The hot debate surrounding what impact AI is going to have on the role of Sales Development isn't going to go away.

Do I think there's an immediate risk to the SDR function? No.

Do I think SDRs and SDR organisations, should start educating themselves on how they build in the use of AI in their workflows, yes.

I certainly know from my own feelings that for a long time I felt as if I should be leaning into the use of ChatGPT, but I felt somewhat overwhelmed by how to go about bringing it into my day-to-day. And for SDR Leaders reading this, that sense of being overwhelmed and confused by how to use it most definitely has delayed me enabling reps I work with on it.

I want it to be helpful, not a hindrance for reps.

An Intro to ChatGPT

Let's start off by understanding what GPT stands for... 'Generative Pre-trained Transformer.

The best way to think of how to leverage OpenAI's tool is to use it as your personal assistant in your everyday activities as an SDR.

What does that likely include?

  1. Researching Accounts
  2. Understanding Personas & their Pain
  3. Optimising Outreach: Email & Phone
  4. Running quality Discovery Calls

Having ChatGPT do this work for you, enables you to focus on the 'human' elements of your sales role - building relationships for example!

What are the benefits of using ChatGPT?

I've already seen the use of ChatGPT enable SDRs to:

  • Save Time
  • Enable Themselves
  • Drive Results Faster

If you can do your tasks more efficiently and learn quicker, you're naturally going to challenge the art of what's possible in your own performance.

How to use ChatGPT as an SDR

Again, think of ChatGPT as your personal assistant. What's critical is the instruction or 'prompts' that you provide it.

To get you started, here's an example prompt for each of the areas I outlined above:

  • Account Research: "What is the recent news or updates about [Account Name] that could be relevant when I reach out via email to the [Account department]"
  • Understanding Personas: "What are the primary goals or objectives that [Persona/Prospect] would typically have in their role?"
  • Outreach Optimisation: "What would be a compelling subject line to capture the attention of a [Persona/Prospect] in the [Industry/Company Name]?"
