National Drive Electric Week Caps a Packed September

This week marks the end of another month but the start of National Drive Electric Week 2024, where EV enthusiasts across North America come together to answer questions from potential buyers and offer test drives of their vehicles. Take a look at the NDEW website for events in many areas of the United States and Canada.

We also enjoyed seeing several electrification and sustainability events throughout September, starting with FullyCharged.SHOW & Everything Electric's latest event in Canada, then moving on to Forth Roadmap in Michigan and MOVE: Mobility Re-imagined in Texas last week. There was also a full slate of awards and speakers in New York for #ClimateWeekNYC, with themes ranging from heavy transportation electrification to sustainable living.

Here's our best attempt at boiling all this activity down into our regular weekly update... wish us luck! (And if you find this info useful, remember to share it with a colleague and subscribe for future editions.)

🎯International Energy Agency (IEA) published a report detailing the implementation of the full COP28 energy pledge package targets and what this means in practice.

🚛 Expansion plans in the heavy-duty transportation sector, where Volvo Trucks added 70 vehicles to fleets across southern California this week. The trucks are funded in part by the EPA's SWITCH-ON initiative. The program contributed $21.5 million for the electric trucks, which will be used for regional drayage.

⚡Headline sponsor of Everything Electric Canada, BC Hydro, marked the completion of its Electric Highway in September.

💳 A study of 4,000 charging stations by Massachusetts Institute of Technology confirmed what many in the sector love to share: attracting EV owners brings with it new customers. Charging stations installed near local businesses typically increased card transactions by around 3% compared to nearby businesses with similar offerings but no EV charging.

🚨According to leading clean transport voices, utilities in California must move more aggressively to reduce the state's backlogged grid upgrades. Failure to do so, along with deploying grid-support technologies such as battery energy storage and energy orchestration systems, puts zero emission freight transportation targets in jeopardy.

🍁 Canada's Parkland Corporation will use a $210 million loan from the Canadian Infrastructure Bank to install up to 2,000 chargers at 400 of its properties across the country.

🚚 All-electric models from General Motors gained access to the Tesla Supercharger network last week, with a couple of commercial exceptions.

The initiative gives new owners a free home charger and covers significant portions of the installation costs so that customers quickly gain access to one of the core advantages of EV ownership.
