SPECIFICATION – HVAC CHEMICAL FILTER UNITS

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification
This specification describes the requirements for chemical filter units, complete
with all accessory items as described herein and required by the design.
B. System Description
1. Chemical Filter Units shall be factory fabricated and assembled, and consist
of fans, motor and drive assembly, housing, dampers, plenums, filters,
media, control devices, and accessories as defined in this specification, data
sheets and drawings.
2. The unit shall be suitable to operate between 0oC to 50oC ambient
temperatures, and have a capacity as scheduled at an ambient temperature
specified in MQ-SP-C-2000, or higher if specified.
3. Chemical filter units shall meet the commissioning requirements of MQ-SP-
H-4701 and this specification.
4. Chemical filters shall be furnished completely assembled. Field work shall
be limited to power, control and ductwork connections, and loading of
chemical filter media.
C. Equipment Noise level Limits
The equipment noise shall meet the criteria set forth in MQ-SP-M-4032 and MQ-
SP-H-4700.

3.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

The following quality assurance items are in addition to the general quality assurance requirements of
specification MQ-SP-H-4701 and the contract documents.

3.1 Manufacturer's Qualifications

A. Chemical filter units shall be the standard product of an established equipment


manufacturer regularly engaged in the production of such units, with installations in
successful operation for a minimum of ten years. Manufacturer shall have a
minimum of ten (10) years experience in the design, fabrication, installation, testing
and commissioning of chemical filter units and media.
B. Manufacturer shall have a permanent local representative or designated authorized
service representative in Saudi Arabia.
C. The manufacturer shall be a single source provider of the chemical filtration unit,
chemical media and testing services.
D. Chemical filter units shall have a minimum of five years of successful operation in
Saudi Arabia.
E. Manufacturer shall be ISO 9001 certified.

3.2 Testing

A. Fans shall be factory tested for flow rate, pressure, power, air density, rotation speed
and efficiency in accordance with AMCA 210.
B. All unit electrical devices shall be energized and operated under design condition as
components to ensure operational integrity prior to the unit shipment
C. Units shall be tested in accordance with AMCA 300, and shall bear AMCA certified
sound ratings seal. The equipment SPL shall not exceed the limits as specified in
Section 1.1 C.
D. Media testing services shall be provided by the supplier of the chemical filter unit
and media. The testing service shall be provided at no additional charge for the life
of the system.

3.3 Design

A. Media section shall have at least 99.95% corrosive gases removal efficiency for at
least 180 days.

B. Expected air contaminants should be stated to determine any possibility of


corrosion. Corrosion tests can be executed locally, based on the reactivity of copper
and silver coupons, to determine the affect of the expected air contaminants.
C. Humidity control is the first line of defense against corrosion due to air
contamination.
D. The unit capacity shall be rated at the ambient temperature specified in MQ-SP-C-
2000 or higher temperature as required. All the components (such as bearing,
wiring, motor, all electrical accessories, etc.) shall be suitable to handle the
operation at 50o C ambient temperature, or higher temperature specified.
E. Outdoor unit shall be completely weatherproofed and designed, including but not
limited to casing coating if required, for use under job-site outdoors environments.
F. Electrical components, devices, and accessories shall be listed and labeled as
defined in NFPA 70, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having
jurisdiction, and marked for intended use.

4.0 SUBMITTALS

The Contractor providing the equipment, prior to procurement, shall submit for approval the following
product’s information in accordance with submittals’ requirements prescribed in the Contract/Purchase
Order (PO) general conditions. Submittal information shall be SI units.

Attachment 1 of this specification contains equipment schedule. The information listed in that
schedule shall be provided as minimum for review before preliminary acceptance of the system.

4.1 Product Data

For each chemical filter unit indicated, include the following as a minimum:
A. Manufacturer/Representative names/contact information, equipment model/serial
numbers, shipping/operating weights and date/location of manufacturing. Same
data shall be provided for other major components as fans and motors if
manufactured by others i.e. original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data.
B. Electrical schematic diagrams shall be provided showing all manufacturer and
customer control devices and interlocking.
C. Fan curves indicating unit operating point and unit airflow.
D. Certified unit-sound power ratings as specified in Section 1.1 C.
E. Motor ratings, electrical characteristics, and motor and fan accessories.
F. Motor data sheets in accordance with MQ-SP-E-6022 and MQ-DS-E-6022.
G. Housing and frame material gages and finishes.
H. Filters and media with performance characteristics, including media type, chemical
media residence time calculations, kilograms of media, expected media life based
on unit location, bed depth, media MSDS sheets, etc. Formal media analysis reports
shall be issued directly to the Owner to aid in maintenance scheduling. Refer to 3.2
D.

