Trouble with people is...
I felt the need to write a note on EU GDPR’s registrants right to personal data. It’s worth mentioning that I see no problem with an individuals right to see his or her personal data, let's say about his or her health. It’s very empowering. Even more so, if the data is in an actionable form.
My problem is with masses of people tinkering away with their personal data, especially if it involves sensitive data. It's foolish to think a greater mass of people would be able to maintain a secure grasp on their data. A group large enough will have people who make bad choices if given the opportunity. An opportunity will be presented no doubt.
As an example this comes into play with services, where people are empowered by letting them gather all their personal data from several services on to a single platform like an app. There is a significant risk in it, because companies/people/hackers will look to exploit this. They are already looking for your data to exploit it from the services that hold it now, let alone a single entity holding data from several services.
As a user, I'm curious to see what data different services have on me. I’m also a fairly lazy person (at home), so if an opprotunity should present it’s self to have my data processed to ease my day-to-day, there’s a very big chance I’d take it. And I work in the field. I actually think, for the most part, companies and apps do make my life easier and I’m not concerned my data would be handled misguidedly. But the more apps I’m using the bigger the risk is, that my data will fall in the wrong hands and suddenly I’m no longer in control. As if I was at the moment.
So using myself as an example, I protest to people having the right to their data to the extent that they would be able to then share it with whom ever they see fit. Don’t let me be mistreated. Save me from myself.
Let's discuss!
