At the beginning of Lent, we changed a part of the liturgy. At the sending, when we usually hear
something like, God in peace and respond, Thanks be to God, the liturgist said, By grace
have you been saved through faith; to which we responded, and this is not our own doing,
but the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast.
Why the change? Where did that saying come from? I am glad you asked!
The verses come from Pauls letter to the Ephesians, chapter 2, verses 8 and 9. We said them be-
cause Bishop Daniel Beaudoin, the NW Ohio Bishop of the ELCA, asked us to memorize the verses. Bishop
Beaudoin has named the Year 2017 the Year of Grace. In order to help us remember the verses, I decided to
add it at the end of worship. This change, though raises a good question for us: Why the same thing every
week in worship?
Did you ever wonder why we sing some of the same songs, and go through the same rituals every week in
worship? Lets take a look at our liturgy and see what we do every week:
Confession and Forgiveness, or Thanksgiving for Baptism (during Lent), while facing the baptismal
font.
Gathering Hymn
Kyrie (with Hymn of Praise)
Prayer of the Day
The readings (Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle, Gospel)
Homily
Hymn of the Day
Creed
Prayers
Sharing of the Peace
Offerings and Offertory Prayer
Holy Communion (sometimes called Eucharist, or Lords Supper)
Post Communion Canticle with a Post Communion Prayer
Benediction
Closing Hymn
Sending
That looks like a lot of work! Indeed, that is what liturgy means, the work of the people. Gods people
need this time of holy work in order to reconnect ourselves with God, or sometimes just to remind us that
we are already plugged in! Thats why we gather first at the baptismal font, where we all were joined to
Christ, and confess or give thanks. We need that time to shake off all of the stuff that has kept us from fol-
lowing Jesus throughout the week. There at the baptismal font, at the beginning of worship, we prepare our
minds and hearts to focus on God.

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM

All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns
or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and encourage you
to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropriate. In turn,
we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and
confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He
wants to know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best re-
source within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge. Deacons are not exempt from having a dea-
con of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly
meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation.
Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pas-
tor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zions Lutheran Church and we encour-
age you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.