I. Dampers, including housings, linkages, and operators.

4.2 Shop Drawings

For each chemical filter unit indicated, shop drawings shall be submitted and show details of
the following as a minimum:
A. Wiring diagrams shall clearly indicate all earthing, power, control and signal wiring
and connections. Wiring diagrams shall differentiate between manufacturer
installed and customer installed wiring.
B. Manufacturers’ certified cut sheets indicating unit dimensions, weights, connection
points and lifting points.
C. Unit internal components layout and configuration.

4.3 Installation, Operation and Maintenance Data

For each chemical filter unit, the following information shall be submitted as a minimum:
A. Unless otherwise specified, six bound copies of the installation, operation and
maintenance manuals shall be provided. Optionally, electronic copies of the manual
may be provided in a format acceptable to the Owner.
B. Maintenance data shall include maintenance instructions, instructions for
lubrication, filter replacement, motor and drive replacement, and factory-
recommended spare parts lists.
C. The spare parts list shall be tabulated and include for every part the OEM’s
model/part number. Cross sectional views shall be provided showing locations of
the spare parts.
D. Maintenance data, product data, shop drawings, schematic and wiring diagrams
shall be included in the operating and maintenance manuals.

4.4 Recommended Spare Parts List

Submit factory recommended spare parts list, for inventory purpose, with price for each part.
List shall be tabulated and include, for every part, the OEM’s model/part number.

5.0 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND HANDLING

5.1 General Requirements

A. The following product delivery and handling requirements are in addition to the
product delivery and handling requirements of specifications MQ-SP-H-4700 and
MQ-SP-H-4701.
B. Deliver chemical filter units with factory installed shipping skids and lifting lugs;
pack small components in factory fabricated protective containers.
C. Handle chemical filter units carefully to avoid damage to components, enclosures
and finish. Do not install damaged components; replace and return damaged
components to air handling unit Manufacturer.

D. Store chemical filter units in clean, dry place and protect from weather and
construction traffic.
E. Comply with Manufacturer's rigging and installation instructions for unloading
chemical filter units and moving them to final locations.

6.0 WARRANTY

6.1 General Requirements

A. The Equipment described by this specification shall be quoted and sold in full
compliance with Terms and Conditions of Purchase.
B. The equipment manufacturer shall guarantee the entire unit to be free from defects
in material, design and/or workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months. The
warranty shall commence from the date the unit was commissioned and accepted by
the OWNER (MARAFIQ) for it’s beneficial use or eighteen (18) months from the
date of receiving the equipment at the owner job-site.

7.0 PRODUCTS

7.1 General

A. Provide factory-fabricated and factory-tested chemical filter units as indicated, of


sizes and capacities as required.
B. Provide a 8 mm - 316 stainless steel static pressure sensing tips before and after pre-
filter and final filter. Extend the tubing to outside housing with 10 mm bulk head
fitting to unit mounted differential pressure gage.
C. Dwyer magnehelic pressure differential gauges shall be provided for pre-filters and
final filters.

7.2 Pre-filter Section

The first stage shall be a pre-filter selected to remove 30% (ASHRAE 52.2) of all particles
exceeding 1 micron in size with complete accessibility through side access panels. Refer to
MQ-SP-H-4700 for additional filter requirements.

7.3 Fan Section

A. Fan shall be of industrial quality, heavy duty centrifugal/plug fans with aluminum
wheel and housing and shall be AMCA 99 Type B spark resistant construction
minimum. Fan sections shall be provided with a redundant fan.

B. Fan shall provide the specified air flow at specified external static pressure with a
dirty filter allowance. The fan selected shall operate a minimum of 15 percent
capacity from the surge line at the minimum design flow.
C. The blower shall be located before the chemical media bed (blow-through
arrangement) such that the chemical filter is under positive pressure to eliminate
corrosive gas/air infiltration.

