WHAT TO DO WITH INTRINSICALLY NEGATIVE PEOPLE?

WHAT TO DO WITH INTRINSICALLY NEGATIVE PEOPLE?

This Newsletter has four parts:

  1. Intrinsically NEGATIVE: What to do with such people?

  2. NETFLIX engineered word of mouth, done right. Check out Vikas Chawla post

  3. Mosquitoes and their fear (?) of heights: A short snippet from the world of quirky research.

  4. The Joy of Creation: A 1.5 minute audio note

ONE: INTRINSICALLY NEGATIVE: WHAT TO DO WITH THEM?

What to do with the Intrinsically negative?

There are two types of motivations.

  • Intrinsic: that you use to fuel yourself. The energy comes from within.

  • Extrinsic: when someone uses the carrot and stick routine. And you rely more on external forces to work or perform.

But this article isn't about motivation. It's about dealing with the 'intrinsically negative'—those who always spot the dark cloud behind every silver lining.

Such people are:

Negative

Bickering

Bitching

Criticizing

Judging

Negating

You will know them immediately in any crowd. You can sense them and hear them. They are oddly compelling - if you aren't careful.

So, what must you do immediately?

RUN AWAY!

Seriously.

Such people will suck you into their world, bait you into responding to personal attacks, bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

You will find them at your workplace negating all new ideas or directions.

They will appear at social gatherings using bitching as a magnet to build a crowd around themselves.

You have only one choice.

The only option you have is to treat it like drugs.

Say no the first time.

Say no every time.

Protect your mental bandwidth.

Stay away from such people.

Save your sanity. Your creativity. Your positivity.

Build a positive circle around you.

Surround yourself with those who challenge you—but in a way that lifts you higher. Constructive critique? Yes.

Constant negation? Run away.

Your creativity, your positivity, and your sanity - deserve better.

TWO: MOVIES AND POPCORN

A match made in heaven.

Some of us still pay through our noses for this experience!

Here is Vikas Chawla’s article on what Netflix has done - come out with their own popcorn.

Vikas spoke about it. I liked it and am now writing about it. When you see this post, you will be tempted to do two things.

  1. Read it and talk about it - spread the word.

  2. You will either go out and buy this popcorn to surprise your family, OR include it in your next purchase, OR, the biggest one yet - your subconscious has been seeded. When you find this near the cash counter, you will go for it!. Engineered word of mouth, done right. Check out Vikas’ post.

THREE: MOSQUITOES AND RESEARCH!

Paraphrasing the words of John Smurthwaite:

Question from Pravin: Now, I would want you to put on your storyteller hat because I'm on a quest to collect episodes of unintended consequences. We research, we develop a product for something the customer uses for something else. We go into the field to research something, but something new comes out of it, which sometimes the clients may not like or may find it amusing.

John: One of the earliest ones that I was amused at and learned something about listening to other people was in Singapore when we were working for Reckitt and Coleman, as they were called then.

We were doing a study on mosquitoes. We found that about half the population in the HDB apartments were affected by mosquitoes and half weren't.

We couldn't work out why was this!

So we analysed everything by age and ethnicity and education, and we just couldn't find it out.

Finally, I was talking to one of the interviewers who'd been on the project, and I was saying, we're having a problem working it out.

And he said, “Well, don't be so stupid. Mosquitoes only fly up to the fourth floor!”

So it was only people from floor one to four, of course, that were being affected. The rest, mosquitoes can fly higher than that, but they can't be bothered going up very often because It's just too hard work. They can fly a long way, but not very high. So that's one of my old stories.

<If you have such stories, please reach out. I would love to interview you. Tx>

Nicely put Pravin. A lot of patience, perseverance and empathy while dealing with such people will be the need of the hour, I feel.
