In today's sports landscape, the intersection between sustainability and fan engagement has never been more pronounced. As the CEO of ONE8Y, I am constantly analyzing the sentiments of sports fans worldwide, particularly as our sports business database, the ONE8Y DB, provides insights into these pressing topics. The latest data highlights a nuanced picture of how soccer fans perceive sustainability in the sport they love. Here are some of the key takeaways.
1. Support for sustainability with financial limitations
A significant majority of soccer fans show general support for sustainable practices, but personal financial constraints often make it challenging to fully embrace. 51% of respondents either "strongly agree" or "rather agree" with the statement, "I am in favor of a sustainable approach, but I simply cannot always afford to act in this way." This highlights a crucial point: while fans want to see positive environmental impact, affordability remains a barrier for many.
2. Sustainability as a source of frustration
There’s also a notable sentiment of frustration among fans towards sustainability discussions in soccer. 34% of respondents feel that the topic is moralizing, and 26% express annoyance, saying that they want to enjoy soccer without constant reminders of what they can improve. Additionally, 33% sense hypocrisy, perceiving certain sustainability efforts as "greenwashing." This insight underscores the importance of authenticity. Fans desire genuine actions over superficial gestures, and they are quick to discern sincerity from showmanship.
3. Complexity and the call for simplicity
17% of fans find the complexity of sustainability issues within soccer disruptive. For many, it’s not the message itself but the way it’s communicated that creates a barrier. This indicates that simplifying the approach to sustainability – making it more transparent and accessible – could increase acceptance and engagement from fans.
4. Should soccer be a platform for social issues?
Opinions are divided on whether soccer should address broader social issues, like environmental protection. About 50% of respondents believe that soccer should or might serve as a platform for social issues, while 27% are against it. This split reflects the ongoing debate about the role of sports as a vehicle for social responsibility versus pure entertainment.
What This Means for the Soccer Industry
For clubs, leagues, and organizations aiming to integrate sustainability, these insights offer valuable guidance. Fans are willing to embrace sustainable practices, but they seek an approach that feels sincere, clear, and financially considerate. The industry has an opportunity to foster a more sustainable future in a way that enhances, rather than detracts from, the enjoyment of the game.
Moving Forward with Purpose
These findings from our ONE8Y DB illustrate the fine line soccer organizations must tread to align with fan expectations. True sustainability in soccer means balancing the game’s core entertainment value with meaningful, realistic environmental initiatives. Fans want their voices heard, their concerns addressed, and above all, they want sustainability to feel as genuine as the passion they bring to every match.