D. Bearings shall be one of the following types:


1. Pre-lubricated and sealed shaft bearings shall be self-aligning, pillow block
type ball bearings with an ISO 218 L10 life of 120,000 hours.
2. Grease lubricated shaft bearings shall be self aligning, pillow block type,
tapered roller bearings with double locking collars and two piece, cast iron
housing, with an ISO 218 L10 life of 120,000 hours.
3. Grease lubricated shaft bearings shall be self aligning, pillow block type,
ball or roller bearings with adapter mount and two piece, cast iron housing
with an ISO 218 L10 life of 120,000 hours.
E. Fan shafts shall be solid steel, turned, ground and polished.
F. Fan wheels shall be keyed to the shaft and designed for continuous operation at the
maximum rated speed and motor horsepower.
G. Fan wheels and shafts shall be statically and dynamically balanced individually, and
as an assembly. Fan selection shall be made near the midpoint of the fan curve and
selected to operate at least 20 percent below the first critical speed.
H. Fan shall be selected for normal operation within 10 percent of the best efficiency
point. Fans shall be selected within the middle range of the fan airflow versus head
application curves.
I. Fans shall be mounted on unitary base with spring vibration isolators. Fan, motor,
drive belts, unitary base, and spring isolators shall be furnished as a complete unit.
Belt guards shall be fabricated to OSHA requirements, 2.7 mm thick, 20 mm
diamond mesh wire screen welded to steel angle frame or equivalent; prime coated.
J. The fan assembly shall be internally isolated on spring mounts. Vibration isolation
mounts shall isolate 90 percent of fan and motor vibration.

7.4 Chemical Media Section

A. Media section shall have at least 99.95% corrosive gases removal efficiency for at
least 180 days.
B. Media section shall contain a minimum of two beds, with a total minimum residence
time of 1.2 seconds.
C. Type and quantity of media shall be selected to provide an ISA standard S71.04 G1
environment, or as required, inside the protected space and shall be based on the air
quality at the project or protected space location.

7.5 Final Filter Section

The final filter section shall be complete with filters selected to remove 90% (ASHRAE 52.2)
of all particles exceeding 1 micron in size with complete accessibility through side access
panels. Filters shall be supported by track with integral sealing material. Refer to MQ-SP-H-
4700 for additional filter requirements.

A. The industrial front access housing shall be constructed of stainless steel,


continuously welded, reinforced with vertical formed channel supports at 600 mm
intervals.
B. Coating shall be as specified in Section 7.0, on both inside and outside surfaces after
fabrication. For 100% stainless steel housing, housing coating is not required. Refer
to MQ-SP-M-4038 and MQ-SP-M-4039 for any additional painting requirements.
C. Housing shall be provided with gasketed front access doors.
D. Latches shall have a positive locking action and shall include a 316 stainless steel
shaft.
E. Hinges, locks and latches shall be constructed of 316 stainless steel.
F. The housing shall be provided with lifting lugs and structural shape skids or
supports.
G. The housing shall be designed to facilitate fan and motor maintenance and removal.
H. All access doors and panels shall have a flexible bonding strap or wire for suitable
earthing link.
I. Door seals shall be attached by mechanical means and designed for replacement.
Seals shall not be glued on except in conjunction with mechanical attachment.
J. Door closures shall be of the hinged bulkhead type where the rear seal nearest the
hinges shall not be compressed completely prior to latching the door. Piano hinges
shall not be used.
K. Intake and discharge of unit shall be flanged, and suitable for ductwork connection.
L. Fasteners shall stainless steel including motor hold down bolts. Set screws and
general hubs shall be coated prior to assembly with an anti-seizing compound.
Slotted screws shall not be used.

