Yes, burnout is real!
Hi, how was your week?
On Wednesday we ran a special edition exploring one of the most worrying workplace trends of 2024: burnout. I spoke with psychologists and “professional wellbeing” professionals (they’re a thing) to discover why burnout is affecting so many workers, and what strategies individuals and companies can put in place to help.
My virtual mailbag exploded, with scores of wonderful messages from business owners and operators explaining how they are navigating/struggling/surviving burnout too.
If you messaged, thank you, I hope I’ve responded and if I haven’t yet I will do it this weekend. If you have a story or perspective to share, please email me at screrar@smartcompany.com.au
If you are suffering burnout, you are not alone.
My view is that the best way to address a problem is to articulate it, and then seek help.
We hope these articles help a little, but also, reach out if you need to talk!
Thanks for spending your time with SmartCompany this week. It’s our honour to serve you.
Now, log off and hug a tree!

5moI know it’s real! I suffered burn-out about 15 years ago. I’ve since learned (after becoming strengths coach) that I have two talents (Responsibility and Achiever) that Gallup call the “Burnout” talents - if not kept in check. Knowing I have these talents, and how to aim them for good, and to minimise the ‘burn-out’ behaviour has been a life changer for me. It also helps me coach others prone to burn-out. I have so many tips and tricks I can share. What I do know - you can manage this, when you know your talents that are combining to create the situation in the first place. Understanding yourself is the key.
