Quick Start Guide

Use this guide to get started with a basic installation for IBM Information Server.

National language version: To obtain the Quick Start Guide in other languages, access the PDF files on the Quick Start CD.

Product overview
IBM® Information Server enables companies to understand, cleanse, transform, and deliver trustworthy and context-rich
information.
Before you begin any installation or upgrade, it is good practice to back up your system, especially your critical data.
For the most recent information, see the release notes at publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iisinfsv/v8r1/topic/
com.ibm.swg.im.iis.productization.iisinfsv.relinfo.doc/topics/cont_infsrv_rnote.html

1 Step 1: Access your software

If you download your product from IBM Passport Advantage®, follow the directions in the download document at
www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=14&uid=swg24019020.
The installation program can install each the following product modules, depending on your license: IBM WebSphere®
DataStage™, IBM WebSphere QualityStage, IBM WebSphere Information Analyzer, IBM WebSphere Business Glossary,
IBM Information Server Business Glossary Anywhere, IBM Metadata Workbench, IBM Information Server FastTrack, and
IBM WebSphere Information Services Director. All installations include the common services and repository licensed as
IBM WebSphere Metadata Server.

2 Step 2: Evaluate your hardware and system configuration

See the detailed system requirements document at www.ibm.com/software/data/integration/info_server/overview/
? requirements.html.

3 Step 3: Review the installation topology

The following diagram shows the topology for an installation that is distributed across two computers. For information
about alternate topologies, see the IBM Information Server Planning, Installation, and Configuration Guide. The PDF
documentation can be installed in any location. The information center always is installed as a common service.

Computer B
Windows Server 2003, Linux, or UNIX

repository (common and product-specific)
4 Step 4: Install the modules and components
Install the services, metadata repository, and engine tiers on computer B and install the client tier on computer A. For a
complete installation of a product module and its components, you must select the product module when you install each
tier. For example, to install WebSphere DataStage, select WebSphere DataStage on the Product selection panel in the
wizard when you install the services, repository, and engine tiers on computer B and also when you install the client tier
on computer A.
1. Log in to computer B. Log in as an administrator or as a user with root privileges and disable the firewall and antivirus
software. (It is not necessary to turn off the antivirus software, but it might improve performance of the installation.)
2. Run the installation program from the root directory of the installation media. Select the metadata repository, services,
and engine tiers. Select all of the product modules for which you have a license.
3. After the installation is complete, start the firewall and antivirus software.
4. Log in to computer A. Log in as an administrator or as a user with root privileges and disable the firewall and antivirus
software.
5. Run the installation program from the root directory of the installation media. Select the client tier. Select the products
for which you have a license. Note that only products that have client applications are listed. Products that have Web
clients are not listed because Web clients are installed as part of the services tier. For more details, see the information
about the client tier in the IBM Information Server Planning, Installation, and Configuration Guide.
6. After the installation is complete, start the firewall and antivirus software and restart computer A.

5 Step 5: Configure user access

New installations of IBM Information Server use an internal user registry. To configure IBM Information Server to use an
external registry such as LDAP, see the IBM Information Server Administration Guide. The IBM Information Server
Administration Guide also explains how to create users and groups, how to assign security roles, and how to establish
credential mappings for the IBM Information Server engine.

6 Step 6: Configure the product modules

See the IBM Information Server Planning, Installation, and Configuration Guide and the related documentation for each product
module for information about configuring the product modules.

7 Step 7: Configure the engine

IBM WebSphere DataStage, WebSphere QualityStage, and WebSphere Information Analyzer use the IBM Information
Server engine. The IBM Information Server Planning, Installation, and Configuration Guide contains details about environment
settings, kernel parameters, paging space, heap size, and other required configuration settings.
