WelcometoElementaryJapanese!Japanese101and102isatwosemestercourse
(offeredintheFallandSpringsemesters,respectively)onthefundamentalsofmodernJapanese
withequalemphasisonspeaking,listening,reading,andwriting.Thiscourseisdividedinto
lectures(twohoursaweek)anddrillsections(threehoursaweek).Thelecturesintroduceand
explainnewgrammarpatterns;thedrillsectionsgiveyoutheopportunitiestopracticenew
languageskillsinreallifesituations.YouwillbetaughtbythreeJapaneseinstructorsthroughout
thecourse.

Youareexpectednotonlytobepresentbutalsotoactivelyparticipateinclass.

communicationalskills.
Please study for the quiz at home. Participation points will be deducted if you are

4. Homework Assignments
(1) LateAssignments:Yourcompletedhomeworkshouldbeturnedinatthebeginningof
classontheduedate,andyourhomeworkwillbegraded.Latenesswillbepenalized,and
thefollowingpointsareautomaticallydeductedfromtheoriginalfullscore:
When submitted within the day of the due date: 10%
When submitted within 3 days after the originally scheduled day: 30%
When submitted within 5 days after the originally scheduled day: 50%
No credit is given when an assignment is more than 5 days late.

vocabularyandusefulexpressions,andeventuallymasterthem.Makevocabularyand
Hiragana,KatakanaandKanjicardsifnecessary.
2.Previewthechaptertobecoveredbeforeclass.Youareexpectedtohavelistenedtothe
dialoguepartoftheaccompanyingCDwitheachlessonandmatchthecharacterlinesinthe
dialoguewithframesofthemanga(cartoon).Moreover,youshouldhavereadthelanguage
notesinyourtextbook.Afterthelecture,beforethefirstdrillsession,listentotheCDand
practicethedrillsandthedialogueagain.Then,indrillsessions,youwillpracticenewandold
grammarpatternsinreallifeconversation.Aftereachclass,reviewwiththeCDagain.Itis
veryimportantforyoutohavepracticedmechanicaldrillsoftenwiththeCDbeforedrill
sessionsbecauseinstructorsfocusoncreativedrillsratherthanmechanicalonesinclass.Your
understandingandsatisfactionindrillsessionsdependonhowmuchyoupracticethe
mechanicaldrillswiththeCDbeforethedrillsessions.

dialoguesanddrillsasmuchaspossible.Ifyoulistentotheaudiosconsistentlyandpracticein
anorganizedmanner,theendresultcanberewarding.Youmayfinditmorefruitfultogofor
twoshorterperiodsthanforonelongone.

1. Speak.Donotjustpassivelylisten.
2. Usethepauseandrewindbuttons.DonotjustlettheCDrunoncontinuously.
3. Developgoodstudyhabits.Setupadailystudytimetableandsticktoit.
4. SpendatleastthirtyminutestoonehoureverydayworkingontheCDs.

Neverreadthetranslationpartfirst.
2.Listentothedialogueandstopyourmachinetocheckthatyouunderstandwhathasbeen
said.Lookatthelanguageandvocabularylistifyouencounternewanddifficultwordsor
patterns.Lastly,imitatetheconversationafterthevoiceonthetapeuntilyoucan
sayitfluently.
