Astrophysics II (Phy662) Model Question

Time: 3 hours
Full Marks: 60 / Pass Marks: 30
Attempt all questions.

1. What do you mean by metric of space time? Derive Robertson-Walker metric that satisfies cosmological
principle as well as special theory of relativity in polar coordinates as,
𝑑𝑟 2
𝑑𝑠 2 = −𝑐 2 𝑑𝑡 2 + 𝑎(𝑡)2 [ + 𝑟 2 (𝑑𝜃 2 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝜃𝑑𝜙 2 )]
1 − 𝑘𝑟 2
where a(t) and k represent scalar factor and declaration parameter of the Universe. Under what condition
this metric satisfies Hubble law? Discuss. [12]
2. Describe thermal history of the Universe. Find the expression for energy density for relativistic particles and
temperature distribution for non-relativistic particles. Discuss the difference and hence show that the rate of
change of entropy is given by
𝑑𝑆 𝑉
= [𝜌̇ + 3𝐻(𝜌 + 𝑃)]
𝑑𝑡 𝑇
where H and r represent Hubble parameter and density of the Universe. Discuss the conditions under which
entropy is conserved. [12]
OR
Density profile of a galaxy is given by
𝑞𝑎 𝑟𝑞
𝜌(𝑟) = 𝑀
4𝜋 𝑟 3 (𝑟 + 𝑎)𝑞+1 𝑡𝑜𝑡
where r is the radial distance from the centre of the galaxy, q is an adjustable parameter, a is a scaling
constant, and Mtot is the total mass of the galaxy. Find expressions for mass profile and gravitational
potential profile assuming q≠ 0. Discuss your result in the context of q = 0.
3. Outline the results obtained by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) Survey and discuss the
physics of CMB power spectrum and show that it can be expressed using spherical harmonics. [8]
OR
Explain red giant phase, helium flash and horizontal branch phase in the post main sequence evolution of
less massive star. Why surface temperature of the star increases but luminosity remains constant during
horizontal branch? Explain.
4. Describe interstellar extinction due to dust. Discuss interstellar extinction curve and explain toe, knee and
bump of the curve. [8]
5. Describe Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. Discuss ‘neutron freeze out’ and ‘deuterium bottle-neck’ condition in
the early Universe. [8]
6. The chemical composition of a molecular cloud is as follows: 95% Hydrogen and 5% Helium. Find the
Jeans mass and length of the cloud having temperature 50 K and density 2 x 10-20 kg/m3. What will happen
to the Jeans mass if temperature of the molecular cloud reduces to 3 K without increasing density? [Given:
mH = 1.67 x 10-27 kg, k = 1.38 x 10-23 JK-1, G = 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2Kg-2] [6]
7. Describe PPI reaction in brief and find the number of electron neutrinos produced per second in the Sun
assuming PPI reactions is the main source of helium production. What fractions of the neutrinos are
intercepted by the cross section of the Earth? Calculate and discuss. [Given: solar luminosity 3.8 x 1026
Watt] [6]
