SURFACESHIELD S
Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Surface Treatment PC 951
FEATURES  RESISTS PENETRATION OF MOST TYPES OF GRAFFITI
 REMOVES GRAFFITI WITHOUT HARSH CHEMICALS
 INVISIBLE AND VAPOUR PERMEABLE FILM
 SAFE TO USE IN PUBLIC AREAS DURING APPLICATION, REMOVAL AND REAPPLICATION
 DOES NOT CHANGE THE APPERANCE OF THE ORIGINAL SURFACE
USES Surfaceshield™ S is a microfilm surface treatment that can be safely applied onto a range of surfaces to provide
protection against graffiti and normal atmospheric dirt and grime. It is water-based, low VOC and non
flammable. With a low VOC formula, Surfaceshield™ S is suitable for use in Greenstar compliant projects. Most
types of graffiti on surfaces treated with Surfaceshield™ S can be safely and effectively removed, avoiding
costly traditional methods of removing graffiti such as chemical stripping, abrading or abrasive blasting. Once
graffiti has been removed, Surfaceshield™ S can be economically reapplied and avoids the high cost of
preparing and re-painting surfaces. Surfaceshield™ S can be used on most types of natural and artificial stone
and brick facades.

PROCEDURE
PREPARATION 1. The surface must be free from contaminants including grease, oil, dirt, bond breakers, previous coatings,
AND APPLICATION sealers, and loosely adhering materials. An industrial detergent and hot water high-pressure cleaning may
be required for persistent deposits. Soft and easily damaged substrates, such as limestone and some
sandstone, may require specialized preparation prior to treatment with Surfaceshield™. Refer to your Dulux
Protective Coatings Specifications Consultant for specific advice.
2. Do not apply on strongly alkali surfaces (such as new concrete) as this may affect the performance of
Surfaceshield™ S.
3. For porous surfaces, dampen the surface with water.
4. Apply the first coat of Surfaceshield™ S so that a uniform, shiny film forms on the surface. Immediately re-
apply Surfaceshield™ S to areas where shine suddenly disappears. The amount of Surfaceshield™ S
required will vary with porosity of the surface being coated. Refer to the Typical Systems guide for
approximate spreading rates required. Excessive application will cause runs, yellowing or coating
delamination, while inadequate application will provide inadequate protection.
5. Once Surfaceshield™ S is touch dry and no longer visible, another coat may be applied.
6. Follow steps 4 and 5 for subsequent coats.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This product is to be applied by a specialist applicator suitably trained in the application of
Surfaceshield™ S and the removal of graffiti according to Surfaceshield™ guidelines. The applicator is required
to record application works and be able to remove graffiti from affected areas using the correct Surfaceshield™
procedure. Deviation from this requirement may adversely affect graffiti management.

SPREADING RATE 3 – 5 square metres per litre

ASSUMING NO LOSSES NOTE: Practical spreading rates will vary depending on such factors as application method, ambient
conditions, surface porosity and roughness.

SURFACE The surface must be free from grease, oil, dirt, bond breakers and other contaminants.
PREPARATION Concrete: Concrete must be at least 28 days old before coating. Remove all laitance, form release, curing
compounds, oil, grease and other surface contaminants.
APPLICATION Mix thoroughly using a power mixer until the contents are uniform.
BRUSH/ROLLER Suitable for small areas only. Apply even coats of the material to the prepared surface.
CONVENTIONAL Apply in multiple wet coats overlapping each pass 50%.
SPRAY
AIRLESS SPRAY Standard airless spray equipment. Tips between 0.17mm and 0.21mm are suggested to avoid flooding the surface.
PRECAUTIONS Surfaceshield™ S is an industrial product designed for use by trained applicators. Do not apply in conditions outside the
parameters stated in this document without the express written consent of Dulux Australia. Do not apply at temperatures
below 10°C. Concrete should be fully cured; application over strongly alkaline surfaces will cause coating to yellow and will
affect performance. Forced drying may limit adhesion and coating effectiveness. Soft and easily damaged substrates,
such as limestone and sandstone, may require special preparation prior to treatment with Surfaceshield™ S. Highest
protection is achieved after 7 days of curing. Dulux cannot guarantee that every type of graffiti can be completely
removed. This technology cannot protect against graffiti agents which etch, or otherwise damage the substrate.
CLEAN UP Clean all equipment with warm water and biodegradable waterbased detergent or degreaser after use.
CLEANING AND 1. Soak the surface with hot water 60-80°C, keeping it wet and hot for approximately 15 minutes (This activation
GRAFFITI time will vary according to substrate and ambient temperature). Do not apply high pressure at this time, as the
Surfaceshield™ S has not yet sufficiently activated and swelled.
REMOVAL
2. Check that the Surfaceshield™ S is completely activated. It should have a soft liquid gel like feel when
activated. Scrub a test area with a small brush and if graffiti is easy to remove, proceed with high pressure hot
water cleaning. If Surfaceshield™ S has not yet properly activated and swelled, continue to apply hot water and
re-check its activation stage.
3. Remove the Surfaceshield™ S from the side with high-pressure hot water with the nozzle held at a 30° to 45°
angle to the surface (never at right angles to the surface). The water temperature at the nozzle should be
maintained to around 60-80°C. Adjust water pressure according to the surface.
4. Once the graffiti has been removed, thoroughly wash and rinse the surface with hot water.
5. On porous surfaces, re-apply Surfaceshield™ S while the surface is still damp.
OVERCOATING The surface must be free of oil, grease and other contaminants. High-pressure water wash at 8.3 to 10.3 MPa (1,200 –
1,500 p.s.i.) to remove Surfaceshield™ S. Ensure the surface is sufficiently prepared before reapplication.
SAFETY Read Data Sheet, SAFETY DATA SHEET and any precautions on container labels. SAFETY DATA SHEET is

STORAGE Store in a well-ventilated area. Keep containers closed at all times.
HANDLING As with any chemical, ingestion, inhalation and prolonged or repeated skin contact should be avoided by good occupational work
practice. Eye protection approved to AS1337 should be worn where there is a risk of splashes entering the eyes. Always wash
hands before smoking, eating, drinking or using the toilet.
USING Use with good ventilation and avoid inhalation of spray mists and fumes. If risk of inhalation of spray mists exists, wear combined
organic vapour/particulate respirator. When spraying, users must comply with respective State Spray Painting regulations.
FLAMMABILITY This product is non flammable.
