ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION

Generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Malaysia has increased more than 91% over the
past decade. According the research from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), MSW
management in Malaysia can be considered relatively substandard and chaotic. Landfilling is the
most preferred method of MSW disposal in Malaysia due to several factors. Landfilling can cause
many problems because it is not sustainable.

The causes of management of municipal solid waste become one of Malaysia’s most critical
environmental issues is rapid economic development and population growth, inadequate
infrastructure, expertise and land scarcity. The purpose of the study is to evaluating the
generation, characteristics and management of solid waste in Malaysia based on published
information. A person produce about 0.5-0.8 kg/day in which domestic waste is the primary
source.

Solid waste can be categorized into many types. The types of solid waste is textile waste, food
waste, plastic waste, paper waste, yard waste and etc. Generally, each of every waste has
different on the moisture content. In this experiment, we collect paper waste to determine its
moisture content. Paper is the waste that commonly found from any sources especially from the
office building. Paper is actually give the negative impacts towards the environment. According to
the article from Environmental Professional Network (EPN), paper industries emit greenhouse
gases in the process of manufacturing paper and in the process of providing energy supply to
paper plants. Greenhouse gases are mainly responsible for climatic changes and global warming.
The disposal of paper also contributes to global warming. Paper emits harmful methane gas when
it rots.
OBJECTIVE:

1. To determine moisture content in paper waste.

2. To compare the moisture content between paper waste and plastic waste.
3. To determine the standard error and standard deviation.

METHODOLOGY

1. 3 empty crucible was weighed and the reading is taken and considered as (W 1).
2. Paper waste that already cut into small pieces was placed in the crucible and labelled.
3. All the crucible was weighed again and the reading is taken.
4. All the crucible were left in the oven for 24 hours.
5. After 24 hours, all the crucible were removed from oven and placed into desiccator until it
cool to room temperature.
6. All the crucible was weighed and reading is taken and considered as ( W 2).
7. The moisture content for the paper was calculated by using formula :

𝑊1− 𝑊2
% H2O= 𝑊1
× 100
