Robinson Middle School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Hello and welcome to _____ grade math. My name is Alexandra Savage and I will be your
childs math teacher for the 2016-2017 academic school year. I wanted to introduce myself
and our math department. At the bottom the end of this letter, you will see the math
classroom policy, classroom procedures, required materials, expected behaviors, grading and
homework policy, and discipline plan. To help your child stay up to date on work, check their
planners regularly. Also, students grades can be checked on powerschool. Progress reports
will be sent home every 9 weeks . Please look them over with your child, and then sign and
return them.
A little background of myself: I graduated from James Madison University with a Masters in
teaching and a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in pre-professional middle
education. I was on the Division 1 Varsity diving team for four years. I loved Virginia, but there
is no place like Texas!
I am very excited for the opportunity to getting to know each student. My goal is to know
every student and their need. If you have any questions or concerns of your childs progress
please feel free to email, call, or set up a conference with me at any time. I will look forward
to see you at the Open House on September 15, 2016 at 7:00 pm.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Savage

Mathematics Grade 6 Classroom Policies

Ms. Savage- Room ____
Welcome to middle school! I think ___ grade is one of the most exciting school years because
all four elementary schools merge into one. It is a great time for students to make new friends and find
new interests.
I look forward to getting to know each of you this year and learning more about COOL
math(science) with you. This year we will focus on _________ and ___________.
1. Behavior:
When in my room and at (insert school here), remember to always RESPECT. That means..

Each of you will be expected to treat yourself with RESPECT, your peers, the teacher, and the learning

We will be going over what entails what kind of respect for each circumstance.
2.

Preparation:
Materials: The following materials will be needed for class.
Class Supplies: loose-leaf, tissues, glue sticks (list distributed in summer)
Individual Supplies: binder 1 , dividers, highlighters, colored pencils/pens depending on subject,
scissors
Students are expected to bring their binder, pencil, colored pens, and planner to class DAILY.
Please remind them to check their planner each night so their homework is completed and they are
prepared for the next day.
Beginning of class: You are expected to enter the classroom quietly. Once you sit down, you
are to write down the homework in your planner! You should then, complete the warm-up that
is shown on the smart-board.
Extra help: You are welcome to come for extra help before school, during lunch, and after
school. Students can come during Power 30 for extra help, turn in missing work, or update
notes in their binder. You can also schedule a time to come during my home room as well.
There is an after school tutoring program offered at (school name) for students who need extra
help completing work.
3. Grading Scale:
*Grading Scale is based on the Frisco Independent School District.
A: 90-100%
B: 80-89%
C: 70-79%
F: Below 70

In addition, the following "point" system will be used for participation points as
well as some classwork/ homework grades:
+ = 100
= 80
=
60
(A combination may also be used, such as /+ = 90 or /- = 70)
4. Evaluation/Grading Policy: You will be evaluated according to the following criteria.

Homework 10%: Students will have two freebies, without penalty per semester. I understand life
happens, and students are busy with outside things. However, on the 3rd late homework assignment
students will lose participation points.
Try It homework checked for completion ONLY.
***Homework is a valuable tool to succeed in math. It will only be used to reinforce
ALREADY LEARNED material when needed. Students are expected to complete homework
for the next day for it is important to build upon previously learned material for new material.
Homework will be graded on completion. Homework will sometimes be collected in bins or
checked by teacher that day while the students are doing the warm-up.
*Note: If participation assignments such as homework, are not prepared for the day, students will work
on the homework instead of participating in homework review. Students are expected to participate inclass activities for the day and work collaboratively with group numbers. If failure to do so, will result in
a phone call home and a comment on their report card.
Other Participation 10%:
Warm-up bell ringer
Work Habits: turning in homework, classwork. and projects late.
Students Involvement in in-school activities, labor in groups, and peer evaluation on projects.
Interactive-Notebook checks
Class Work 20%: Assignments covering previously learning material.
Students will be given in-class activities to informally and formally assess students understanding of
the material. It will also be used to catch misconceptions. All students are expected to participate in
class. Participating in note-taking is part of the classroom experience. The notes can be used on
quizzes to reinforce concepts appropriately.
Projects 15%: There will be two projects to be completed in-class. Students will be informed when
and what they will be doing, and their expectations. Students will receive a group grade, individual
grade, and a former evaluation on peers that will be counted for participation points.
Quizzes 15%: A quiz will be given to assess a standard or two in preparation for the Unit test.
Students are allowed to use notes on their quiz in order to correctly reinforce concepts. This will help
measure students understanding.
Graded Tests/ Performance Assessments 30%: Around one or two are given each nine weeks. A test
and or performance assessment will be given at the end of a unit to measure students mastery. Tests
are taken independently. Using notes or talking will be considered cheating and students will receive a
zero.

a.
b.
c.
d.

Test correction policy: Students will be able to make test corrections no matter what score they
receive on the test. The students can earn up to a point on each question they correctly fix.
Students can use their notes and or make a conference with me to go over any problems or concepts
they need help on. This will help reinforce concepts correctly. Students can make up corrections:
During class if I give time
Before or After School
During homeroom or power 30
At home ** (but not relying on this method)
Test retake policy: Students will be able to retake a test no matter what grade they received. We will
have time in class to go over their mistakes and fix them, and also can come see me before or after
school, during lunch, homeroom, or power 30.

5. Late work: You are encouraged to turn in all assignments on time. This gives you a chance to
practice the material you already learned in class in order to increase progress. It also is a way for
both you and the teacher to check for understanding. Late work is accepted for classwork, projects,
and tests. NOT HOMEWORK.(unless using one of your freebies).
Points deducted for late work will be deduced from participation (work habits). It will not harm
the student's academic grade on the assignment. Points deducted for late work:
Late 1 day: 5%
Late 2-4 days: 15%
Late 5 days or more: 25%
All late work must be turned in by the end of the grading period each nine weeks.
In grade book:
Empty box-grade not entered yet.
MIS- assignment is missing (absent).
LATE-missing and not turn in on time.
6. Interactive Notebook (INB): Each student will have a 1-inch 3 ring binder that will be used to build
organizational skills for a participation grade. Notebooks were checked before every tests. The
notebook will have three sections:
Warm-up: where students will keep their warm-up sheets that they are given on Monday to complete
each day for the rest of the week
Notes: This is where students will put their guided notes.
Classwork/Homework: This is where students will put classwork such as handouts and or homework.
The folder part of the binder will be used for returned papers.

7. Absences: Students are responsible to stay on top of their make-up work. If students are absent
they should take the following steps upon returning back to class the next day:
1. Go to While You Were Out wall in the classroom

2. Right under it look at the folder that is labeled with your Block on it, take the missing sheets with your
name on them.
3. Check with classmates to fill in the missing notes or Ms. Savages notes if not filled in.
4. Check with Ms. Savage for additional updates.
5. Turn in your completed work in your blocks bin.
8. Extra Credit: I do not believe in extra credit, however, I do offer students opportunities to further
their learning. if student receives a low grade on an assessment, he or she may retake it or make test
corrections to try for a higher grade in order to best demonstrate mastery of the material.
