How about we come up with a safe, cost-effective and eco-friendly way to prevent perineal tearing during childbirth? Oh look, our students just did 👏 That and more student-driven solutions engineered to address underfunded areas in women's health pitched at Velocity's FemTech Innovation Challenge — read on!
In partnership with Velocity and Femtech Canada, the University of Waterloo recently hosted the FemTech Innovation Challenge, welcoming alum and Hyivy Health founder Rachel Bartholomew (MBET ’14) as a mentor and collaborator. This challenge spurred student teams to address underfunded areas in women’s health—particularly menopause, gynecological health, and childbirth. The winning team, PeriGuard, presented an innovative device to support women during childbirth, offering a safe, reusable way to prevent perineal tearing through controlled heat application. Their work is pioneering, highlighting how forward-thinking design can alleviate common birthing challenges.
