Why Are You Still Solstice "Mobile"?

Why Are You Still Solstice "Mobile"?

I had a friend ask me the other day why we were still branded as Solstice "Mobile". His argument was perhaps the Mobile moniker was limiting since we were building products across the digital ecosystem (handsets, big browser, IoT devices, displays, wearables, etc.).  My answer was that I believe the definition of mobile has evolved and the name holds true to the types of products we build and what we believe. Here was my explanation:

I believe mobile is no longer simply a descriptor for apps that live on handsets and tablets. Mobile is about the user. It’s about computing in context of the user's environment. It’s about providing individuals with the right information, at the right time, on the right screen; and in many cases, before they even know to ask for it. It combines the capabilities of natural user interfaces (touch, motion, voice and VR) with prescriptive analytics and artificial intelligence to create an entirely new type of human-computer interaction.

I believe, in the digital world, mobile is no longer a noun (describing phones or tablets). Mobile is about being mobile. It’s about being free to experience the intersection of the physical and digital worlds from any location, on any screen, in any situation. It is, in essence, the future of computing. Mobile is the one word that describes how humanity will inevitably consume, produce and radiate any and all relevant information. In the digital customer experience (CX) world, mobile. . . is everything.

What do you think? Has the definition of "mobile" evolved in your opinion?  Does it define the future, or the past? I would love to hear your perspective in the comments below.

Great description of why "mobile" Jay! I like your courage to modify the meaning and then owning the modification. Innovation comes in many ways, the branding that comes along with owning this is awesome!

When I explained to people that I worked for Solstice Mobile they always thought it was a mobile phone carrier, like T-Mobile. Although confusing, it was a means to open a discussion of the actual focus of the company.

Agreed! Mobile is no longer about the "channel". In today's age, it is about enabling the customer wherever and whenever they need access to content and/or services. The physical medium could be anything from old school SMS to mobile apps or websites and everything in the middle.

Human nature is about being mobile. People typically move around a lot (physically and mentally) in their day and life for that matter. Having applications that are custom-designed and developed for you as you go through your day (making you more efficient, effective and productive) have an intrinsic value that is hard to quantify, other than they are important. And once you stop moving... you stop growing. That said, I like the mobile moniker!!
