life.
Embracing the One with your soul.

CAINE
Looking for my son, or the essence
that was his being. Never did I
believe I would find him alive.
And a cop. You are working, uh,
undercover?

PETER
Is there any other way?

MARILYN
Calm down.

PETER
How long have you been outside?

MARILYN
I, I followed you into the
building. I didn't mean to
eavesdrop. I was just waiting for
the right moment to let you know I
was here. I just came from the
hospital. Your room was wrecked.
The old apothecary was gone. I
came to Chinatown to find Sho and
let him know what happened.
Forgive me. Ex-newspaper girl.
Old habits are hard to break.
You're a police officer! And
you're his father?

PETER
That's gonna be our little secret.
No one can know about this. Not
the Mayor. Not the community.
Not the police.
65.

MARILYN
No, no. Of course, not. That
goes without saying. Um... I'm
glad I was wrong about you. The
street wants to know your
intentions. Are you staying? At
least tell us where we can get in
touch with you.

CAINE
I will find you. After I have
found these assassins.

MARILYN
Be careful.

PETER
Father, this is police business.
The man behind these assassins is
powerful and corrupt.

EXT. STREET

CHAN
There he is.

INT. BURNT-OUT APARTMENT

PETER
This is not two old gunfighters
standing in the middle of some
dusty street like it might've been
back in the time of your
grandfather.

CAINE
He would never have let this
injustice happen. The old one
will be killeed if these people
are not stopped.

PETER
I'll stop them. Where are you
gonna stay tonight?

CAINE
I will find shelter.

PETER
Hey, this will all be over
tomorrow. You just give it a
couple of days. Oh, God, look.
Change of plans. Why don't you
stay...
67.

INT. TAN'S OFFICE

CHAN
She was coming out of the
burnt-out building. She's been
talking to everyone in the
community. She knows where the
stranger is. The old one too.

TAN
You've questioned her?

CHAN
No. I thought I'd leave that up
to you.

TAN
No! You can't find them yourself,
so you pick up a pretty bone to
throw at my feet. I want them
found! Tonight! Take off your
clothes...

MARILYN
That's for hiring a nihilistic
animal like Chan. If he ever
man-handles me again, I'll scratch
out those empty eyes.

TAN
Beware of him. He's ambitious and
powerful. But then again, that's
what turns you on, doesn't it?
Power.

MARILYN
I do have some information for
you. Peter McCabe? He's an
undercover cop. And your
mysterious stranger, Caine, is his
father.

TAN
What name did you say?

MARILYN
He called him Caine. Kwai Chang
Caine...

TAN
Have a seat.
68.

INT. TAN'S OFFICE

PETER
Look, Mr. Tan, about last night...

TAN
Mr. Kai and Mr. Wong decided to
take the law into their own hands.
The stranger humiliated them in
front of the entire street.
They've been dealt with.
Twenty-five thousand dollars and
your target. The final
seventy-five thousand when the man
is dead.

PETER
The Mayor?

TAN
Do you have a problem with that?

PETER
No. None at all. Where does the
hit take place.

TAN
Our Mayor is making a major
political speech at the burnt-out
building in Chinatown today at
noon. Using it as a symbol to
denounce the escalating violence
in the district. And not before
time.

PETER
Well, he's gonna be surrounded
with enough security to take out
an army.

TAN
That's why we're not gonna make
the hit there. When he returns to
City Hall, he'll be in one car
with Chief of Detectives,
Strenlich and the Deputy Mayor.
You will be on the roof opposite
City Hall. When the Mayor steps
out of the limo, you will kill
him.

PETER
How do I get out?
70.

TAN
You'll have men with you. They'll
have your escape route. When it's
done you return here.

PETER
I won't let you down.

TAN
I'm sure.

CHAN
Where will the real hit take
place?

TAN
At the burnt-out building in
Chinatown.

CHAN
Who's the shooter?

TAN
You're not gonna volunteer? Oh,
that's okay. A charming young
man. Mr. Sung. I've been
grooming him for some time. I
didn't think he was ready, but
he'll have to be. Don't let your
target get away.

INT. BLAISDELL'S OFFICE

BLAISDELL
Blaisdell... City Hall. All
right. Where will you be? Got
it. Look, the Mayor's speech will
last ten minutes. That'll put him
back at City Hall at
twelve-twenty-five. The SWAT team
will be there.

EXT. PARKING LOT

CHAN
Peter. Peter. I'm disappointed.
All that Shaolin training as a
child. Those razor sharp
instincts. All forgotten. That's
too bad.
71.

EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

PEDESTRIAN #1
Oh, sorry. Sorry.

COP #2 (O.S.)
Easy does it, now. Just, just,
easy does it. Don't push.

COP #3 (O.S.)
All right. Just pull it back,
folks. Just pull...

INT. BLAISDELL'S OFFICE

STRENLICH
You're not going to like it.

BLAISDELL
Yeah. Tell me.

STRENLICH
I just heard from Captain Stiles.
He's steaming. The SWAT team
burst out onto an empty roof. No
Peter, no Tan's men, nothing. He
wants you to consider the notion
that Tan has turned him.

BLAISDELL
You tell Stiles what he can do
with that notion. You know what
that means? They made Peter. And
that means they'll hit the Mayor
at the brownstone. You get on the
radio!

