SCOPE
Belt conveyor comprises of an endless belt made from flexible material. This material is
supported on rollers, and passing over larger rollers at each end, one of which is driven. The belt material
is usually fabric-reinforced rubber or plastics; segmental metal belts are also used. Belts can be specified
to withstand abrasive and corrosive materials.

DEFINITIONS AND TERMINOLOGIES

Idler - It is used at a certain spacing for supporting the active as well as return side of the belt.
Conveyor Pulleys - It is used for providing the drive to the belt as well as for maintaining the proper
tension to the belt.
Conveyor Belt - It carries the material to be transported.
Feed - It is where the material enters the belt conveyor.
Discharge - It is where the material is discharged.

MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION
1. The material of construction used is a stainless steel type 304 to provide higher corrosion
resistance.
2. An allowance of 20% safety factor is used for future expansion.
3. The maintenance distance around each equipment is 1m and minimum safety clearance of 2m.
Thus, the distance between the warehouse and rotary knife cutter is assumed to be 5m.
4. The approximate weight of the conveyor is 1.0 lb/in of width per running foot.
5. Three plies of polyester combined with polyamide textile fabric and bonded with synthetic rubber
compound is the type of belt to be use to give high strength, high impact resistance, excellent
flexibility, and negligible elongation.
6. The belt thickness is 9mm.

DESIGN BASIS
Design Assumptions

1. The mass of the abaca stripping wastes is 657.39 kg.

2. The height of the rotary knife cutter is 1.55 m.
Design Requirements

1. Total Length and Inclination

2. Capacity
3. Belt Width
4. Trough Width and Skirt Seal
5. Mass of Moving Parts
6. Belt Speed
7. Conveying Time
8. Power Requirement

Design Requirements
1. Total Length and Inclination
The total length can be computed using Pythagorean Theorem,

𝐿 𝑇 = √𝐻2 + 𝐿2

Where:
LT = total length of conveyor
H = height from feed of conveyor to feed of rotary knife cutter
L = distance between the warehouse and rotary knife cutter
𝐿 𝑇 = √0.552 + 52 = 5.03𝑚
𝐿 𝑇 = √0.552 + 52 = 5.03𝑚
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 0.55
tan 𝜃 = =
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 5
−1
0.5
𝜃 = tan = 6.28 𝑑𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠
5
Use: Total Length = 5.1 m
Inclination: 7⁰
2. Capacity
Considering 20% safety factor,
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑑
𝑇=
𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
657.39 kg 𝑡𝑜𝑛
𝑇= × = 2.6296 𝑡𝑜𝑛/ℎ𝑟
0.25 ℎ𝑟 1000𝑘𝑔

𝑇 = 1.20(2.6296) = 3.1555 𝑡𝑜𝑛/ℎ𝑟

Use: Capacity = 3.2 tons/ hr

Specifications (ECI-PE-001) March 2018

3. Belt Width
According to Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook, 7th ed., p. 21-11, Table 21-7, the belt width
to be used with the computed capacity of 3.1555 ton/hr is

Use: Belt Width = 35 cm

4. Trough Width and Skirt Seal

For the belt width of 33cm, the trough width and skirt seal is determined by Fig. 21-4 of Perry’s
Chemical Engineering Handbook, 7th ed., p. 21-12

Use: Trough width = 23cm

Skirt seal = 5.1cm

5. Mass of Moving Parts

The approximate weight of the moving parts is 1.0 lb/in of width per running foot (Unit Operations,
Brown, p.57). The belt width of the conveyor is 14 in.
1𝑙𝑏/𝑖𝑛 𝑙𝑏 𝑘𝑔
𝑊= × 14 𝑖𝑛 = 14 = 20.83
𝑟𝑢𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑓𝑡 𝑚

Use: 21 kg

6. Belt Speed
According to Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook, 7th ed., p. 21-11, Table 21-7, the belt
speed to be used with the computed capacity of 3.1555 ton/hr is

Use: Belt speed = 30.5 m/min = 100 ft/min

7. Conveying time
The conveying time per cycle of the belt is calculated by,
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑟
𝑡𝑐 =
𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑
5.03 𝑚 60 𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝑡𝑐 = × = 9.9 𝑠𝑒𝑐
30.5 𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛 1 𝑚𝑖𝑛

So, cycle time of 10 seconds will be used.

For the conveying time,

𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑑
𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠−𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑
𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 = 𝑥 𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ

833.2 kg/m3
0.010 𝑚2 1𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑡𝑒𝑠𝑡 = 𝑥 10 sec 𝑥 = 3.14 𝑚𝑖𝑛
5.03 𝑚 60 𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝐔𝐬𝐞: 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕 = 𝟒 𝒎𝒊𝒏

8. Power Requirement
The power requirement is calculated by (Unit Operations, Brown, p. 57),
𝐹(𝐿 + 𝐿𝑜 )(𝑇 + 0.03𝑊𝑆) + 𝑇∆𝑧
𝑃=
990
Where,

P = power requirement, hp

F = friction factor (0.05 for plain bearings)

L = length of conveyor between terminal pulleys, ft

Lo = 100 for plain bearings

S = speed of belt, fpm

T = capacity of belt conveyor, ton/hr

∆z = increase in elevation of material, ft

W = mass of moving parts including belts and idlers per foot distance centers of terminal pulleys
(both runs), lb
𝑡𝑜𝑛 𝑙𝑏 𝑡𝑜𝑛
0.05(16.5026 𝑓𝑡 + 100) (3.2 + 0.03(14 )(100 𝑓𝑝𝑚) + (3.2 ) (1.8045𝑓𝑡)
ℎ𝑟 𝑓𝑡 ℎ𝑟
𝑃=
990
P = 0.27 hp

Use: 1.0 hp
