Seven Sacrements
There are seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, which according to Catholic
theology were instituted by Jesus and entrusted to the Church. Sacraments are visible rites seen
as signs and efficacious channels of the grace of God to all those who receive them with the
proper disposition. The sevenfold list of sacraments is often organized into three groups:
the sacraments of initiation -consisting of Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist; the
sacraments of healing, consisting of Penanceand Anointing of the Sick; and the sacraments of
service: Holy Orders and Matrimony.
1) Baptism- The Catholic Church sees baptism as the first and basic sacrament of Christian
initiation.[14] In the Western or Latin Church, baptism is usually conferred today by
pouring water three times on the recipient's head, while reciting the baptismal formula: "I
baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"Baptism is
the sacrament of salvation and door to all other sacramant.
2) Eucharist- The Eucharist, also called the Blessed Sacrament, is the sacrament by which
Catholics partake of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and participate in his one
sacrifice. Those who prtake of th Eucharist recieves the real body ,Blood,Soul and
Divinity of Christ in what appears to be a bread and wine during Mass.It is a daily
process.
3) Confirmation- The rite of Confirmation is anointing the forehead with chrism(Holy oil),
together with the laying on of the minister's hands and the words, "Be sealed with the Gift
of the Holy Spirit." The recipient receives the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom,
understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord .
4) THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK-. given to seriously ill Christians, and the special
graces received unite the sick person to the passion of Christ. The Sacrament consists of
the anointing of the forehand and hands of the person with blessed oil,by the minister.
5) Matrimony- This sacrament, seen as a sign of the love uniting Christ and the Church,
establishes between the spouses a permanent and exclusive bond, sealed by God. The
sacrament of marriage gives the couple the grace to grow into a union of heart and soul,
to continue life, and to provide stability for themselves and their children. Children are
the fruit and bond of a marriage.
6)Penance and Reconciliation (Confession)- It is the sacrament of spiritual healing of a baptized
person from the distancing from God resulting from sins committed. The priest is bound by the
"seal of confession", which is inviolable, acts as a visible representative of Christ who forgives
sins through Him.
7)Holy orders- Holy Orders is the Sacrament by which a man is made a bishop, a priest, or
a deacon, and thus dedicated to be an image of Christ. It is done through Bishop”s laying on of
hands and prayers – they are given the grace to live out their lives in tht service to tht church.
