2 (NME-302)
1) A close-coiled helical spring is of 80 mm mean coil diameter. The spring extends by 37.75mm
when loaded axially by a weight of 500N. There is an angular rotation of 45 when this spring is
subjected to an axial couple magnitude 20Nm. Determine the Poissons ratio for material of the
spring.
2) A leaf spring 1m long has 8 plates 75 mm wide & 8mm thick. Assuming E= 2*10 5 N/mm2 ,
determine the maximum safe load that can be applied on the spring. The maximum deflection
must not exceed 25mm & the maximum bending stress is limited to 157.5 N/mm2
3) Find the maximum principal stress developed in a cylindrical shaft 8cm in diameter &
subjected to a bending moment of 2.5kNm & a twisting moment of 4.2 kNm. If the yield stress
of the shaft material is 300Mpa , determine the factor of safety of the shaft according to the
maximum shearing stress theory of failure.
4) A steel rod, 12 mm in diameter is welded to a rigid plate that is supported by a brass pipe
whose outside diameter is 30mm & inside diameter is 20mm, as shown in the figure . If P=50kN,
Es=210 GN/m2 & Eb = 105 GN/m2 , determine:
(1)The displacement of point A.
(2) The stresses in steel & brass.

6) A solid shaft in a rolling mill transmits 20kW at 2Hz. Determine the diameter of the shaft if
the shearing stress is not to exceed 40Mpa & angle of twist is limited to 6 in a length of 3 m.
Use G= 83 Gpa.
7) A close- coiled helical spring whose free length when not compressed is 15cm is required to
absorb strain energy equal to 50Nm when fully compressed with the coils in contact. The
maximum shearing stress is limited to 140 Mpa. Assuming a mean coil diameter of 10cm, find
the diameter of the steel wire required & no. of coils. G = 80 GPa.
