Harnessing Technology to Change the Trajectory of Health
What was a 130-year-old healthcare company doing at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest consumer technology conference? Johnson & Johnson is a science and technology company with a strong legacy of innovation, and we recognize the power of technology to fundamentally change how people are cared for around the world. Our mission is to transform health from an industry solely focused on caring for the sick to one also inspired by keeping people well. In everything we do—whether it’s through our medical devices, consumer products or pharmaceuticals—we believe that technology plays a crucial role in enabling people to be well, stay well and get well.
At Johnson & Johnson we are using technology to improve people's health in important ways. Here are some of the things we’re working on:
Using technology to change healthcare delivery. We’re using technology to completely reimagine surgery along every step of the process, from training surgeons using virtual and augmented reality to 3-D printing technology that delivers personalized implants and instruments. We’re also using digital tools to support and empower patients, such as the Health Partner digital platform, to help people prepare emotionally, physically and mentally for surgery, and get well as quickly as possible.
Powering medical breakthroughs. Technology has changed the process of drug discovery and clinical trials. Computational power, visual image processing, machine learning and AI have transformed our research & development process. Technology is leading us into an era of personalized medicine, and has been integral to the breakthroughs we've been able to make in the last ten years in areas like oncology, immunology, infectious disease and the microbiome.
Empowering people to take charge of their health. At Johnson & Johnson, we're leveraging our expertise in behavioral science to help people take care of themselves better. We’re doing exciting work to democratize dermatology and help consumers manage their skin health. We launched the Neutrogena Skin360™ at CES, which puts the same technology that’s used by dermatologists into the hands of consumers and is paired with the information they need to care for their skin—including when they should visit their dermatologist.
Solving unmet needs. Whether it’s through innovative new products or services, we’re using cutting-edge technology to meet the needs of consumers and patients. In our vision care business, we’re doing exciting work on a next generation contact lens—based on consumer insights—that will adapt to the environment to combat bothersome light and digital eye strain.
Technology has the potential to make an incredible difference in the innovations we bring to patients and consumers – and in the way we care for people in traditional healthcare settings and beyond.

6yThe biggest need for health technology lies with the elderly as they use resources the most. The problem is that they are least likely to invest in new technology. How do we square that circle?
