December 2023, although it seems a long time ago now, was a busy month for medical imaging vendors. As is the case every year, there was one main reason for this busyness: The annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Given the Chicago event’s pivotal role as a launchpad for new products and a forum for robust conversations about the future of medical imaging, many of Signify Premium Insights’ December Insights focused on the conference.

The Premium Insight assessing the modality trends prevalent at the show highlighted that many of the products on display saw vendors emphasise the usability of their systems. Given the growing shortage of trained personnel and the increasing volume of scans which need to be performed, this was an apt focus, with vendors keen to show providers how they could do more with fewer experienced staff, and improve the quality of life for those staff, helping to prevent burnout and injuries or strains from unergonomic systems.

RSNA also saw many vendors’ displays guided by changing clinical practice and providers requirements. With new guidelines leading vendors to promote products that specifically met these needs.

This was also true in medical imaging IT and AI. The post-show RSNA Premium Insight focusing on these topics covered several trends that have been evolving over recent years, including increased cloud adoption and enterprise imaging’s expansion beyond radiology.

There were, however, also some newer trends present at the show. One such topic of conversation was the increasing appreciation, from both vendors and providers alike, of the value of data and the opportunities it presented. This was particularly pertinent given AI and generative AI’s continued rise within medical imaging.

Generative AI was also very prevalent at the show. The Premium Insight focusing on generative AI’s presence at the show, highlighted how in many cases, the technology’s presence was through demonstrations and work in progress exhibits rather than finished, clinically useful solutions.

Those tools that were there often focused on essential elements of medical imaging, including back-end deployment, workflow automation, insight generation and facilitating and driving the ongoing data race.

More broadly, one of the most discussed uses was within reporting. This is partly because it is an application of the technology largely free from regulation. This is one of the factors making it accessible to a large number of vendors, however, this also means that it is a use case which risks becoming commodified.

Despite its prominence, topics away from RSNA were also the subject of Signify Premium Insights. Among them was GE HealthCare and Sectra’s announcement that the US would facilitate tighter integration of the Swedish vendor’s enterprise imaging diagnostic radiology tools with GE’s Advanced Visualisation solution. It is not the first time vendors have enabled such integrations, but the teamwork does raise some questions about the vendors’ strategies.

Another topic featured in a Premium Insight, was the memorandum of understanding put in place between Philips and 4DMedical, and the latter’s acquisition of lung imaging vendor Imbio. Both of these moves will help the respiratory solution vendor as it looks to expand its customer base on an international scale, and establish its offering in hospitals around the world.
