JPN101ElementaryJapanese
CourseSyllabus

WelcometoElementaryJapanese!Japanese101and102isatwosemestercourse
(offeredintheFallandSpringsemesters,respectively)onthefundamentalsofmodernJapanese
withequalemphasisonspeaking,listening,reading,andwriting.Thiscourseisdividedinto
lectures(twohoursaweek)anddrillsections(threehoursaweek).Thelecturesintroduceand
explainnewgrammarpatterns;thedrillsectionsgiveyoutheopportunitiestopracticenew
languageskillsinreallifesituations.YouwillbetaughtbythreeJapaneseinstructorsthroughout
thecourse.

whichyouhavetomakeminimalsuppositionsandtowhichyoubringpersonalinterest
and/orknowledge.

messagespostcards,andtakingdownsimplenotes.

astudentactivitiesmanualandthePremiumWebSitePrintedAccessCard.Itisavailableat
Labyrinthbookstore.JPN101willcovermaterialthroughchapter8.

2.Foryourpersonalstudies,thefollowingreferencebooksareavailableatUniversity
bookstore.Thesearenotrequired,butstronglyrecommended.

III.CourseRequirements

1. Attendance and Participation


Attendingclassontimeeverydayismandatory.Thefirst2absenceswithoutlegitimateexcuses
willnotaffectyourgrade.However,afterthat,everytimeyoumissclassesyouwilllose1%
outof 10%fromyourattendance.Ifyoucometoclassover10minuteslatethreetimes,your
lateattendancewillbecountedasoneabsence.Onlywhenyouhaveavalidlegitimatereason
(e.g.,conference,jobinterview,illness,etc.)willyoubeexcusedfromattendingclass.
However,insuchcases,contactSatoinadvancebyemailorphone.Also,youmustsubmita
writtennoteinwhichyouindicatethereasonoftheabsence(inthecaseofsickness,youcan
submitthenoteafterwardswiththedoctornote).

Yourclassroombehaviorwillbeevaluatedbyyourinstructorsonthebasisofthefollowing
criteria.
(1) Comingtoclassontime
(2) MinimumuseofEnglishinclass
(3) Preparationforclass(suchasreadingthetextbook)isyourresponsibility.
(4) Activeparticipation:
Youareexpectednotonlytobepresentbutalsotoactivelyparticipateinclass.
Doyourbestespeciallytospeakandlisteninclassroom.
ClasstimeisagoodchancetousewhatyoulearnedandtodevelopyourJapanese
communicationalskills.
Please study for the quiz at home. Participation points will be deducted if you are
studying for the quiz during class time. Dont miss valuable opportunities for listening
and speaking Japanese!

4. Homework Assignments
(1) LateAssignments:Yourcompletedhomeworkshouldbeturnedinatthebeginningof
classontheduedate,andyourhomeworkwillbegraded.Latenesswillbepenalized,and
thefollowingpointsareautomaticallydeductedfromtheoriginalfullscore:
When submitted within the day of the due date: 10%
When submitted within 3 days after the originally scheduled day: 30%
When submitted within 5 days after the originally scheduled day: 50%
No credit is given when an assignment is more than 5 days late.

(3) LabActivities:You may access the Japanese 101 audio files from
the Premium Website. In order to access the site, you need to have the Premium Web Site
Printed Access Card.

5. Quizzes and Exams


Tests or quizzes may be made up only when you have a legitimate reason (i.e., conference, job
interview, illness, family emergency, etc) with dated official proof for the need to change the
schedule. However, in such case, you must contact Sato in advance to make arrangements for
your make-up quiz/test.
If there is no legitimate reason (or if you did not inform your instructor in advance, or if you did
not submit proof of the necessity to change a quiz/test properly), you can still make up a
quiz/test, but the following points are automatically deducted from the original full score:
When the makeup is taken within the day that the test was administered: 50%
When taken within 3 days after the originally scheduled day: 80%
No make-up is allowed after 3 days from the originally scheduled day

YouareexpectedtostudyJapaneseapproximatelybetweenoneandahalfandtwohours
everydaytofulfillthecourserequirement.Wearesurethatyouwilldevelopyourownmethod
soon,butwewouldliketooffersomesuggestionsonhowtostudyJapanese:

1.Reviewconstantly.Gobacktotheearlierlessonsfromtimetotimetorefreshyourmemory.
Bygoingbacktotheearlierlessonsfrequentlyyouwillbecomemorefamiliarwiththe

vocabularyandusefulexpressions,andeventuallymasterthem.Makevocabularyand
Hiragana,KatakanaandKanjicardsifnecessary.

2.Previewthechaptertobecoveredbeforeclass.Youareexpectedtohavelistenedtothe
dialoguepartoftheaccompanyingCDwitheachlessonandmatchthecharacterlinesinthe
dialoguewithframesofthemanga(cartoon).Moreover,youshouldhavereadthelanguage
notesinyourtextbook.Afterthelecture,beforethefirstdrillsession,listentotheCDand
practicethedrillsandthedialogueagain.Then,indrillsessions,youwillpracticenewandold
grammarpatternsinreallifeconversation.Aftereachclass,reviewwiththeCDagain.Itis
veryimportantforyoutohavepracticedmechanicaldrillsoftenwiththeCDbeforedrill
sessionsbecauseinstructorsfocusoncreativedrillsratherthanmechanicalonesinclass.Your
understandingandsatisfactionindrillsessionsdependonhowmuchyoupracticethe
mechanicaldrillswiththeCDbeforethedrillsessions.

V.AudioFiles
1.GeneralGuidelines
ItisimportanttobeexposedtoJapanesesoundsasmuchaspossible.Officehourvisitsand
languagetableparticipationarenotenough.UsetheCDsthatcomewiththetextbook,orusethe
PremiumWebsite(SeeLabActivitiesonpage3).Alsolistentothe
dialoguesanddrillsasmuchaspossible.Ifyoulistentotheaudiosconsistentlyandpracticein
anorganizedmanner,theendresultcanberewarding.Youmayfinditmorefruitfultogofor
twoshorterperiodsthanforonelongone.

2.GeneralRulesofThumb
1. Speak.Donotjustpassivelylisten.
2. Usethepauseandrewindbuttons.DonotjustlettheCDrunoncontinuously.
3. Developgoodstudyhabits.Setupadailystudytimetableandsticktoit.
4. SpendatleastthirtyminutestoonehoureverydayworkingontheCDs.

3.Dialogue
1.TheCDcomesfirst.Listentoeachconversationbeforeyoulookatthetextbook.
Neverreadthetranslationpartfirst.
2.Listentothedialogueandstopyourmachinetocheckthatyouunderstandwhathasbeen
said.Lookatthelanguageandvocabularylistifyouencounternewanddifficultwordsor
patterns.Lastly,imitatetheconversationafterthevoiceonthetapeuntilyoucan
sayitfluently.
