SCOPE
Belt conveyor comprises of an endless belt made from flexible material. This material is
supported on rollers, and passing over larger rollers at each end, one of which is driven. The belt material
is usually fabric-reinforced rubber or plastics; segmental metal belts are also used. Belts can be specified
to withstand abrasive and corrosive materials.

MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION
1. The material of construction used is a stainless steel type 304 to provide higher corrosion
resistance.
2. An allowance of 20% safety factor is used for future expansion.
3. The maintenance distance around each equipment is 1m and minimum safety clearance of 2m.
Thus, the distance between the warehouse and rotary knife cutter is assumed to be 5m.
4. The approximate weight of the conveyor is 1.0 lb/in of width per running foot.
5. Three plies of polyester combined with polyamide textile fabric and bonded with synthetic rubber
compound is the type of belt to be use to give high strength, high impact resistance, excellent
flexibility, and negligible elongation.
6. The belt thickness is 9mm.

DESIGN BASIS
Design Assumptions
Design Requirements
1. Total Length and Inclination
The total length can be computed using Pythagorean Theorem,
𝐿 𝑇 = √𝐻2 + 𝐿2
Where:
LT = total length of conveyor
H = height from feed of conveyor to feed of rotary knife cutter
L = distance between the warehouse and rotary knife cutter
𝐿 𝑇 = √0.552 + 52 = 5.03𝑚
𝐿 𝑇 = √0.552 + 52 = 5.03𝑚

𝜃 = tan = 6.28 𝑑𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠

Use: Total Length = 5.1 m
Inclination: 7⁰
2. Capacity
Considering 20% safety factor,

𝑇= × = 2.6296 𝑡𝑜𝑛/ℎ𝑟
0.25 ℎ𝑟 1000𝑘𝑔
3. Belt Width
According to Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook, 7th ed., p. 21-11, Table 21-7, the belt width
to be used with the computed capacity of 3.1555 ton/hr is
Use: 21 kg
6. Belt Speed
According to Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook, 7th ed., p. 21-11, Table 21-7, the belt
speed to be used with the computed capacity of 3.1555 ton/hr is
7. Conveying time
The conveying time per cycle of the belt is calculated by,
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑟
𝑡𝑐 =
𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑
5.03 𝑚 60 𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝑡𝑐 = × = 9.9 𝑠𝑒𝑐
30.5 𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛 1 𝑚𝑖𝑛
8. Power Requirement
The power requirement is calculated by (Unit Operations, Brown, p. 57),
𝐹(𝐿 + 𝐿𝑜 )(𝑇 + 0.03𝑊𝑆) + 𝑇∆𝑧
𝑃=
990
Where,
P = power requirement, hp
W = mass of moving parts including belts and idlers per foot distance centers of terminal pulleys