EXT. ROOF

MAYOR (V.O.)
I want to thank the people of this
community for giving me this
opportunity to speak to you face-
to-face about what has become a
very serious problem. The problem
has a name... Tan. Whenever
greed, intimidation, and
destructive ambition threatens the
stability and well-being of an
entire community...

HOP SUNG
Aaaah!
73.

MAYOR (V.O.)
... all citizens of all
communities everywhere are
threatened... they hit back,
hard... for as long as it takes.
We must now undestand.

PEDESTRIAN #2
Hey, man, look! Look up there!

EXT. CHINATOWN STREET

COP #3
Get in.

HOP SUNG
Your son dies today. Tan will
kill him.

INT. TAN'S BASEMENT

TAN
Tie him up.

PETER
Was it the aftershave that gave me
away? You know, all undercover
cops use that "Wiseguy" fragrance.
Maybe we outta switch to Old
Spice.

TAN
You may know who betrayed you. It
would be as well for Mr. Chan to
know my little secret also.
Before the lady in question takes
a knife to his throat. Marilyn
Blake.

INT. TEMPLE

CAINE
A well-tied knot though it makes
use of no ropes, cannot be untied.

YOUNG PETER
Yeah, well this rope feels pretty
real to me. Why can't I just use
a sharp knife?

CAINE
A worthwhile idea. This exercise
is for those rare moments when a
knife is not at hand. Stretch and
loosen.
75.

INT. TAN'S BASEMENT

PETER
... loosen. Stretch...

CHAN
Marilyn Blake? That's hot. Right
about now she's drenched in the
Mayor's blood.

CAINE'S VOICE
But she is not.

TAN
No! Do not interfere. Stay out
of this. I have been waiting. I
should have known the fires that
disfigured me could not destroy
you.

CAINE
We were like brothers, you and I.
There was a time when your spirit
flowed through my veins.

TAN
All those years ago I told you to
discard formal wisdom and
knowledge, and the happiness of
the people will increase a hundred
times. Discard kindness and
righteousness, and the love for
family will be restored. You
never answered me, Kwai Chang
Caine.

CAINE
Discard cunning and profit, and
bandits and thieves shall cease to
exist. A name can be changed, but
not one's soul. You murdered the
priests. And so I thought, my own
son. The old ones cry for
vengeance.

TAN
Kill him!

PETER
Aaaaah! You ever thought of
joining the police force? You
kick 'em, I'll shoot 'em. We'll
make a hell of a team. We've
gotta get to the Mayor. He's
going to be...
77.

CAINE
He is safe. Your wound is bad...

PETER
Naw, I've had worse. Tan...

CAINE
Gone...

PETER
It was kind of hard to listen as
Chan was trying to kill me at the
time, but you and Tan go way back?

CAINE
We know him by another name. He
is the renegade Shaolin who
destroyed our temple.

PETER
You kidding me? No. You don't do
a lot of that. Well, let him run.
We'll pick him up. Chan too.
They're finished in Chinatown.

CAINE
Tan will return.

PETER
Ah, yes. Darkness shall overcome
the light, as you would say, but
splinters of black will easily be
crushed. The illumination of one
candle shall forever touch
mankind's luminous spirit.

CAINE
I never said anything like that.
That means absolutely nothing.

PETER
I know. It sounded great though,
didn't it? How did you find me
here? Oh, no, no, no, no. Don't,
don't tell me. I don't wanna
know.

CAINE
Don't talk.

PETER
I like to talk.
78.

EXT - ALLEYWAY

TAN
Yaaaaah! Yaaaaaah!

EXT. AGRIPPA CLUB

TYLER
(sings)
"Look into my eyes, do you see the
light of my love for you? Lately
I don't know where this need of
mine will lead me to. Take me by
the hand once again, do you feel a
fire of a never ending,
power-ending embrace. I know you
see what's written on my face. I
want you back. Back in my life
again...

CAINE
So, this is where you come for
peace and meditation?

PETER
No, this is where I come for the
best chili and the coldest light
beer in town. And to listen to a
girl I'm nuts about sing like that
every night.

TYLER
(sings)
"... I want you back, you are
my... you are my life, so please
be kind again... "

CAINE
Does she share your affection?

PETER
It's kind of a time management
problem. Sometimes I think I'm in
love with her, sometimes she
thinks she's in love with me. But
those times don't usually happen
at the same time. Listen, my, uh,
apartment isn't exactly the
Ritz-Carlton, but the spare
bedroom's got kinda of a cozy
feeling and it's at least twelve
feet bigger than that cell you
used to live in at the temple.
80.

CAINE
I cannot stay with you.

PETER
You can't leave. I'll have you
arrested.

CAINE
For what crime?

PETER
Desertion in the face of a son's
love. It's taken me fifteen years
to find you again. And now that
I've got you all to my self, I
can't think of a damned thing to
say that'll make you wanna stay.

CAINE
When you can snatch the matchbook
before me, you will no longer need
a teacher.

PETER
Does that mean you're gonna stay,
Pop?

CAINE
Don't ever call me that.

PETER
Hey. An address would be nice.
You know, forward old mail, stop
