WRITING ESSAY QUESTIONS

Essay types of questioned is used to develop writing skills. It is a time consuming free response type of questioned. Measures ability to organize, integrate and express ideas and develops HOT (analysis, synthesis and evaluation) of the learner being tested. Only it does not provide adequate sampling of learning outcomes, scoring tends to be subjective, unreliable and time consuming. Thus poor handwriting, grammar errors, and misspelled words cover the grades.

PRINCIPLES TO BE FOLLOWED IN CONSTRUCTING ESSAY QUESTION. 1. State the question that require clear, specific and narrow task of the topic to be performed. 2. Give enough time limits for answering each question. 3. Requires all students to answer all questions. 4. Make it clear to students if spelling, punctuation, content, clarity and style are to be considered in scoring the essay questions. When the items are clear and specific the items become valid. 5. Grade each essay question by point method using well-defined criteria e.g. A, B, C, or 1, 2, 3, 6. Evaluate all of the students response to one question before going to the next question. 7. Evaluate answers to essay question without classifying the student. Better to used code number assign to each student. 8. If possible two or more corrector must be employed to ensure reliability of the results. 9. Considers the level of the test takers.
