Established in 1990, Engineering Outreach at the University of Waterloo engages young people in the world of STEM.
About us
Our mission is to engage young people in the world of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), by igniting their natural curiosity and cultivating a commitment to lifelong learning, discovery and invention. We do this by offering high-quality programming that 1) demonstrates theories and principles through hands- on activities, 2) is developed and delivered by current university students who are eager to share their passion, and 3) makes use of over 30 years of experience. We offer various programs that are designed for youth in grades 1 to 12. One of our main priorities is to create opportunities for youth who have historically underrepresented in STEM fields. This includes but is not limited to Black youth, girls and non-binary youth, Indigenous youth, newcomers to Canada, youth facing socioeconomic disadvantages and youth with disabilities. We proudly partner with school boards, community organizations, non-profits, industry, governments and sponsors to develop and deliver programming. There are many opportunities to get involved. Please reach out to [email protected] or (519)615-3444 ext. 46944 if you have any questions.

🎉Congratulations to Dr. Muñoz on this exciting opportunity! 🎉 Dr. Muñoz has been a longstanding Games Institute member ever since his postdoctoral days, and has presented his research work in guest lectures, seminars, and workshops (some of which have been held here at the GI!). One of his latest workshops was held in collaboration with Engineering Outreach, University of Waterloo at the GI for the "VR Creators Launchpad" which had two enthusiastic groups of children assemble their own #VR headsets and engage directly with the technology. With the support of the wider GI community, Dr. Muñoz has also started his own company, Body Interface Labs, which seeks to lead innovation in integrating adaptive #biofeedback into gaming and digital applications. 🎉 Congratulations again, John! We look forward to the work you'll do with our neighbours down the street, Wilfrid Laurier University. Assistant Professor, Wilfrid Laurier University. Physiological Computing and UX Researcher, Game Designer
I am excited to share that I have joined the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University at Brantford as an Assistant Professor. This new chapter opens up incredible opportunities to contribute to the field of User Experience Design (UXD) in both teaching and research. I am particularly looking forward to continuing exploring the fascinating applications of Virtual Reality (VR) for de-escalation training with the criminology department at Laurier and bringing my research on physiological computing, serious games for health, and games in human-robot interaction. And, as if that was not exciting enough, I will be joining a recently launched Master’s program in UXD, which will offer a dynamic space for future innovators to grow and thrive. The possibilities at the Faculty of Liberal Arts are truly exciting for this moment in my career, and I cannot wait to collaborate with colleagues (including some very talented researchers such as Dr. Abby Goodrum and Maurita T. Harris), students, and industry partners to continue this career journey. Special thanks to: Jennifer A. A. Lavoie for all her support on this application. Here’s to new beginnings and exciting discoveries ahead! 🚀 #UXDesign #VirtualReality #HigherEducation #Research #Laurier #FacultyOfLiberalArts #Innovation

Woohoo!! The Engineering Outreach, University of Waterloo team has won gold for its Travelling STEM program at the 2024 Council for Advancement and Support of Education Circle of Excellence awards 🎉 Launched in 2023, the program is specifically designed to reach Indigenous youth, who are currently underrepresented as students in STEM fields at the post-secondary level, to help ensure that they are included in Canada’s technological future. Funded in part by the Ontario government and in partnership with industry partner Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Travelling STEM’s pilot phase reached 11 Indigenous communities and engaged with 276 students over 17 workshops. “One of my favourite parts of being involved with this program was seeing its impact across many different communities,” said Naomi Paul, a Waterloo Engineering PhD student and Outreach instructor. “With each trip and workshop, we saw students develop interests in areas of STEM that were new to them."
