A Report on Industrial Visit of B.E. Mechanical Engineering,


Pawana Hydro Power Station, Pawana Nagar, Tal-Maval, Dist-Pune.
Aim: To study hydro Electric power generation.

Place of Industrial Visit: -Pawana Hydro Power Station, Pawana Nagar, Tal-Maval, Dist-
Pune.

Information - For the B.E. Mechanical Engineering Students the visit arranged at Pawana
Hydro Power Station, Pawana Nagar, Tal-Maval, Dist-Pune.as per the University of Pune
new syllabus to study and see the steam power plant on date 23 March 2018.

The project aims at fulfilling the water needs of Pimpri Chinchwad. The Pawana dam,
constructed in 1972, is 1,329 m (4,360 ft) long and 42.37 m (139.0 ft) high, with a gross
storage capacity of 10.77 TMC.It is about 45 km via Paud from Pune. Daily electricity
generation capacity 10 MWH. Electricity supply grid: Khopoli to Talegaon Grid or
Ganeshkhind to PCMC area.

Generator Specification: Shaft RPM: 250 rpm, Capacity: 10000 KW, Volts: 11000, Mfg.
year: 1984, Mfg. company: Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL), Type: HGS
460/52/240.

Turbine specifications: Type: Kaplan_Vertical , Shaft RPM: 250 rpm, Rated Head: 25 m,
Rated output: 10450, Mfg. year: 1984, Cooling oil Grade:SP57_SERVO, No of Blades: 06,

1. Principle and working of Turbine and generator shown at the steam power plant to
students by Shri J Y Barve, Addl. Executive Engineer, Pawana HPS, Pawananagar.
2. Hydroelectric power comes from the potential energy of dammed water driving a
water turbine and generator.

Conclusion-After successfully completing this Visit,

1. Students can understand actual working of hydroelectric power plant and its
components specifications.
2. Studied working and specifications of penstock, butterfly valve, servo motors, cooling
oil and its grades, hydraulic system, pressure relieve valves, generator, guide vanes,
guide blade angle, turbine, dewatering pump, Pressure relive tank/ accumulator, Step
up/down transformer, compressor, hydraulic transducers, draft tube, switch gear, etc.
