network operators (MNOs) are turning to Siemens for solutions. With years of
real-world, cost-cutting experience to its credit and thousands of installations
worldwide providing reliable performance for some of the worlds largest
carriers, the SURPASS hiD 3100 platform is the discerning MNOs solution of
choice.
Making the most of radio
access networks

Think complete. Care for detail.
Siemens Communications Mobile Networks
A single cost-effective solution for
UMTS, GPRS and GSM
3G networks are here and flourishing as
established 2G/2.5G mobile networks,
devoted to voice or data services, con-
tinue to grow. Today transport lease
fees may account for as much as 20% of
operating expense, or up to half of capital
expenditures may go to building your
own radio access transport. In both cases,
lowering costs and accommodating ad-
ditional traffic from new 3G or expanding
2G/2.5G services is critical. Siemens can
help you do this with SURPASS hiD 3100,
a range of future-proof multi-service
switches that streamlines access in your
GSM/GPRS/UMTS radio networks.
UMTS operators with established ATM
transport are familiar with the statistical
multiplexing of ATM aggregation. They
know it helps significantly reduce OPEX
by concentrating many underutilized E1s
into fewer and more bandwidth-efficient
links. And they know that by consolidat-
ing traffic into highly economical STM-1
trunks, they can economize scarce and
costly RNC ports. Hence SURPASS hiD
3100 is widely deployed in UMTS access
networks, where it cuts operating ex-
penses up to 30%.
Optimizing legacy GSM or GPRS traffic
onto 3GPP-standardized ATM transport
makes good business sense because it
lets MNOs converge highly economical
E1s of both 2G and 3G services onto the
ATM backhaul at almost no extra cost.
And forward-looking GSM/GPRS opera-
tors planning to deploy UMTS in the fore-
seeable future and seeking to conserve
bandwidth in legacy transport networks
would prefer to do this at little or no
marginal cost using a future-ready net-
work infrastructure.
Pay only for what you really use
SURPASS hiD 3100 serves to dynamically
adapt bandwidth resource consumption
to customers changing usage patterns.
With a unique optimizing functionality
that eliminates unnecessary data on BTS-
to-BSC Abis interfaces, or the BSC-to-
MSC Asub/Ater interface, SURPASS hiD
3100 lets you realize significant band-
width savings on incoming TDM links.
Why pay for hauling silence frames, un-
used channels or superfluous patterns
if these can be eliminated without com-
promising voice quality, while economiz-
ing up to 40% bandwidth?
Unrivalled service flexibility
The SURPASS hiD 3100 family of multi-
service switches comprises three fully
modular carrier-grade systems: Boasting
25-Gbps switching capacity, hiD 3140
High Speed accommodates 11 service
cards. The hiD 3140 and 3120 platforms
support 2-Gbps switching capacity and
accommodate 11 and five service cards,
respectively.
Benefits at a glance
Tremendous economizing power at
ultra-high density of up to 693 E1 ports
per chassis and up to six chassis per
standard rack
Up to 30% OPEX savings in the UTRAN
by aggregating many underutilized
E1s into fewer fully utilized links and
using channelized mode to reduce
STM-1 links in the SDH network
Dramatic OPEX savings in the GERAN
by reducing bandwidth demand by up
to 50% in Abis and Asub/Ater inter-
faces: Statistical multiplexing via pack-
etized compression enables significant
Abis interface overbooking
No adverse impact on voice quality and
minimal added Abis delay
Simplified RAN transport: one network
for both 2G & 3G traffic
Less RNC hardware (interface cards,
power supplies, controllers, etc) cuts
CAPEX
No-single-point-of-failure architecture
practically eliminates network down-
time. With fully redundant control,
switching, and services, SURPASS hiD
3100 supports network level rerouting,
hot insertion for all components, and
in-service software upgrades
