Deployment Rules

for Amplifier in FSP 3000R7 Rel.7.x

The document is referred to as deployment rules.

Scope This document describes the deployment rules for amplifier in the Fiber
Service Platform 3000R7 Release 7.0.1 and higher as they are mandatory
to be observed for laser safety classification reasons.
It is not the intent of this document to provide network design and con-
figuration rules in regards to the usage of amplifier modules in different
networks - especially protected - scenarios. These issues are dealt with in
other documents.

Configurations not in accordance with this document are not covered

Caution by the classification for laser product safety standard issued by
ADVA and must therefore not be deployed without written consent
by ADVA.

If a configuration not in accordance with these deployment rules is

Caution installed without prior written consent by ADVA the classification
for laser product safety standard (laser safety class 1M/ hazard level
class 1M) is invalid. In that case classify the product again at your
responsibility and take appropriate actions.

EDFA types The following EDFA types are supported by FSP 3000R7 Rel.7.0.1 and
available in FSP later. For details on the individual releases in which a given EDFA module
3000R7 Rel.7.1 has been released please refer to the respective release notes.

EDFA-C-S10; The EDFA-x-S10 amplifier is used to amplify the four wavelengths of a sin-
EDFA-L-S10 gle group. It is an uncontrolled amplifier in terms of gain or transients.
Therefore it needs to be encompassed by filter modules to limit the noise
generated by that EDFA. These filter modules can either be group splitter
modules for inline amplifier sites or channel splitter modules trailing a
preamplifier.
It can be used as a booster~, inline~ or preamplifier.

Chapter 1
Operating EDFAs in parallel
Some of the EDFA types available for FSP 3000R7 Rel.7.x may be operated
in parallel in a given direction. However there are certain requirements
which have to be met when operating EDFAs in parallel.
In addition to the parallel operation of amplifiers they might be deployed
in series. If the restrictions for the serial deployment of different EDFA
types are observed (as specified later in this document) only the last
EDFAs operating in parallel in front of any multiplexing stage need to be
observed.
The following drawing shows an example of EDFAs being deployed in se-
ries plus EDFAs being deployed in parallel prior to multiplexing stage.

In the following chapters examples are given for forbidden configura-

tions. These examples are not meant to be exhaustive so any further con-
figuration violating the requirements as given in the respective chapter
must not be deployed as well.

1.1 Operating EDFA-x-S10 in parallel

It is possible to deploy up to 16 EDFA-x-S10 in parallel in one direction.
The following drawing shows an EDFA-x-S10 being deployed in parallel,
e.g. using 4GSM.

EDFA-x-S10

These EDFA support the ALS scheme as implemented in

FSP 3000R7 Rel.7.x and therefore are not turned on all the time.
That way it is possible not to violate the requirements as set by the laser
safety class 1M while operating several EDFA-x-S10 in parallel.
In addition using the EDFA-x-S10 it is possible to build hybrid CWDM/
DWDM systems.
In addition the EDFA-x-S10 must not be operated in parallel with GC type
EDFAs as these EDFAs are turned on constantly and the sum of the output
power of the GC type amplifiers plus the ALS pulses amplified by the EDFA-
x-S10 EDFAs might violate the limits of laser safety class 1M.

1.2 Operating EDFA-x-D17-GC in parallel

It is possible to deploy a single EDFA-C-D17-GC and a single EDFA-L-D17-
GC in parallel in one direction.
The following drawing shows an EDFA-x-D17-GC being deployed in paral-
lel.

GC

The maximum output power of an EDFA-x-D17-GC is limited by design to

a value which allows the operation of an EDFA-C-D17-GC and an EDFA-L-
D17-GC in parallel and to maintain compliancy to laser safety class 1M re-
quirements.
In addition using the EDFA-C-D17-GC it is possible to build hybrid CWDM/
DWDM systems.
Besides the configurations described above the EDFA-x-D17-GC must not
be operated in parallel with any other EDFA as the resulting output power
might violate the limits of laser safety class 1M.
Deployment Rules_parallel.fm

Besides the examples for forbidden configurations given below the for-
bidden configurations including GC type amplifier as shown in Section 1.1
are to be observed as well.

1.3 Operating EDFA-C-S18-GC in parallel

The maximum output power of the EDFA-C-S18-GC is limited by design to
a value compliant to laser safety class 1M requirements.
The EDFA-C-S18-GC must not be operated in parallel in one direction with
any other EDFA type.
In addition there must be no other channel besides the C-Band deployed
in parallel (neither un-amplified L-Band nor CWDM) to an EDFA-C-S18-GC
as the resulting output power might violate the limits of laser safety class
1M.
Besides the examples for forbidden configurations given below the for-
bidden configurations including GC type amplifier in Section 1.1 are to be

observed as well.

1.4 Operating EDFA-C-D20-GC in parallel

The maximum output power of the EDFA-C-D20-GC is limited by design to
a value compliant to laser safety class 1M requirements.
The EDFA-C-D20-GC must not be operated in parallel in one direction with
any other EDFA type.
In addition there must be no other channel besides the C-Band deployed
in parallel (neither un-amplified L-Band nor CWDM) to an EDFA-C-D20-GC
as the resulting output power might violate the limits of laser safety class
1M.
Besides the examples for forbidden configurations given below the for-
bidden configurations including GC type amplifier in Section 1.1 are to be
observed as well.

1.5 Overview
The following table gives an overview about which EDFAs might be oper-
ated in parallel with each other if the respective requirements are met.
Refer to the chapters above for details on the requirements.

Please be aware that besides the requirements for parallel deployment of

EDFAs as defined in this chapter the requirements as defined in the
chapter regarding serial deployment of EDFAs have to be met as well.

Chapter 2
Operating EDFAs in series
For all configurations which are described in this chapter the require-
ments on parallel operation of EDFAs as specified in the previous chapter
need to be followed as well.
There will be drawings presented in this chapter visualizing the deploy-
ment of EDFAs in series. Please be aware that there might be additional
requirements in regards to network design (e.g. filter required) which are
not part of this document.
The drawings in this chapter only refer to the possibility to cascade EDFAs
in series and will not show any additional elements of the network which
might be necessary.

2.1 Operating EDFA-x-S10 in series

The EDFA-x-S10 can be cascaded with other EDFA-x-S10 in series.
The following drawing shows an EDFA-x-S10 being deployed in series with
another EDFA-x-S10.
EDFA-x-S10

EDFA-x-S10

The EDFA-x-S10 amplifier might be cascaded with GC type amplifiers if all

EDFA-x-S10 amplifier of one direction are preceding the GC type amplifier.
The following drawing shows an EDFA-x-S10 being deployed in series pre-
ceding GC type EDFAs.

An EDFA-x-S10 might follow any GC type amplifier in the case that the
EDFA-x-S10 is used as a preamplifier on a group level (4 channels only)
and is followed only by a termination or regeneration of all amplified
channels.
The following drawing shows an EDFA-x-S10 being deployed as preampli-
fier following GC type EDFAs.

Besides this application the amplified channels must not be multiplexed

or amplified again.
Therefore an EDFA-x-S10 must not follow any GC type amplifier if the am-
plified signals are not terminated or regenerated as in this case the limits
of laser safety class 1M might be exceeded.

2.5 Overview
The following table gives an overview about which EDFAs might be oper-
ated in series with each other if the respective requirements are met. Re-
fer to the chapters above for details on the requirements.
The table has to be read in such a way that the EDFAs defined in the left-
most column are the ones preceding the EDFAs in the upper row.
