Why it Matters to Take a Positive, Constructive Approach to a Lack of Marketing Success.
I love tennis. It's a passion, along with hockey (ice, not field!).
When I was playing with a friend yesterday, there was a father and son practicing on the next court.
The boy, who's probably 10 or 11, was pounding the ball. So good at such a young age!
While I was leaving the court, I told the father that I was impressed with how his son played.
Rather than acknowledge my compliment, the father said, "He's lazy. He could be much better."
Needless to say, I was taken aback.
It got me thinking about how we should provide people with feedback about their performance.
While everyone tries to do the right things, they're not always successful. Things go wrong for many reasons.
But when success doesn't happen, the response as managers should be constructive and focused on improvements, while ensuring that people understand what went wrong.
It's an approach to develop team and help them perform better or differently. It's a much more effective way that being negative and emphasizing mistakes first.
I'm not suggesting that bad performances shouldn't be addressed. But I think that good managers should focus on growth and helping people learn from their mistakes.