7.7 Electrical and Motors

A. Units shall be equipped with motors meeting the requirements of MQ-SP-E-6022.


B. Fan motors shall be TEFC type. The fan motor, and the electrical accessories shall
be rated at 50° C or higher temperature as required.
C. All motors shall be duty rated for continuous operation for the electrical supply
indicated on the unit data sheets.
D. Unless a lower rating is specifically allowed elsewhere in the MARAFIQ Project
Specifications, electrical enclosures located indoors in air conditioned areas shall be
NEMA 3 (IP 44) or greater, electrical enclosures located indoors in a non-air
conditioned areas shall be NEMA 3S (IP 54) or greater, and electrical enclosures
located in outdoor areas shall be NEMA 4X (IP 65) or greater.
E. Internal wiring shall be color coded and tagged with permanent shrink tube labels at
each termination, junction box, and device. Wire label designations and color-
coding shall correspond to the schematic and wiring diagrams furnished with the
unit.

F. Wiring shall be copper and connections shall be lugged bolted type. Wire nut
connections shall not be acceptable. Connections shall include lock washers and
anti-Galvanic corrosion protection joint compound to ensure long term integrity.
G. Conduit entrance plates of sufficient dimensions shall be provided for external
wiring conduit connection and entrance (side or/and bottom).
H. Electrical components such as motors, controllers, contactors, and non-fused
disconnects shall be provided for complete and operable systems. Interconnecting
wiring for components of packaged equipment shall be provided as an integral part
of the equipment. Controls shall allow for hand/off/auto functions.
I. Each fan shall be provided with independent power and control circuit.
J. Externally mounted unit terminal box shall be utilized for connection between the
unit and remote mounted HVAC system control panel. Power and control wiring
shall be wired to the terminal box. Terminal strips shall be provided as needed and
each strip point shall be clearly labeled for easy field connection.
K. Current sensors shall be provided between starters and motors and wired to terminal
strip in the terminal box for automatic redundant fan start on primary fan failure,
positive indication of fan failure and fan monitoring.
L. All electrical components shall be UL or FM Listed..

7.8 Electrical Protection and Controls

A. All electrical motors and associated control devices, shall be powered from one
single customer furnished supply (as shown on the equipment data sheet), unless
otherwise specified. Motors shall each be provided with individual overcurrent and
overload protective devices and auxiliary control equipment, as applicable.
B. All electrical apparatus shall be protected against the harmful effects of short-
circuits and earth faults.

7.9 Grounding

Two external ground termination points shall be provided to facilitate Customer connection of
the external grounding system to the equipment. All electrical equipment on or within the
packaged unit shall be grounded from these grounding points.

7.10 Controls

Control components shall meet the requirements of MQ-SP-H-4709.

8.0 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Chemical filter unit electric motors and all other electrical and instrumentation equipment in hazardous
areas shall be suitable for installation in the hazardous area specified on the data sheet and shall be of
spark resistant construction per AMCA 99.

Chemical filter unit casing, and when specified, fan wheels, shall be coated with Heresite P-413 pure
phenolic thermosetting resinous coating. Coating thickness shall be 0.051 mm DFT. Preparation and
application of coating shall be in accordance with coating and coil manufacturer’s written instructions.

10.0 CAPACITY AND UNIT CHARACTERISTICS

Provide the applicable information listed in Attachment 1 for each chemical filter unit. Capacity shall
be rated at design temperatures specified in MQ-SP-C-2000 or higher temperature as required, and all
the components shall be suitable for the operation under the ambient temperatures of 0° C to 50° C, or
higher if specified.

11.0 PROTECTION OF APPARATUS

11.1 General

A. Equipment and accessories shall be delivered with protective crating and coverings
as recommended by the equipment manufacturer.
B. Equipment and accessories shall be stored to prevent damage and protect them from
weather, dirt, fumes, water, and construction debris.
C. Equipment and accessories shall be handled in accordance with manufacturers
written rigging and installation instructions for unloading, transporting, and setting
in final location.

12.0 TESTING

In addition to testing specified above, all unit electrical devices shall be energized as components to
ensure operation integrity prior to the unit shipment. Replacement of nonfunctioning items shall be
conducted with all reasonable speed, and the quality assurance engineer shall certify that all such
changes have in fact been undertaken.

13.0 IDENTIFICATION AND NUMBERING

Chemical filter units shall be tagged with a 40 mm x 125 mm x 1.5 mm 304 stainless steel plate with
engraved identification numbers (Owner’s Equipment Number, Manufacturer Name, Model No., Serial
No., Electric Data, and P.O. Number.) permanently riveted to the frame in a conspicuous location.
