Sheet 7 Topic : Routh Stability Criterion
Level 3 Date : 13/12/2014

1. Using Routh stability criterion, study the stability of the control systems which has the following
characteristic equation:
(a) S4 + S3 + 2S2 + 2S + 3 = 0.
(b) S4 + 2S3 + 3S2 + 4S + 5 = 0.
(c) S3 + 2S2 + S + 2 = 0.
(d) S6 + 4S4 + S2 + 16 = 0.
(e) S5 + 2S4 + 24S3 + 48S2 - 25S - 50 = 0.
(f) S5 + S4 + 4S3 + 24S2 + 3S + 63 = 0.
(g) S5 + 2S4 + 16S3 + 30S2 + 20S + 40 = 0.

2. Given a unity feedback system with G(s)= ( , find the values of K and  which
S S+ 1 )( S+2 ) ( S+3)
keeps the system stable according to Routh criterion.
K ( s +2 ) (s+ 4)
3. Given a unity feedback system with G ( s )= , find the values of K which keeps the
s 2 (s 2 +2 s+20)
system stable.
C( s) K
4. Given the transfer function = find the value of K which keeps the system
R( s) S ( S + S+1 ) ( S+2 ) + K

stable.

5. Find the value of K which keeps the system with the following characteristic equation stable:
(S + 2) (S + 4) (S2 + 6S + 24) + K = 0.
